2 out of 5 eggsAwful mounting hardware! Beware!

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R 135mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler Red LED

Pros: Price was right and looked like a descent design.

Cons: Will look for other brands next time I'm shopping for a CPU cooler. Do yourself a favor and avoid this product unless you like installation nightmares. The mounting hardware included screws that were too short, had to end up bending the mounting brackets slightly in order to thread the bolts into the nuts. Looked at other reviews while installing this product and others seem to have the same issue. If you have a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming5 mobo and an Intel processor avoid this cooler.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend this product

2 out of 5 eggsSlightly disappointed

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R 135mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler Red LED

Pros: I have always used Zalman coolers on every PC build I have done in the last 20 years. They cool very good, and look great doing it!

Cons: This was the first time I received a damaged Zalman product. The left side cooling fins were bent over so bad that the fan was actually stuck against it, and was kept from turning.

Other Thoughts: Since I have never had any issues in the past, I will continue to buy Zalman products. I know that anything can happen every once in awhile, so I will continue to praise Zalman.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome product

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R 135mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler Red LED

Pros: Looks great in my case, cools well and is completely silent. There are a bunch of reviews about the installation being tough but I had no problem with it.

Cons: None at all, great product

5 out of 5 eggsCustomer Service Saves The Day..

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R 135mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler Red LED

Pros: Installing for an AMD socket board may be the worst I've experienced (the installation manual is even worst?) but with help from customer service and some parts, I'm up and running. Keeps a AMD FX-9590 Vishera 4.7GHz Socket AM3+ 220W 8-Core CPU running at about 31C in the Zalman H1 case.

Cons: As mentioned, the AMD installation is tough. The manual leaves a lot to be desired. Intel may be a dream though.

Other Thoughts: For cooling this is the bomb. The red led business of the fan is subtle. It's actually quite small for 220watt cooling. The Cooler Master V8 GTS (I love by the way) is a monster compared side by side with it. The 'be quiet! DARK ROCK TF' may be my favorite 220w cooler though.

1 out of 5 eggsCan't use it

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R 135mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler Red LED

Pros: None at this point

Cons: Make effort to install...will not fit AMD boards. My MSI A88x G45 Gamer board is to much for the cooler and/or the supplied hardware. There is a 10mm gap between the mounting screws and their nut. Far, far to big a gap. Zalman knows of this as I've seen countless comments about this issue.

Other Thoughts: Zalman's China manufacturing site need better 'QC' as their end products (too me in any case) and to the average customer I assume is bad right now. Four (4) email to them and zero response. These were for various problems and they promise to respond within 2 days...doesn't happen folks. Their H1 computer case is another 'case' in point. First one was returned for 'damage'. The second one in today...have to return it to. It's also damaged. Maybe a bad boat ride for its motherland but its about all I'll ever need from Zalman.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than stock

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R 135mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler Red LED

Pros: BBQ, I like bar-b-que, but this is more Big Beefy and Quiet.

I just purchased an 88 Watt i7 Devils Canyon 1150. The stock HSF solution was quite aggravating due to the fan noise. So I opted for something I knew was good.

You can use the in-line resistor mod, but in my experience its been silly and pointless by simply setting the fan in the bios to "silent". Another comment about the resistor later.

Cons: Install was also a bit of a chore. While the 1150 instructions are not explicitly listed, you follow them for the 1155 socket.

There was a point where I had to look at the example three four times, even after pulling all the parts out and laying them out for the process.

The included long-shaft ball allen wrench did not do so well on the screws. Worked great starting the mounting screws, but became worthless after four turns.

The resistor mod that is included is questionable. Its silly to lower the voltage if you have PWM controls available. While this is a flame-proof type resistor, it would be advisable from a safety standpoint to wrap it in heat shrink tubing to prevent a burn or melting nearby wires if it gets hot from fan stall or short.

At full turbo load, the fan ramps up to a noticeable point. Temperatures still hit 70c at 4.4GHz even with the provided paste. Due to the amount of effort required to dismantle the HSF, Im not going to put on a different material.

Other Thoughts: Aside from taking some time to install, the HSF is rather fragile. Those individuals that like to rip and jam parts in quickly will find that this HSF solution will infuriate them.

All components clear the HSF base easily, but I feel the lack of a shroud around the fan blades actually reduce the cooling ability.

In all, I think my CNPS9500 for my socket 775 did a better job at cooling. The CNPS5X I had is also quieter, but not quite as good at cooling.

2 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R 135mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler Red LED

Pros: Quiet, kept the cpu cool, looked nice.

Cons: The fan is held on by some pretty flimsy arms, which were bent a little bit when I received the heatsink. Ultimately this caused the fan to start wobbling and making a lot of noise. I tried to fix the issue myself, but could not. The fan and the way it's attached are proprietary, so there was no replacing just the wobbling fan.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing cooler

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R 135mm Long life bearing CPU Cooler Red LED

Pros: It's been keeping my proc cool 24/7 for the last 4 years. Whisper quite under full load.

Cons: It's big, make sure it fits your case. The fins are extremely sharp which makes installation kind of difficult.

Other Thoughts: I'm running this in a haf932. The entire system is under 10dB at full load.
