1 out of 5 eggsBeautiful anti-cooler! It's amazing(ly bad)!

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: Looks cool. Quiet.

Cons: The antithesis of a CPU cooler. Use this object to prevent the movement of heat from one place to another.

Installed on AMD A8-5600K. Turned on Prime95 and CPU Temps instantly ramped to 90C!!! Sits Idle at 45-65C. Heat pipes are cool to the touch. It's unbelievable how bad this thing is... It's practically an anti-cooler. It's laughable.

I used quality Thermal paste. A little, a lot... it doesn't matter. The cooler will not dissipate thermal energy. It's quite literally cool to the touch while the CPU is up against it's 90C thermal safety gating. I cannot comprehend how this is possible.

Other Thoughts: It's an idiotic design. They had the bright idea of mashing the copper cooling tubes directly to the surface of the CPU. The surface of the copper tubes is ground with... 10 Grit or worse sand paper to the consistency of... bare rocks or twisted metal. It's a miracle if any surface area is in contact between the CPU and the cooler. No amount of polishing of lapping will make a smooth surface. Some gouges in the copper surface are are 0.5mm deep.

...if anything, this manufacturing process probably allowed the refrigerant gas in the copper tubes to escape.

2 out of 5 eggsIt works, but it's not great

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: Fits in a 4u rackmount case(pretty rare for 120mm box coolers)

Cons: Sharp edges (I have cut myself installing these coolers twice).
Poor RAM clearance for high profile RAM.
Terrible mounting system. I say this not just because it's a pain to install, but also because the install method makes it hard for the thermal paste to spread correctly. I've had this cooler run crazy high temps(100c+) because of this issue. Reapplying thermal paste fixed the high temp issue, but required dealing with the poor mounting system again.

Other Thoughts: I've had two of these installed in 4U rackmount cases for about a year. Finally replaced them with Cryorig H7 coolers and now I'm MUCH happier.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product. Just make sure you have a case that is 180mm or larger height or the case cannot enclose this heatsink!

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: + Cools Intel Core2-Quad Q9650 wonderfully
+ Design allows 2 fans to be installed if needed
+ Worked out-of-box on Dell Vostro 220 and made it a viable gaming PC before upgrading to new case + mobo

Cons: - Tall Heatsink and requires a larger computer case. Assuming that you have a smaller, compact case like what's used on the Dell Vostro 2200, you won't be able to close the case at all and must keep computer open.

Other Thoughts: + Recommended for anyone planning to use a powerful CPU, especially in systems still using older Core2Duo/Core2Quad CPU's like me.
+ Apply thermal grease properly.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't even come with the right hardware

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: None

Cons: The nuts and bolts that come with the cooler don't actually fit together, making it impossible to install.

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your time and money.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat cooler!

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: Dropped my CPU temp. 10 degrees!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Almost didn't fit inside my case. But that's more my problem than anything. A great cooler keeps not only my CPU temp lower but also just inside the case cooler.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor quality control

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: Looks like it would work well if I ever got the right hardware.

Cons: Unit came missing a nut for the motherboard backplate. Called tech support. They were going to send the part "Priority" shipping. It arrived over a week later with the wrong hardware in the bag. Contacted NewEgg for an RMA. Never buying from Zalman again.

Other Thoughts: Zalman tech support didn't seem very professional and the whole idea of tech support to them appears very barebones.

2 out of 5 eggsFan died after two months.

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: Reasonably cheap, quieter than the stock cooler while it lasted, cooled better than the stock cooler. Easy to replace the fan with the included clips.

Cons: The fan began making faint noise after about a month, then ratcheted it up to a steady and annoying drone over the course of the next month. Replaced the fan with a 10-year-old Sunbeam fan, instant improvement. For a product whose main draw is the quietness of its fan, this was very disappointing.

Other Thoughts: Not a terrible cooler, but have a backup fan ready to go, or go with another brand with better fan reliability.

2 out of 5 eggsOkay Product/ Terrible Company

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: Good Heat Sink
Cheap

Cons: Noisy Fan
Dishonest Company

Other Thoughts: The Unit is large and the included thermal grease was cheap, I used Arctic Silver instead, Fan is noisy, and I put a second 120mm on there so it did drop my temps by 10 Celsius, I was very disappointed with the company denying my rebate. They have lost a customer for life due to their shady business practices, hope they enjoy the $10 they held on to so tightly.

2 out of 5 eggsLook OK, bad performance

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: Looks nice
Great airflow
Cheap

Cons: Heatpipes dont contact CPU, There is about a 2mm gap between the pipe and the CPU, I was thermal throttling an FX 6300 running TeamFortress 2, Not demanding by any stretch of the imagination.

Other Thoughts: Would have been great. guess i got a bad one :(
