1 out of 5 eggsAwful Decision

Pros: Looks great.
If installed properly, will most likely keep CPU cooled.

Cons: Although I followed the provided instructions I couldn't install this cooler into my lga 1150 socket motherboard - the provided screws were not long enough to reach the provided nuts, and attempting to screw the cooler into the board (very slowly, less than a mm at a time at alternating corners) caused the motherboard to bend.

Other Thoughts: Maybe AMD users will have better experiences.
Maybe some Intel users will have better experiences.
Maybe I'm just not the brightest person on the planet.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsDefective heat pipe

Pros: The price is $9.99 after $20 mail in rebate when I bought it few days ago. Huge heatsink with 6 heat pipes at $10 is very hard to find.

Cons: When I received the package, it was not damage or anything. Upon opening the box and taking out the heatsink, I noticed the heat pipes at the bottom does not fully touch with the base. There are 2 out of 6 heat pipe have a large gap in between where they don't make full contact with the base copper. At the end, newegg was kind enough to allow me return for a refund.

3 out of 5 eggsWorth it for $10.00

Pros: Price: Paid $10 after coupon and rebate

Performance: Yes, it does work better than stock cooler by decreasing temperature by 5-7C while idle. I haven't had a chance to put it under stress or overclock my cpu yet. I didn't really notice increase or decrease in noise level which is a good thing, I guess.

Cons: Installation: I usually don't write product reviews and only reason I'm writing this review is because I feel obligated to warn others about how hard it is to install this cooler even on ATX tower. I wouldn't make my worst enemy go through the installation process. If you are thinking about buying this and installing it without taking out motherboard, please turn away and go with 212 EVO. It is huge and instructions are useless.

Other Thoughts: For $10, I can't really complain about performance. You get what you pay for. I can't give more than 3 stars because how hard the installation process was.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Heatsink, Loud Fan

Pros: Cools better than the CM V8 (original version) it replaces.
Rebate was approved.

Cons: The fan makes a noticeable whirring noise as it speeds up and slows down. I replaced it with something quieter (funky install, effective though).

Other Thoughts: Cooling fins cover the first two memory slots (MSI Z97-G55 SLI), I bent several down and out of the way to gain clearance. I had to remove/replace a VRM heatsink during install. I found a magnetic screwdriver helpful while positioning the bolts. A regular box wrench (can't remember the size) works better than what they supply.

2 out of 5 eggsNot for me

Pros: Looks like it will really cool.

Cons: Big. Too big for my case. Essentially impossible to install.

Other Thoughts: After about 1/2 hour of puttering with this, I remembered vowing to never buy another Zalman cooler. I took it out of the box and gazed at the myriad of little parts that came with it. At least now I know where Rube Goldberg is working now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, but BIG!

Pros: Cheap price, It had a 20$ off promo from email deals and 20$ rebate! Keeps meh CPU cool!

Cons: It's big as hell! I just guesstimated the measurements to see if It would fit, unfortunately it is like 4 mm off, but I left it on and had the top part of the side panel off a lil.

Other Thoughts: I knew that it may not fit in my case, so I'm still giving 5 stars.

5 out of 5 eggsHuge but cool

Pros: This is a well built cooler with a very quite fan. I installed this on an i5 2500K with and MSI P67-G43 motherboard with all RAM slots filled with G. Skill Ripjaw X modules with the tall spreaders and even though the fins hang over the first two slots they clear the RAM coolers by a few millimeters. It's a tight fit but it works. I have a Cooler Master HAF 912 case and it fits just fine with still bit a room for excellent air flow.

Cons: Installation is fairly simple, but getting the screws to thread into the backplate bolts is a bit of a hassle. The included spanner tool works just fine but requires more effort and time than using an ordinary screw driver, but unfortunately due to the size of the cooler it is required to use the included spanner tool. This will definitely require you to remove the motherboard from your case for installation. Any motherboard headers near or under the cooler will require special tactics to plug, such as case fan headers and the CPU power port.

Other Thoughts: I knew the installation would be tricky going into it, so I wasn't caught off guard at all. If you are patient and willing to take the time to install this cooler then I would highly recommend it. Smaller coolers such as the Cooler Master Hyper 212 are definitely easier to install. With a mail in rebate this is an great deal for $29.99 after MIR, but at full price I might have looked elsewhere.

5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: This seems to be a great cooler. It's built well and is reasonably priced.

Cons: none that I see.

Other Thoughts: It will not fit in a corsair air 240 case. (no fault of the cooler)

2 out of 5 eggsGreat price, poor design.

Pros: Six copper heatpipes.

Polished Copper base.

Aluminum cooling fins are about as large as could reasonably fit inside a mid tower case. Fins are raised just high enough so as not to block low profile memory with a few mm clearance.

The cooler is designed for a lot of different chipsets for both AMD and Intel. Instructions for 1155 work for installing on 1150 boards.

Cooler arrived undamaged, no bent fins or visible quality control issues.

Cons: The copper base was slightly tarnished when it arrived. Zalman should have installed a sticker on the base to prevent contact with air until just before installing the cooler.

Installation is hard. For my motherboard, the MSI Gaming 5, I could not install one of the retaining screws without removing one of the factory installed power distribution heatsinks. The instructions in the manual appear to be written by someone who is not a native English speaker. The diagrams are small and not sufficiently clear.

Mail in rebate was declined despite including all documentation, so this cooler cost me $20 more than I expected.

The provided fan is 135mm and has no bracket! When the fan is running at full speed, you can feel the air escaping through the open ridge and not through the aluminum fins. This is a poor design choice.

After installation, CPU temperatures still hit as high as 99C and throttled when running Prime95. Not sure if this is any better than the stock Intel cooler.
