3 out of 5 eggsChallenging installation

Pros: Very nice appearance, good price (especially if rebate arrives), nice build quality (with noted exceptions)

Cons: Very challenging installation, could use design improvements.

Other Thoughts: Installing the unit brought ambiguity in the manual to light. The manual doesn't describe the orientation in a clear way, you have to go by the slightly rounder and slightly squarer edges of the copper fins. A simple note on the diagram indicating which end the fan is at would take away the guess work. That or an airflow indication arrow on the fan housing itself.

The biggest issue I experienced with the metal nuts in the black plastic ring. They are installed with a compression fit. Inserting the short, golden screw somehow pushed the nut down and the screw threads could never engage to tighten the Intel clip. I ended up having to use the other two screw holes, which were harder to reach with the screwdriver to install the clip perpendicular to the air flow.

It was that, or removing the plastic ring from the motherboard completely to fix the isue with the nut. I chose not to do that because the thermal grease had formed a good bond between the cooler and the CPU.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great looking fan, matched my blue theme. Took idling and stressed temps down by 10C across the board, so does a decent job. Runs very quiet, even at top speeds.

Cons: Fins are a little sharp but be careful and you'll be fine.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty

Pros: Keeps my i5 4690K below 45c no matter what game i'm playing. I haven't overclocked yet but. I used Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste so i'm sure thats helping too.
Temp Idles around 33c just browsing the internet or whatever.
Install was easy and the blue LED matches the other lighting in my case
So quiet I can't even tell its on, sometimes I have to look thru the vent to see if its running!

Cons: The instruction book was a bit confusing, theres no words just diagrams, but i figired it out.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat fan!

Pros: -adjustable speed
-relatively quiet
-great cooling

Cons: -installation and cleaning can be troublesome
-very tight fit

Other Thoughts: I bought this over a year ago for a new rig I was building. Installation was a bit troublesome trying to get the brackets in and out (I had to switch out for the AMD bracket). It's a very tight fit in my case as well, but man does it perform! I've never had any problems in a year with this thing, and just took it out for the first time tonight to replace the thermal compound. Compound is still viscous and obviously not too worn. Still took it out and cleaned everything out. Be sure to wear some kind of protective gloves or something this thing is like a thousand razors that will cut you without you even noticing till later when you go to put some hand sanitizer on your hand and it's burning like a thousand suns. In my opinion it's not enough to take an egg off for a mild inconvenience once or twice a year with how good this thing does at keeping my 8-core AMD cool and running smooth. Buy it if you want something that's not over-the-top liquid cooling but will do a great job that you don't mind spending a little time on once or twice a year to clean it. Don't buy if you want something you can simply plug and play.

5 out of 5 eggsJust...wow

Pros: Where do I even start? First let me say, if you're going to stick with air cooling instead of liquid, then Zalman is the best company to buy from!

+It has a blue light...pretty...

++This thing keeps my AMD FX 4.0GHZ 8-core processor at 8-15 degrees C at idle. never letting it go above 35C even when all 8 cores are being used!

+++You can make it so the fan will direct air in any of 4 directions, so I have it expelling air towards the back fan of my case. My computer used to crank out really hot air with old CPU fans, Stock and others. but now the air is just slightly warm at worst. I am sure it also gets the air flowing over the RAM as well, decreasing their heat. This thing solved so many ventilation and heating problems for more than the CPU!

+++With my old Freezer 7 Pro I could only fit 3 sticks of RAM in the computer, but with this thing I can fit all 4!!!

There is no question this thing is amazing! Only thing that remains to be seen is how long it lasts.

Cons: It was harder to install than other AMD fans. As in it took an entire minute to install rather than just 20 seconds.

You have to apply and spread of the thermal grease on to the heat sink yourself, which is a minor inconvenience.

It is a little loud, wish I could give you a better idea of its noise level but I can't. It's not as loud as the stock fan was under full load though.

The prongs around the fan fell like they're a little easy to bend, handle with care.

Other Thoughts: I had an old 8800GT video card 7 years ago, and this thing came with specialized cooling from Zalman, and it was incredible too. Reason why I'm saying this is because Zalman is THAT good! Unless your going with liquid cooling, buy this thing or a version with a bigger fan!

1 out of 5 eggsFrustrating Installation

Pros: None; unable to instal

Cons: I wish I could've tested this product's purported performance, but unfortunately the low quality materials of the Clip Support and Clip Fixing Bolts made it impossible to instal.

The Clip Fixing Bolts (Screws) are slightly too short to thread with the nuts in the Clip Support (a plastic piece that attaches to the motherboard, and, theoretically, the CPU cooler itself). After hours of trying to see if I'd made a mistake, it became clear that the screws were simply never meant to be able to reach through the width of the Intel Clip, and into the Support Clip.

I decided to return this product and buy from a different manufacturer in the future. There are many good options to choose from.

Other Thoughts: I find it extremely frustrating that the installation was ruined simply because the screws were mere millimeters too short. Clearly this isn't an issue for everyone, but it seems like Zalman is pinching pennies with some of the critical components. Is it too much to ask for just a hair more length to the screws? Is it really saving that much on manufacturing costs? In addition, the Clip Support did not seem fit to securely hold the nuts from stripping, making it difficult for future removal. Buy at your own risk.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear valued customer,

We sincerely apologize for the issue. Please contact our customer service e-mail support.usa@zalmanusa.com or via toll free number 1-888-925-6266 for further assistance.

Thank you.

Best regards,

5 out of 5 eggsFan Blades Pull Air Through - Not Push Out

Pros: Great fan. Keeps things significantly cooler (varying results for all would be normal).

Make sure you seat the fan properly. Of the two ends, the end with the fan blades is pulling the air into it to blow out the back end of the fan. You want this fan to compliment your build and airflow. It is generally a better idea to have this fan blowing air in the direction where your other fans are trying to blow air out of your computer case.

So it's good to have the end with no fan blades (i.e. the back) pointing towards a rear\top computer case fan...that way this CPU cooler fan will suck air in (from the end with the fan blades) and blow it out to the fan attached to your case, which is subsequently blowing the air out of your PC case.

It seems obvious and even expected. But I certainly understand the excitement of building a PC. And forcing yourself to keep these things in mind will keep your PC cooler and healthier in the long run.

Cons: Be careful with those very thin blades surrounding the fan. It's part of the heat dissipation, but they feel pretty flimsy. I didn't test how much pressure it would take to bend them. But it didn't feel like it would take much.

Other Thoughts: The hard plastic mount that attaches to the motherboard ALMOST came right down on top of a transistor or two. Be careful.

3 out of 5 eggsGood buy but not great

Pros: Quiet stays cool 32-42 C at around 600-1000 rpm on a intel G3258 Haswell even at 78 deg F room temp.I plugged the fan directly in mobo cpu header although its is only 3 pin fan expert was able to control it well.

Cons: Fan I dislike the fact that you cant buy a replacement fan and that the fan isn't 4 pin pwm .

Other Thoughts: If your thinking of overclocking I would look at other coolers. This will work but there are coolers for a little more cash that would do a better job. I would recommend this over the stock cooler any day.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing - except for like, two things...

Pros: Offers surprising amount of cooling for a smaller spec fan. Very quiet on lowest setting (1500rpm) if you are using the fan controller. LED is a nice touch. Low profile makes it great for smaller towers. Installation was easier than expected

Cons: Crazy sharp blades around the fan, no PWM (only external fan controller), fairly loud on max setting (2500rpm), and once it's inside your computer it makes it VERY hard to work on things, as the sharp fan blades take up a lot of real estate, depending on your tower.

Other Thoughts: I almost decided to go with my stock cooler on the fx8320, but i ended up dropping it with the thermal paste-side down, so i was forced then to use my Zalman cooler, and thank goodness i did. I was expecting a very messy install but it actually went better than expected. Didn't cut myself (until it was in there and i started messing around with my ram sticks), the controller setup was easy, and I didnt have any issue with it sliding around once it was in there. With this running my fx8320 and ASUS gtx960, I have yet to see my rig get above 60c w/o overclock. Sometimes i do forget to turn the controller all the way up before gaming (another reason why you will hate using the fan controller) and it can get hotter than usual. Besides the things I've listed, I can wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone looking for a decent cooler, that can't break the bank for water cooling. First time builders - however - may want to pass on this for something a little easier to install and maintain.
