5 out of 5 eggsBest ever

Pros: I have been dealing with New Egg for years, but due to hard times I have not purchased anything in some time. It is nice to see that over the years there customer service is still the best there is. I needed the part asap, and they upgraded the shipping for me at no cost. They are the best.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Cooling

Pros: Not much choice out there for the old 478 units any longer, but this seemed to be the best value for the money overall. Mount was very simple, well designed and solid. Quality fan used, is a bit on the loud side, but how much do you want to spend on a PC of this age. My customer was happy, all that matters.

Cons: A little loud, but I have heard much much worse.

3 out of 5 eggsReplaces Stock, Loud

Pros: It does take a lot of pressure to get the clips to latch (as I was expecting after reading the other reviews), but I consider this to be a positive feature. I put a thick rubber pad under my board to protect it from the risk of cracking, but the device certainly clips on with a nice positive feel, so you're confident of good contact with the cpu.

The fan moves huge volumes of air.

Cons: It's very loud. I think the primary effectiveness of the unit is likely due to the high volume fan.

Other Thoughts: I didn't get any major improvement - after multiple installs to be sure of my thermal compound (mx-2) application - from the stock Intel heatsink. I was able to improve by 2 to 3 degrees compared to stock. I'm cooling a 3.0 Prescott (not overclocked). I can't call this a con, because it's still a slight improvement, but from my experience, I really can only recommend this as a stock replacement, not an upgrade. I figure it rates three eggs.

2 out of 5 eggsNOT Plug and Play

Pros: High volume fan, heavy multi-directional heatsink, with a copper core.
It's nearly a duplicate of my oem Intel cooler (which had a very long life and worked perfectly on a P4 3.4), and it has a larger, replaceable fan.
So even though I have no proof (haven't tried) I'm certain it will at least perform as well and last as long as 80mm fans are around.

Cons: The mounting bracket looks good, but is difficult to attach, in fact, the pressure required to clip this thing is way beyond a mounted motherboards' tolerance (your mileage may vary)
I stopped when the board started to flex.
I tried to contact Evercool, and as far as I can tell, they ship direct to their retailers (no US phone number, no US address, only e-mail).
The thing is, this could be a great cooler at twice the price I paid, but it's not, only because of the mounting.
And I doubt if most folks are willing to take the steps required for a proper mount.
Rest assured the probability of a damaged motherboard is almost certain, because the springs bottom out a little before the latches can engage (my fix is below).

Other Thoughts: This evercool replacement heatsink casting is IDENTICAL to my P4 oem sink, with the exception of a bit of milling to accept the oem mounting clip.
The mounting clip is a " sqeeze the side tabs, press down over the heatsink and release " affair.
So i tried, but i was flexing the motherboard.
I took board out and placed it on a solid surface topped with 1/4 in. foam (board packing) topped with an anti-static envelope. It took a LOT of pressure and a bit of twisting to line up and latch.
Then it all went wrong, since this was a dry run i tried to remove it for pasting, and the tiny nibs that lock it in broke off.
The fix is to machine of the top of the sink (where the spring bars touch) about 3/16 (i used a rotary power tool), and secure with tie wraps (the 4 legs).
As far as i can tell my bottom bracket is intel spec and is attached by screws (don't trust plastic rivits).
This is probably a blowout from Evercool, considering the price, and probability of damage / personal injury.

5 out of 5 eggsFits the bill for 478 intel socket

Pros: Have an older pc with a 2.4Ghz P4 socket 478. It started blue-screening, accompanied by high-low Award bios beeps (either a damaged or overheated cpu). Installed this with a dab of MX-2. It keeps the cpu between 24-30c during normal use, about 5 degrees lower than the old stock cooler. Nice, simple, clever, effective method for attaching the cooler.

Cons: Removing the old stock cooler was more challenging than installing this.

Other Thoughts: Used a clean cloth to get the old goo off the cpu, and that worked fine - no alchohol (or WD-40) needed.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very easy mounting setup, keeps the CPU really cool, alot cooler than my previous cooler unit did!!!

Cons: None at this point.

Other Thoughts: I purchased a metal mounting bracket for my motherboard, because I didn't feel that the plastic one that came on the motherboard would hold up to this products mounting setup.

5 out of 5 eggsPay No Attention to Noobs

Pros: This is a great HSF for your motherboard if your motherboard has the INTEL SPEC bracket that mounts their factory HSFs.

Pay no attention to noobs like "ray57913" who reviewed this product based on incompatability with a DELL.

It's your own fault if you don't know that your Dell Machine uses proprietary cooling in the first place.

The mounting bracket is an Intel Specification Part for the Socket 478. Lack of that bracket does not constitute a problem with your HSF, but your Motherboard Manufacturer's ability to follow specifications when advertising the Motherboard as "Socket 478".

This is a common theme in DELL anyway. Even their CPU fans use proprietary connectors to receive power & modulation from the motherboard.

Cons: 4000rpm 80mm fans are LOUD?

Other Thoughts: When you notice every Motherboard you could have ever bought retail comes with a bracket your DELL doesn't have... who do you think is missing something? The new HSF, or the DELL?

2 out of 5 eggsBracket not included

Pros: none for me. I could not use it

Cons: Does not come with a bracket to hold it to the motherboard. I am/was trying to use it on a Dell Motherboard I transplanted into a larger case so I could install more drives. Problem is that the new case does not have holes for the stock bracket to screw into. I am reluctant to drill holes in the case and would rather get a fan that will work.

Other Thoughts: Newegg should post if it has mounting brackets or not

4 out of 5 eggsGood sink, easy install, very loud

Pros: The retention clip is a great design and makes it a breeze to install. It cools wonderfully. Great performance for the price.

Cons: The stock fan is incredibly loud - albeit moving a ton of air, it's still incredibly loud.
