Design Flaw
- Pros: It works until it clogs with dust and cannot cool properly.
- Cons: I have a customer who had this fan in their ATX tower system. They had repeated issues with the computer shutting down due to overheating. The first time I was called out, I saw a thick build up of dust on the heatsink. I cleaned it and the problem went away. This happened a second and a third time over the course of a year or so.
I have built hundreds of systems for customers and have NEVER had a single issue with overheating due to excessive accumulation of dust on the heatsink.
After their board died, I gave them the option of upgrading the CPU, but they chose not to. This issue occurred on two completely different motherboards. The third time around, I replaced it with a stock Intel HSF and they haven't had a problem since.
I'm not an engineer, but the problem seems to be the depth of the fan ring that clips to the heatsink. While the Intel one is 4mm, the Masscool one is 17mm. This traps and concentrates dust on the heatsink, preventing it from cooling properly.
- Other Thoughts: This thing has been a huge pain in the neck. I wouldn't recommend it unless you like taking things apart and cleaning them on a regular basis (I don't!).
Better than stock HSF
- Pros: Smaller than the stock P4 HSF that was in my wife's machine, brought the temps down by 10°. Idle temp was 57° and now it's in the low 40°'s. Put this in the wifes P4 3GHz Gateway system.
- Cons: Intel's push pin design.
- Other Thoughts: Works great, thinking I should have considered a HSF with a back plate since I had to take the SysBoard out anyway. But this works as expected.
Better than I thought
- Pros: Bought one to see if it was worth buying more. Definitely considering after putting into a customer computer. Replaced stock cooler for E2200, which idled in the 60s and gave up on load. This Cooler brought it down to low 30s idle and peaked at 61 max load (avg. about 58 load).
Not loud
All temps in Celsius
- Cons: Hearing a dull hum out of the case, but that could be the exhaust fan. Never really liked the push-pins, but who does?
- Other Thoughts: for the price, it's definitely a good replacement for a lower end 775 CPU. no additional hardware to install (big plus, big time saver). Definitely better setups out there, but if you want simple and affordable, you can't go wrong with this.
