S-FLEX Fan Series is equipped with Sony S-FDB Bearing which promises lowest noise level at highest quality and lifetime (150,000 hours).

  • newegg Genuine S-FDB Bearing for Ultra-Low Noise and Long Lifespan The Scythe S-Flex SFF80D is equipped with genuine S-FDB (SONY Fluid Dynamic Bearing) made by SONY corporation. S-FDB technology drastically eliminates the friction between the bearing and the shaft, which makes this fan nearly inaudible to human ears. Additional suction magnet optimizes the magnetic force balance within the rotor to achieve absolute silence. To even further achieve the absolute silence, the fan is equipped with the Linear drive IC for reducing electromagnetic noise. "S-FDB" structure also allows the fan to last up to outstanding 150,000 hours.
  • newegg Anti-Shock Ability Conventional ball bearing carries a point contacting structure for rotation. This gives a point supporting situations and dropping impact which can damage the ball bearing surface leading to irregular noise. The S-FDB carries a surface contact mechanism for improved anti-shock structure, which is 5 times stronger than the conventional ball bearing.

5 out of 5 eggsGood bang for the buck

Pros: Moves a lot of air (for an 80mm). Surprisingly little noise.

Cons: None thus far.

Other Thoughts: I was presently surprised how quiet this fan is since it moves a respectable amount of air. Would definitely buy again.

1 out of 5 eggsUgly Noise

Pros: It blows.

Cons: It's noisy when it blows.
The noise has an unusual grating quality that is very annoying, even when it is throttled down to 50% with undervoltage.

Other Thoughts: I'm a Scythe Fanboi- my case has five other Scythes, including a Samurai ZZ CPU cooler, two 120mm SFlex, and two 80mmSFlex C's. I can't tolerate this 80mm D model.
But every parts bin needs a few failed fan experiments.

Pros: Monster airflow, Monster noise to go with it.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If im building lets say a HTPC I would just get the low noise model.

5 out of 5 eggsA great undervolter!

Pros: This is a great little fan and undervolts very well. It can start as low as 4 volts, and run at 3 volts. This is unusual, most fans need 7-8 volts to start.

Cons: Vibrates more than most fans. This will create a lot of mechanical noise if the fan is not mounted with some sort of isolation grommets or washers. If mounted carefully, there is no mechanical noise, only air noise. At 40 cfm for a 80mm fan, there will be quite a bit of air noise, but there's really no way around that.

Other Thoughts: The ability to start and run at low voltages makes this fan very versatile. If run on a variable-speed fan controller (built into most motherboards today), the fan will be able to run slowly (no noise) when you system is cool. If things heat up, this fan can move 40cfm which is a good amount of air for a 80mm fan. A lower speed fan would not be able to move 40cfm at full voltage, so it would not cool as well as this fan. A higher speed fan may not start at such low voltages, so it would not be as quiet when the system is cool.

Pros: *

Cons: So noisy it will run you out of the room. Metal case amplifies the noise.

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect PSU

Pros: I used this as a replacement fan in a PSU powering an old Dell that I keep running 24/7 as a Linux based server. It fit fine and gets the job done.

Cons: It was slightly noisey at 12V. Blade pass noise was amplified by the mesh as the PSU air outlet and created a high pitch tonal noise that was irritating. Changing the molex pin-out to achieve 7V quieted it right down and I am happy. Still plenty of performance for my need.

Other Thoughts: A bit of trouble with Newegg customer service regarding getting my order shipped out. This is the second problem in less than a year and I am long, long time customer. I hope this is not the begining of a trend...

2 out of 5 eggsLOUD!!!

Pros: To loud to keep in system.

Cons: Move some air. 150 000 Hours till it fail.

Other Thoughts: I cant use it - took it out. It's only thing I hear in my system after installation, not Video or stock Intel cooler - annoying noise of this fun. And it not really lower my system temp. I use 12' front intake at 1600 rpm - same S-Flex and it dissent for amount of air it push in. This one at exhaust - at back of the case - useless waste of noise pollution.

5 out of 5 eggsScythe S-Flex SFF80D Case Fan

Pros: Moves air as stated, very low noise with no vib's. One of the best 80mm fans we have use to date.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: Using on the bottom of our case as intake to help cool the P/S and the SLI bottom 280 GTX and one at the top of case as an exhaust. Lowered bottom 280 GTX 2 deg C. Great Fan but so are all the Scythe Fans.
