Rosewill offers "the best choice in value" with its range of CPU coolers that offer high end features and performance at low end prices. There's still some life left in that AMD Athlon XP chip - and plenty of heat too. Rosewill has a long-lasting, affordable cooling solution that will prevent damaging heat build up while operating quieter than the stock fan.

The RCX-Z100 features a 92 RPM fan which moves an impressive 44 CFM of cooling air. Even at 2200 RPM, the fan only generates 22.5 dBA of noise. It has an expected lifespan of over 45000 hours – equal to over five years of reliable service. Its pure aluminum heatsink has a large dimension copper base to efficiently draw heat away from the CPU.

A 3 point fixed clip lets you install the cooler onto motherboards with an AMD Athlon XP 3400+ CPU using the 462 pin Socket A mount.

  • newegg Exceptional Cooling Performance The extra-large copper base and high-density aluminum fins optimize heat dissipation. Plus a 92mm, 2200RPM ball bearing fan delivers an air flow of up to 44 CFM for exceptional cooling performance.
  • newegg Adjustable Fan Speed With a 3-pin connector, the Rosewill RCX-Z100 supports fan speed monitoring so you can fine tune the fan speeds for the optimum balance between cooling performance and noise level.

1 out of 5 eggspoor manufacturing

Pros: -$
- good fan for the price

Cons: very poor bond between the copper base and aluminum.
you can see it, plus high temps

Other Thoughts: the price is cheap but go elsewhere or used.
too bad, good idea.

5 out of 5 eggsFits well and comes with a nice, decently quite fan.

Pros: Needed a shorter cooler than currently installed to fit in the case of an old system I'm setting up as an appliance,

Nicely made and even though it has a slighty larger footprint than most athlon basic heatsinks, it isn't huge. And still cleared the taller than usual corsair xms ram that on of them was positioned directly under the side overhang/fan mounts of the heatsink.

Can also use 80mm fans directly.

As for the TIM performace I did not test it as everything I assemble I always replace the thermal material with either Arctic MX4 or Arctic Silver 5.

Cons: none really

Other Thoughts: Most stock style athlon coolers use 60mm fans.

This unit states it uses a 92mm fan, which it does, but look closely at the pictures, the screw holes are at a 80mm pattern and the fan blades protrude beyond them making it a 92mm fan.

So, you can replace this fan with a standard 80mm of your liking, or you can even downsize more if needed to 60mm fan as it will fit down in the lower middle fin section of the cooler.

Please understand that you cannot bolt a standard frame 92mm fan onto this cooler.

4 out of 5 eggsSilent but design flaws

Pros: I've noticed on high load with the stock aluminum heatsink i own (6000RPM,60MM fan) produced the same results as this fan.

Quiet
High CFM
High RPM
92MM

Cons: Installed many heatsinks in my day but this by far was the hardest... Used a flathead screwdriver like every other time and the heatsink's clamp flew right off. Thank heavens, I had a pair of needle nose pliers.

Other Thoughts: You may want to spread the thermal grease that is included with this heatsink, spread it out real thin or just buy some Masscool Fanner 420. I will conduct some more tests but I think I am correct.

5 out of 5 eggsEffective cooling for Low Price

Pros: Cools better than the old stock cooler on an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ cpu.

Also it's slightly quieter than the stock cooler.

Cons: none at the price.

Other Thoughts: The first gaming PC i ever built has an Athlon 3000+ cpu, and a sentimental attachment makes it hard to trash the old machine. So i ordered this Rosewill cooler and did the usual fiddly lever-the-retaining-clips-wth-a-screwdriver trick to install it (after cleaning off the old thermal paste of course). The result is cooler running, and the old PC lives on to serve as an occasional backup machine.

5 out of 5 eggsGood fan

Pros: It's big and quiet and keeps even Bartons cool. My 2800+ socket A Barton ran at 50 idle with the stock cooler and this makes it run around 39 idle (also using ArcticSilver5).

Cons: You really need to remove the fan to get it on.

Other Thoughts: if you are careful, removing the fan shouldn't be a problem. The people that are complaining must have not have worked on to many socket a systems. All socket a fans are a pain to get on. All socket a fans that attach to the heatsink do it in this manner. This is nothing new. Be careful and you will be fine. Unless your screws are stripped out from the factory, in which case, yeah, RMA it.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Quiet, cools, pretty much works.

Cons: Low quality. I've had 2 of these. One came broken. The other came warped. The fan enclosure touches the blades. It bens back into shape but sometimes returns to the non-circular form.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: Bought this to replace the stock cooler on my Sempron 3000+. Socket A is getting pretty old, so I'm impressed that Newegg still stocks this part.

This cooler lowered my temps a few degrees and is fairly quiet, even at full blast (large fan + low RPM helps). Contrary to other reviews, my Compaq-branded Asus motherboard seems to be able to read the RPMs and adjust the voltage dynamically, though I've disabled this function for maximum cooling performance.

Cons: Installation was a little tricky. I recommend removing the fan from the heatsink, removing the pre-applied thermal paste, and doing a few dry runs before applying Arctic Silver and installing it "for real." In my case, the metal clamp was way over-bent and had to be adjusted with pliers before it would fit.

When re-attaching the fan, be careful not to over-tighten the screws. This seems to be a weak point in the cooler's design, as the fan screws directly into the aluminum fins of the heatsink. If you screw the fan down too tightly, the plastic housing will warp slightly, causing it to make contact with the fan blades and produce an alarming noise. Loosening the screws slightly solved this for me.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is a decent cooler, although it didn't decrease my temps as much as I had hoped. With the old cooler, I saw 59c under load; now load temps hover around 52c, and that's with the addition of an 80mm exhaust fan and removal of BIOS fan control.

Ultimately, though, reliability is gong to be more important than performance. I bought this cooler for use with a system which sees 100% CPU utilization 24/7 with the SETI@home client. Hopefully this fan will last the full 45000 hours it's rated for.

5 out of 5 eggsworks well

Pros: Works, cools the chip well, does what it's supposed to, value priced, with a little modification works on many other sockets as well.

Cons: Not as quiet as some other solutions out there

Other Thoughts: Value priced cooler for old AMD socket A chips, cools them well, not much else to say. You can't expect heatpipes or temps to stay at 30C with something this inexpensive, but it does the job.
