5 out of 5 eggsNICE!

Pros: quite
Soft Start (initially 5V)
Comes with controller, if you need one

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have a server built in a Fractual case, and since it sits in my home office, I wanted the Server to be QUITE. This unit installs on a side panel, and with 5 other 140MM fans the Server runs 30 degrees over ambient while whisper quite from one foot away.

While the unit is rarely powered down, glad to see the fan has a "Soft Start" initial voltage of 5 volts, which then goes to 12. Bear in mind that any controllers will lower these voltages.

Darn good fan, IMO.

2 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted

Pros: I bought this over at FrozenCPU.com at the end of March after researching 180mm fan options on both sites. Unfortunately, only a couple of brands make fans this size, and this is one of the better ones (if you're going to buy a monster fan, why skimp and buy a sleeve bearing one?)

So what does this fan do right? It's quiet, except if you decide to turn it all the way up, and even with the entire open top panel of my Fractal Midi, it made the case have positive air pressure. Other fans might be quieter or have higher pressure, but this hits a nice middle ground for both.

On top of that, it has a long sleeved cable, and a somewhat cheap but perfectly fine speed control knob. Why'd I buy it at frozencpu? Because they sold a matching silverstone 180mm fan filter that I couldn't find anywhere else, a feature Fractal's case lacks on the side panel.

Cons: Why only 2 stars? After about a month and a half of near silent operation, this fan now makes a constant loud whirring noise. Time of warranty? 30 days. Think I'll keep the $5 dust filter and try and find a better fan.

Other Thoughts: Had it continued to work as before, it would have been a very nice fan.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you very much for purchasing a SilverStone. 30 days is the time you can return products back to vendor, but the FM181 and all SilverStone fans are covered by a 1 year manufacturer's warranty. Please download the "USA RMA form for end-users" from the page below and following the instruction on it to initiate the return with us:

4 out of 5 eggsEffective cooling

Pros: Whisper quiet. Comes with speed control. Doesn't take up that much wattage. Very effective in cooling my 180mm CPU water radiator from Coolit. Worth the price for its amazing performance. Great packaging. Build quality looks more expensive than it is.

Cons: Does not come with mounting screws. Be aware that your standard 120mm fan screws are too short for this fan. So find something in advance. 1 egg taken out for this because this fan would be useless if you have nothing to mount it with..right Silverstone?

Other Thoughts: I wish Silverstone would sell this in black.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality fan!

Pros: This Fan moves a lot of air, and It's quiet when not on high. The quality is excellent and the plastic is also of very good quality.

Cons: When on high this fan gets loud and whiny. its heavy so I would skip the rubber grommets.

Other Thoughts: I wish it had a black frame.

5 out of 5 eggsHot dang this is just what my airplane needed!

Pros: This is SOOO much cheaper than a Sikorsky or a SeaKnight! This thing moves a ton of air. Between this and my air cooler, my AMD 965 runs prime 95 at 44 C.

Cons: Doesn't fit my 180mm slots in my case.

Makes my feet cold because it draws so much air.

If you mount it backwards your case will be blown across the room, destroy your wall and hover around in your kitchen. . . JK.

Other Thoughts: This fan blows. Lol. Haven't used the fan controller which is made to mount. . . in the back of the computer? Why would you make a fan controller that mounts in the back? Anyway, rigged in (because it didn't fit my case, don't know whose fault that is. 180mm fan should fit in a 180mm case opening.)

So, that's how much I like it, enough to zip tie it into my case. It's about as loud as a really angry cpu fan, like if your cpu was running a lot of processes and needed to get cooled quick, maybe a tad louder. Case is beside me and it's definitely audible but it's not unbearable. Probably be better under a desk if you hate fan-noise.

This thing really moves some air! You can feel it DRAW air from 3" away. it's good stuff.

5 out of 5 eggsFractal Define XL

Pros: After figuring out that you have to use the included fan controller I finally got this thing to spun up! It was only running at ~500rpm prior. At full speed, it moves a ton of air and is relatively quiet. Huge improvement over the stock 180mm in the Fractal Define XL Case.

Cons: My fan controller seemed to be wired backwards. L = High/ H = Low. Not worth an egg...

Other Thoughts: Previous reviews that mentioned this fan hitting the motherboard in the Fractal XL are correct. Instead of removing the standoff and forcing the issue, just get some 400 grit sand paper and sand the corner down a little. I made a mark with a sharpie where it was making contact and it took 5 minutes worth of work for a nice fit. It was well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful & Relatively Quiet

Pros: The 180mm fan is relatively quiet compared to the 120mm silverstone fan, which produces 36db of sound.

I connected the fan to the powersupply, but it requires a minute to begin spinning at full capacity.

I love the noise/air displacement ratio.

I installed the fan in my antec lanboy air, in the middle of the case behind the graphics card, perfect fit.

Cons: I did not recognize any major problems.

Other Thoughts: It has been functioning without any problems two consecutive months.

4 out of 5 eggsNot a bad fan (once you figure out its quirks)

Pros: High CFM, at relatively low noise levels.

Includes PCI slot rheostat if you like that sort of thing.

Cons: Unless you connect the rheostat (or an included full speed jumper cable) to the second proprietary connector on the fan the it will only run at its slowest setting which is barely sufficient to make it start spinning.

No manual was included in my box, so there was no way of knowing this. I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out why I wasn't getting the expected airflow, until i stumbled upon the solution.

Other Thoughts: Now that I've figured out how it works, its a great fan with comparatively low noise levels and good airflow.

5 out of 5 eggsReally Good Fan

Pros: Moves a lot of air
VERY quiet-even at max airflow I can barely hear it
Great build quality

Cons: Price, but that's negotiable since Silverstone basically monopolizes 180mm fans.
White color

Other Thoughts: I bought this fan over the other two Silverstone fans because reviewers for the black version of this fan said that it was constructed poorly, and I don't want a led fan in my case.

I replaced the original 180mm fan in my Fractal Design Define XL with this one since the original fan moved very little air. I had a little problem installing this fan because it's a few mm thicker than the stock fan (25mm vs 38mm). I had to remove the standoff from the case in order to fit this fan, which means that I couldn't screw the motherboard down into place in that area (top left), but that doesn't make me want to install the original back in. For me, it's not a big deal. Despite that issue, this is a really good fan and I highly recommend it to anybody thinking about replacing their 180mm fans.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Even at max speed I can barely hear it inside my RV02. Pushes more air than the stock RV02 fans, unless you have the newer RV02 with the air penetrator fan which push about the same as these.

Cons: Kinda pricey, however, I understand that it is a lot of plastic and a very niche item so the price is justified in my opinion.

Other Thoughts: I replaced the middle fan in my RV02 with this and used the shorting connector to save on wires since I planned to run it at max anyways. Lowered temps a few degress C.
