Xigmatek's European design team is dedicated to becoming a world leader in CPU thermal cooling by producing reliable, efficient and environmentally sound cooling systems. They don't cut corners with their products to deliver on their promise and the HDT-S1283 is no exception.

Designed to attach easily to the motherboard of all Intel Socket 775 and AMD Socket AM2, 754, 939 and 940 CPUs, the HDT-S1283 is ready to go right out of the box. No tools are required, nor is removal of the motherboard, thanks to its light weight and anti-vibration technology. Three large, liquid-filled, U-shaped 8mm pure copper heat pipes directly touch the heatspreader of the CPU for maximum transference of damaging heat away from the processor and up to the aluminum convection fins.

The heatsink is cooled by the 120mm fan mounted on the side of the array which blows nearly 100 CFM of cooling air at its maximum 1500 RPM. Its support for PWM lets the BIOS control the speed of the fan based on the CPU's thermal needs – lowering the fans speed and noise during off-peak cycles. A spoiler on the back side of the cooling array diverts air to cool components around the CPU as well.

  • newegg Superior Heat Dissipation and Cooling Performance Three U-type heatpipes integrated with H.D.T. (Heatpipe Direct Touch) technology and high-density aluminum fins maximize heat transfer and dissipation. Plus a huge 120mm rifle bearing fan runs efficiently to deliver unparalleled cooling performance.
  • newegg PWM Function The PWM function automatically adjusts fan speeds according to the CPU temperature for efficient cooling and minimized fan noise.
  • newegg Easy Installation The XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 features a 3-in-1 application retention module design for easy and quick installation without additional tools or the need to remove the motherboard from your case.
  • newegg Universal Socket Compatibility The XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 features broad compatibility with AMD socket 754, 939, 940, and AM2 platforms, as well as the Intel LGA 775 platform.

3 out of 5 eggsAMD compatible, or is it?

Pros: Quite.
Lower temperature than stock cooler.
Easy mounting for boards with AM3 RM.

Cons: It's not so AMD compatible as you might think. See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: This cooler will only mount in up/down orientation on AM3 RM. If your board doesn't have the extra room between the CPU socket and memory slots AND if you're using high profile RAMs, the cooler will block out two memory slots if used in push configuration. Even if you are using low profile RAMs, clearance between the heatsink and the memory module is ... ... tight.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Cooler!

Pros: Great Cooler, cools my Q6600 nicely. I have it overclocked to 3.2Ghz and it keeps it under 40C idle, 50C on load for over 3 years. Easy to set up and quiet operation.

Cons: The push pins mounting isn't my favorite, it works but I would rather have a mounted bracket be included. I bought one instead out of preference.

Other Thoughts: Q6600 @ 3.2ghz
4x2GB Patriot Viper DDR2 800
Nvidia GTX 460
Corsair 750W PSU

5 out of 5 eggsGreat but....

Pros: Keeps my 8150 FX cool. When Prime95 was running the temp was hovering at 67c. (I used artic silver)

Cons: It's is rediculously huge! My gigabyte AM3+ MB, I had to remove memory modules in order to make it fit. So I went from 16GB to 8GB memory.

I will work on this later. Also, I am not removing an egg for this because it works VERY well.

Other Thoughts: Installation was easy for me. I used the AMD clip and placed the fan on per the instructions. No issues here.

My full sized case fits it in without having to leave the skin off.

I hope this helps. Cheers!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Far more quiet than stock heatsink & fan.
Far cooler than stock heatsink & fan.
Fits nicely on my GA-880GA-UD3H.
Fits nicely in my Antec P180.

Cons: Instructions useless. Plenty of videos out there detailing instillation.

Other Thoughts: Comes with a few extra bits to mount depending on what socket you are using. Don't worry if you have some parts left over. Worth the money.

4 out of 5 eggs3.5 years, still works like a champ

Pros: After 3.5 years of use this thing still performs like a champ. The fan is still operating fully and the heat sink still absorbs the CPU heat (that part really can't fail).

Cons: When assembling this computer back in July '08, installing the fan was the hardest/most painful thing to do. I almost bent my motherboard trying to get it on.

Other Thoughts: Great cooler that does it's job, but installation was brutal.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cools very well and is very quiet. My AMD FX-8150 now idles in the upper 30's/low 40's, with load, in the low to mid 50's under Prime95. This is a major improvement over the stock fans in terms of sound and heat. If you use an AMD motherboard and have a case with fans on the top, you can get even better cooling than simply exhausting the heat out the back. I'm using a Silverstone TJ10 case and have the fan drawing air from the top, but also have an intake fan drawing cool air in right above it. The fan isn't silent, but is quiet and moves enough air for most applications.

Cons: Most of the cons are small things that don't impact the overall rating. On AMD systems, the standard retention clip remains, but it isn't secure. This can make placing the unit a bit hit or miss as you would want it centered. The included silicone thermal compound shouldn't be used with copper, use a silver-based compound. The fins are delicate and they are sharp, be careful, I have a few scratches from them. I do suggest using the "double line" method of putting thermal compound on the non-copper area, which is preferred with HDT setups. Installing the fan to the heatsink is a pain, have pliers handy.

Other Thoughts: This does its job and does it well. Transporting the computer may be a bit tricky given the size of the unit and how it is attached using AMD's stock mounting system. If you don't move the PC much, it should be fine, but if you transport it, double check to make sure it is still secure before turning it on. Still, installing a high performing unit without the need to remove the motherboard makes this a very attractive HSF.

4 out of 5 eggsCools like a champ! Installs like barb wire!

Pros: I have a Quad Core Extreme QX9650 that was running max temp (Prime 95) at 86c with default cooler.. My max temp is now 64C! Amazing! 6 Stars if I could.

Cons: This thing is large and a pain in the rear to install (and I had the easy "pop-in" 775 install . The instructions are as sparse as any I've seen. the fins bend very easily. I had to remove a case fan and my side mounted vent for this bad boy. 2 Stars for the install

Other Thoughts: Recap:
6 stars for cooling
2 stars for install
4 Stars overall

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome CPU Cooler

Pros: Dropped temps of my Q9550 @ 2.83GHz under P95 load from 73C to 49C.

I was then able to overclock my Q9550 @ 3.8GHz (447*8.5 1.3625V in BIOS) under P95 load with max core temp of 67C.

Cons: It came with only one (1) fan.

Can be difficult to install to motherboard with fan already attached to heatsink and motherboard already installed into a case... luckily I have thin fingers so I was able to install relatively easily.

Price? I got it for $20 (used).

Other Thoughts: Worth it if you want to overclock or if you have issues with your CPU temps...
