Excellent once you mod it
- Pros: I've been building computers for a long time, and this is by far the most effective air cooler I have ever tried. I'm running a Phenom II 940 overclocked to 3.8 and it won't load over 52C even with OCCT running the thing at 99.99% load across all four cores for an hour. And that is with a single fan. It will mount two. It's effectiveness is good enough to give it 5 stars even though I had to modify it to fit. See cons.
- Cons: I had to modify it to fit. When I mounted it on my AM2 system I had exactly the opposite problem of a previous AM2 reviewer: it was too loose. It was so loose that I could put it on and take it off with the retention clip fully engaged. I took the clip off of an old Thermaltake cooler and ground it down to the right proportion and it fits perfectly. An easy fix for me, but probably not for some others.
Also, as mentioned, it's huge, but anyone looking to buy something like this is smart enough to measure the heat sink and the case before buying it. Right?
- Other Thoughts: If you can deal with a little frustration and modification, and you need the best air cooler out there, this is it.
Difficult to Install
- Pros: Cools well, solidly build, keeps the core i7 processors cool with two 120mm fans. Make sure you run a push/pull configuration.
- Cons: This heastink it just frustrating to install because you can't reach two of the screws with a screwdriver. For someone with big hands like me, it is hard to get that too to work well even in a large case. I have build quite a few computers in my day, and this heatsink is the most frustrating I have installed yet (which is saying something). I am sure that it may be a conbination of my motherboard and case (Asus Rampage II Extreme and Cosmos 1000 Case), but I really got frustrated with this one. I much prefer the installation of the Prolimatech Megahelms heatsink!
- Other Thoughts: Works well, I would rate it as my third favorite air cooling solution for the core i7. I have a few different ones right now, and the Megahelms is my favorite. By the way, this heatsink is HUGE...Make sure to measure first. Also, you have to run the heatsink south to north (air) to fit two 120mm fans. If you run it east to west, then the fans will block a ram slot on most 1366 Mb's.
For the AMD no good
- Pros: For a intel processor the mounting system is very good.
- Cons: DON'T buy this if you are going to be putting it on a AMD unit. The mounting is very poor. This heatsink is WAAAY to big for the AMD style of mounting. It's contact with the AMD cpu is to tight and after installing with the supplied AMD hold down bracket it bent the pipes where the unit mounts on the cpu. I first thought I had put to much compound on but knew better so I ran a few more tests, when my temps under load were 65C I removed the HSF and discovered the the copper contact pipes had bend inwards from the installation.
After searching the internet I see I'm not the only one that has had this problem. Xigmatek did not make the Hammer for the AMD family. Shame on them.
- Other Thoughts: I now have a large $60.00 paper weight.
