In early September, Intel has finally released the long-anticipated Socket 1156. In following pursuit, Prolimatech released the bigger and better version of the Megahalems. Now it comes with extra set of fan clips for even better cooling results. It also includes the new all-in-one backplate for an easy, convenient installation on Intel Socket 775, 1156, and 1366. Also added to the upgrade package is the new material for the top fin on this "Mega" heatsink. This particular fin is made of all stainless steel. Its main features incorporate a greater resistance to accidental scratches and oxidation. For regular maintenance, all you have to do is lightly polish it with a soft cloth so you’ll always have that new out-of-the-box shiny looks; great for showing off at LAN parties and to your friends!

  • newegg Always Shine Top fin is made of scratch-resistant stainless steel to preserve shine. No matter how long it works, it looks brand new.
  • newegg All for Supreme Cooling Six Ø 6mm heatpipes are lined up in a straight line to prevent air back draft allowing air to easily pass through the heatsink body. Minimal air resistance between fins allows best balance between noise and performance. Wide gaps between fins with mathematically calculated thickness to maximize best air-to-surface cooling rate. Plus, included easy-to-apply high grade thermal compound is a good sidekick to this heatsink. Two sets of fan clips fan clips allow for a duo-fan installation for upgraded cooling. (For all out performance, fan RPM at 1600 or above is recommended.)
  • newegg Broad Compatibility Megahalems Revision C features easy-to-install retention mechanism for LGA 775, 1366, 1155, and 1156 and AM2/AM2+/AM3. The only difference between Rev B. and Rev C. is that the AMD hold down hardware is included in the Rev C.

3 out of 5 eggsA little disapointing

Pros: Heavy which means decent thermal mass. Nickle plated copper and aluminum makes for a visually appealing product. The fins are not razor sharp like most CPU coolers. Fan brackets are included for 80,120 and 140mm fans. Socket 2011 installation is straight forward and the brackets feel very solid.

Cons: I've not run across this problem before on any CPU cooler, but the base plate is domed but approximately 1/32". The only contact surface with the CPU will be in the direct center of the CPU. A little polishing enlarged the contact surface to about the same size of an Intel CPU die, but you are out of luck with an elongated AMD die.

Other Thoughts: I ordered a pair of these for a socket 2011 Xeon build as they fit the space requirements well, but the domed bottom has me unsure as to the cooling characteristics.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent passive cooler.

Pros: Great cooling. Low noise. Assuming decent case ventilation this cooler doesn't need a dedicated fan.

Cons: Not free.

Other Thoughts: This is the second one of these I've bought. The first has been happily (passively) cooling a 130 watt Xeon 24/7 for over 4 years. Current configuration (Xeon E3-1220v3) maintains core temps around 30-40C under normal load, without a dedicated fan. Temp stabilizes around 65-67C under 100% load. This is just a great product.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks for me

Pros: I had the Rev B on my i5, when I purchased a new i7 I ordered off Newegg without thinking. I have Akasa piranha in push pull configuration, the cpu hasn't pushed passed 63c under full load prime 95 for me. It is big, and I really didn't look at the other cpu coolers out there, but my rev B was reliable and kept things cool, so hoping it will be the same story with the Rev C

Cons: none

3 out of 5 eggsMEH -gahalmes

Pros: This thing is huge. Not a lot of options for coolers this size.

Cons: 1. It rattles. I may have a defect. But, if you google "Megahalmes Rattle" you can find a good youtube demo. So much for a silent solution. It adds a little jangle whenever my HDD kicks on.

2. Fans mount with wire clips. I would much prefer the rubber gaskets used by other mfgs. The wire clips are design for specific fan sizes and not, for example, prolimatech's own vortex series. I ended up strapping it on using some 14 AWG copper wiring I had lying around.

3. The symmetrical design makes it harder to avoid RAM, etc.

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm disappointed. I got this for a silent HTPC build. I'm not really interested in overclocking or ultra efficient cooling. If you don't want to bend you own wire clips, get a standard depth fan. Fits fine in the Fractal R4 case. On the Asus Z87-pro, with the thin Vortex fan, I can use 3 out of the 4 RAM slots without problem. The 4th might be tight, didn't check for sure.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is working wonderfully. I've got it set up on a 3930k with a Nexus BASIC D12SL-12 with a 40C cooling target. It's been running great and quiet.

Cons: LGA2011 mounting requires a different set of screws which still aren't supplied. Newegg also doesn't currently carry them, nor do most prolimatech suppliers, making them tough to source.

Height is a bit low forcing a slightly elevated fan position if you have extended height ram sticks due to heat spreaders.

Other Thoughts: I bought this with the intent of cooling at stock speeds quietly. For that it does a great job. I've not tested OCing at all with this chip/cooler combo but temp and speed ratings imply I have plenty of wiggle room and that's with a very low noise/CFM fan.

3 out of 5 eggsCPU Heat Radiator

Pros: Quality components except for broken nut. Willing to take another chance with identical replacement cooler since it's generally good quality.

Cons: One of the aluminum mounting strip adapters for the Intel mount shipped with a broken barrel nut making it impossible to affix one of the spring bolts. The barrel nut pulled right out of the hole leaving the hex head behind when I tried to install the spring screw. Entire build came down to a broken $0.10 nut.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately had progressed to the point in the build where the MB was installed with most of the connections completed... CPU cooler was last step prior to powering up. Had to disassemble all and pull the MB to remove the cooler mounting bracket installed on the backside of the MB. When the replacement arrives, first will inspect all components right down to the attach nuts prior to any installation. Particularly important since this mount requires a backside support bracket on the MB.

5 out of 5 eggsAn amazing heatsink for a real DIY builder!

Pros: Lowered temps on my O/C'd processor by 15*C. Difference would have been smaller more than likely though if my previous cooler had been any good!

The heatsink is large and well constructed, not much else to say! Love it!

Cons: LARGE. I measured out my case before hand to make sure it would fit. Just enough room!

Wobbles and pulls on board when pushed/pulled. This is due to the only fault I have with this heatsink, the single strip that holds it down to the mounting hardware.

Other Thoughts: NZXT 210-elite
Intel Core 2 Quad O/C'd to 2.93ghz
DFI Lanparty JR P45-T2RS
8GB DDR2-800

I needed better cooling for my C2Q. This fit the bill perfectly. I have it setup with a PMW Cougar 120mm fan attached to the case, with a duct running from the fan to the heatsink (only 2" away anyway). On-Chip temp stays nice and low, for a G0 Q6600 at least!
