These fans have been specifically developed to deliver significant airflow while maintaining low noise levels. Silent Series R2 fans are available in sizes from 40mm up to 140mm.

All new Silent Series R2 fans are equipped with high performance hydraulic bearings, increasing both fan performance and reliability. The 120mm and 140mm fans come with a low-speed adapter, which lets you choose between two different rotation speeds without a separate fan controller. Each fan 60mm and larger is packaged with both 4 metal screws and 4 rubber screws to ensure maximum fan-mounting options. Using the rubber screws allows mechanical decoupling from the case itself, reducing vibrations and decreasing the noise level (40 and 50mm feature metal mounting screws only).

2 out of 5 eggsDidn't last long

Pros: Quiet.

Cons: In addition to the lack of a plug adapter (mentioned in my previous review), I feel obligated to mention that less than a week after installation, this fan was no longer silent.

Other Thoughts: (This review is an update to my previous one...I don't see any way for me to edit the previous review, so I'm just adding a new one).

I rated this fan with five eggs previously, based solely on the immediately observed performance when I first installed it. In hindsight, I should have let it run for awhile before I submitted a review.

Just a few days after I installed the fan, it started making a soft rumbling/grinding noise. While the fan is still somewhat less annoying than the fan with a high-pitched whine it replaced, and in many situations would probably not even be noticed, it is no longer satisfactory in this application (living room/home theater setup).

Of course, lacking a plug adapter when I was installing it, I simply cut the wires and resoldered a different plug to the fan, to fit the case connection it needed to fit. This of course renders the fan ineligible for a replacement by Newegg (a risk I understood from the outset).

It's too bad. The fan had great promise. But while $10 isn't a huge amount of money to gamble (and little enough that's it's debatable how many rounds of RMA it'd be worth going through anyway), it's enough that I doubt I'll be trying any Fractal Designs products for a while.

5 out of 5 eggsAs advertised

Pros: Quiet. That's kind of the point.

Cons: The only thing I can think of that would make me like this fan better is for it to come with multiple plug options (e.g. an adapter to allow connection with a mini two-pin plug).

This is not really a "con" so much as a "wish list item".

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace the fan in a two-disk RAID enclosure. The old fan wasn't really all that loud, but it did have an annoying high-pitched whine.

With the new fan, I can't hear the fan at all (unless I put my ear right up to it). The drives, which are themselves pretty quiet, are the only audible parts now.

I did have to splice and solder the old fan connector onto this fan, because this one comes with a three-pin connector and the enclosure only has a power header for a two-pin mini connector. But that was a minor inconvenience.

5 out of 5 eggsNice and Quiet!

Pros: Quiet! That's why I bought it.

Cons: Reduced air flow, but I expected that.

Other Thoughts: I removed a cheap fan from a 25 amp power supply that was annoyingly loud, and installed this one. Before, I annoyed all my coworkers in neighboring cubicles it was so loud. Now, I can't even hear it run unless I'm with a couple feet of it. Airflow has been reduced, but I don't use the power supply anywhere near it's rated output, so I think I'll be OK. Nice upgrade!

2 out of 5 eggscheap but loud

Pros: *cheap
*good airflow

Cons: *loud
*can click

Other Thoughts: given that you will not be replacing most fans, and the benefit of a silent system is so great, I would advise you to buy something more expensive but quieter

5 out of 5 eggsVery quiet and works

Pros: Very quiet. I've got a decently quiet system and this was unnoticeable among the other noise in the system. The low RPM rocks. I bought it for my Sabertooth P67 motherboard as an assist fan and it works perfect for that. It reduces the temperatures down on motherboard components by 15 degrees.

Cons: I did see it not spin up as the system turns on once, however it keeps trying and by the time the system boots, it has always been on. The low RPM may lead to a low torque and it may take a few tries to spin up I'm guessing. For me the fan is non-critical (as I've gone more than a year without) so the ultra-quiet is better than a 100% guarantee that it's spinning. I'm going to watch and see if it ever fails to spin after a full boot cycle (a temperature sensor should warn me) and I'll report back here if it does.

Other Thoughts: Very quiet! I'm very happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: I bought this for my Panasonic Surround sound system that had a bad and would no longer turn on. Newegg had the 3 pin 50mm fan I was looking for and was a perfect match. The fan is super quite and is keeping my system nice and cool.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If your looking for a replacement fan this is the one to get.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: Quiet, pretty white blades

Cons: Installed and then it would not start working unless I poked one of the blades with a small tie down. All it did was do a small jerk when power was started but did not spin, once I force started it, it was quiet but could not leave it in system for fear of not working by itself. Just got mad with it and threw against a wall because it was not worth the hassle of going through all the return b/s for eight dollars.

Other Thoughts: Will never buy another Fractal product
