Oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves, no friction, extremely quiet

HYDRO-DYNAMIC-BEARING TECHNOLOGY

We defined HDB to Hydro Dynamic Bearing. An oil seal design that has a higher reliability and advantage than conventional fan motor design.
1. High revolution precision, low vibration noise
2. Fluid seal design provide extremely long life span
3. Surface tension effect, runs more smoothly with no friction, extremely quiet
Fluid seal design is achieved through the use of oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves. Bend area is centralized oil and prevented oil leakage out of motor (oil leakage is main problem of sleeve bearing, short life time) . Friction between shaft and HDB will be down due to herringbone structure reaction(friction between the metal is disadvantage of ball bearing, noise & waste heat problem). So HDB conquer sleeve & ball bearing disadvantage to become more reliable & quiet technology for Top-notch fan. Such design concept is successful and applicative on HDD, and we can see a reliability application in it.

HDB, Ball, & Sleeve comparison

Sleeve Ball Hydro-Dynamic
revolution precision mediocre good best
vibration noise mediocre loud quiet
life span (hrs) 30,000 50,000 >150,000
waste heat high high low
Cost low high high

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Can't get over how quiet this fan really is, used it to replace a PSU fan with a really noisy bearing, but even when the PSU wasn't noisy the fan was loud, this one I have to look at it to see if it is spinning it is so quiet

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsInitial Impressions

Pros: A quick note here: As the title suggests, these are my first impressions of these fans after using them for about a day, and the things I list here may change as I continue to use these fans. My very first reaction when I received these fans was - in all honesty - awe at just how vibrant these fans are. They feel exceptionally well made and high-quality, so much so that even the packaging itself feels high-quality, for whatever that's worth.

I purchased a set of two (2) of these fans after a hardware malfunction left my motherboard unable to properly control fan speeds anymore and I needed quieter fans to replace my existing ones. The installation of these fans are as to be expected; either screw it in or pop the rubber tool-less pins through, plug them in, and you're good to go. These fans are incredibly quiet. I wouldn't say they make no noise or are completely quiet as a number of other reviews have stated, but they are remarkably low noise. Not only that, but they move a very decent amount of air while being so quiet. These fans move nearly as much air at 1,200 RPM as my previous fans did at about 1,900 RPM, and the noise difference between the sets of fans is like night and day.

All in all, these fans do not disappoint. They are just as gorgeous to look at as they are to hear (or lack there of, as the case may be), and my impressions so far is that these are some of the best fans I've ever had the pleasure of using in a system. The color is beautiful, the blade design allows for incredible amounts of airflow even at such low RPM, and the power cable is plenty long enough to easily route it around your case and hide it away to be nice and neat. The rubber feet and pins make these already quiet fans even more so by isolating it as much as possible from the chassis to reduce the sound of vibration.

I would definitely recommend these fans. They're a bit pricey, but it's well worth it based off of first impressions. At 300,000 rated MTBF (or approximately 34 years), if you treat these fans well, they'll practically last you a lifetime - barring any faults in manufacturing.

Cons: Despite all the good things I have to say about these fans, there is a couple things that could be a tad bit annoying to certain people, in particular with the mounting hardware. While it's not a huge deal in the long term, the included screws - should you choose to go that route instead of using the rubber pins - are all silver despite the black-and-orange color scheme of the fan. Now, this probably won't be an issue for many people as the rear of many cases are silver or white anyways, but if you have a black case (like I personally do) then the silver screws stand out like a sore thumb. Obviously, this isn't an issue if you use the rubber pins - which I would highly recommend - as they are all black.

Speaking about the rubber pins, a tiny gripe I have with them is that the rubber is very stiff, meaning it was hard to pull them through my fans unless I stretched them out a bit before hand. Obviously, this will change with age and again it isn't a huge issue, but I figured it was still worth mentioning regardless.

Other Thoughts: As a side note, as this is neither really a pro or a con, as others have noted, there is no instructions for how to install the fan with the rubber pins. For anyone that knows how to do it, it's as obvious as can be, however not everyone knows. Once you do know, though, you'll understand why they probably didn't include instructions. To install the fan with the rubber pins, all you have to do is pull the pin through your case and then pull it through the screw holes on your fan until it pops into place. It can take a bit of force, but don't worry, you probably won't damage anything as long as you're careful about it.

5 out of 5 eggsFive years and still perfect.

Pros: Quiet
Reliable
Outstanding air flow for the sound rating

Cons: Don't offer 200mm size.
They hurt if you stick your wang in them.

Other Thoughts: Guys... I just don't write reviews. My system is now about 5 years old. I leave it on 24/7. I just tore the whole system down to check out the fans. All of my fans with sleeve bearings were toast - noisy or not working. I bought two of these Cougars for my H80 and they are still running like new 5 years later. They still have among the best noise:performance ratios I could find. The fluid bearning are no joke. If you buy these you will never have to replace them.

5 out of 5 eggsWow...

Pros: I am not one to spend $15+ for a single fan. However I needed something quiet and powerful for my new build so I gave this a shot.

This fan is designed to be quiet yet get the job done. I hooked this up in my Silverstone Temjin TJ08B-E as an exhaust fan and wow does this thing move some air!

-Hydro bearings
-Designed to be quiet
-Pulls a lot of air (at least in my experience as an exhaust fan)
-Even includes 3pin to Molex adapter (did not need)

I highly recommend this fan. My previous setup I ran the CoolerMaster 4pack of 120mm fans, and compared to those this thing is a leaf blower without the noise. I will be purchasing more of these in the future.

Cons: Cost, however this is justified given the quality of the design and performance of the unit.

5 out of 5 eggsBest fan money can buy

Pros: This fan is a high velocity low speed fan that just keeps running. I have 4 of them in my computer and have dropped my temps by 10F

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If your thinking about buying this fan stop and just do it.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Quiet, rubber grommets and rubber mounting plugs are great for a vibration free install. I have several of these for several months now and they work great with speed control on my motherboard although they really aren't loud at full speed anyway.

Cons: I have not had any problems with these fans

Other Thoughts: The rubber plugs are very easy to use you just need to keep tension on the tab until it seats. In some tight area's you may not be able to get a hold of the tab to pull it, using a needle nose pliers can work just don't tear the rubber.
