COUGAR VORTEX PWM 120mm Fan: PWM-FUNCTION

PWM-FUNCTION

PWM stands for Pulse Width Modulation. The 4-Pin connector allows the mainboard to control the fan speed from 800-1500RPM. Fan speed is controlled by the PWM-signal, which delivers a value between 0-100%, the operating voltage remains a constant 12V

Oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves, no friction, extremely quiet

HYDRO-DYNAMIC-BEARING TECHNOLOGY

We defined HDB to Hydro Dynamic Bearing. An oil seal design that has a higher reliability and advantage than conventional fan motor design.
1. High revolution precision, low vibration noise
2. Fluid seal design provide extremely long life span
3. Surface tension effect, runs more smoothly with no friction, extremely quiet
Fluid seal design is achieved through the use of oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves. Bend area is centralized oil and prevented oil leakage out of motor (oil leakage is main problem of sleeve bearing, short life time) . Friction between shaft and HDB will be down due to herringbone structure reaction(friction between the metal is disadvantage of ball bearing, noise & waste heat problem). So HDB conquer sleeve & ball bearing disadvantage to become more reliable & quiet technology for Top-notch fan. Such design concept is successful and applicative on HDD, and we can see a reliability application in it.

HDB, Ball, & Sleeve comparison

Sleeve Ball Hydro-Dynamic
revolution precision mediocre good best
vibration noise mediocre loud quiet
life span (hrs) 30,000 50,000 >150,000
waste heat high high low
Cost low high high

5 out of 5 eggsFavorite Fans

Pros: versatile, quiet, high CFM, great mm-H2O performance

Cons: NA

Other Thoughts: I have 4 of these fan inside my computer. I have owned 5 different fans. GELID FN series, corsair performance Pressure series, corsair standard, ENERMAX MAGMA, and Noctua NF-F12.
The cougars are my current favorite. First they come in 2 flavors black and orange and just black. They run very quietly. Its a competitions for quietness between the Noctua and the Cougars. The cougars win in terms of looks. These fans also claim high air flow, quiet sound profile, and good air pressure performance.
In the past I had used 2 with my old corsair H70 liquid cooler. Running air through that really increased the noise these fans produce by a lot. This was to keep the CPU temps low. My current build I'm currently just using these fans as case fans. My case is a Corsair 550D. The loudest fans are the Corsair P120's. I have all my fans running at 1000rpm. At that speed all is silent. The cougars can get loud with higher RPM but its just the sound of rushing air.
I would love to do formal testing with all my fans testing CFM and pressure. If I ever find the time I would create a test rig to do this.

5 out of 5 eggsI love these.

Pros: Silent, smooth, blows like a hurricane.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I love these fans. I bought two of them to replace some insanely loud fans I had. They are totally silent and blow harder than the loud ones. Even kicked into high gear I can't hear them. 5/5 for sure.

5 out of 5 eggsToo good to pass up

Pros: I've owned this item for over 3 months and so far it's working flawlessly with no hiccups or problems. This fan helped me go from around 64c while gaming to around 44c. Currently only have the cpu fan, a side fan that works when it wants and this fan as an exhaust which is super quite i can't even hear it. Got it on sale for $10 so i gave it a try. I highly recommend this to anyone who is hesitant in buying it and will be buying more soon.

Cons: Only con that i've experienced so far is that you have to youtube on how to install the rubber screws if this is your first time installing them which can take awhile to insert and you might have to remove your GPU for better working space but once you do, it's worth the effort.

Other Thoughts: Wish it came in other colors but orange isn't that bad..

4 out of 5 eggsNice and Quiet...

Pros: Extremely quiet. PC is right next to my chair. Cannot hear them. With Fluid Bearing, I hope/assume they will last and stay quiet.

Cons: No negatives BUT wish they had (else I missed it) an LED version.

5 out of 5 eggsFans that won't die...

Pros: They move lots of air when used as case fans. I have had no problems with any sort of noise in any mounting configuration. I have two on the top pushing air out and one one it side pulling air through some of my hard drives and one pushing air through my hard drives and one more acting as an exhaust fan at the back of my case. When I bought them a friend recommended them, but they didn't have any PWM speed controlled version out or at least New Egg didn't have them so I got the ones with the resistors to change the speed. I just leave them on full speed as they are extremely quiet. I use my computer for recording music so it has to be quiet. I also have two Noctua coolers for my Opteron 16 core CPU's with two fans each, they are also speed controlled by resistors, but now have PWM speed controlled fans available so that the bios can control them all. I have been waiting for one to die, but no luck. They run all day and often all night most days of the week for the past few years. It looks as though I may just have to get the PWM fans before the ones I have wear out if I want to have the BIOS controll the fan speed. The Cougars are as quiet as the Noctuas. I have a decibel meter I use to balance my speakers for mixing and they read pretty much the same, usually within 1 dB of each other! They also come with a silicone surround that fits the shape of the fan to go between the fan and the case and the option of using bolts/screws or silicone pull through holders. I really fantastic product. The fans that came with my Thermaltake case died within 3 or 4 months. These have been going strong for years!

Cons: None, I suppose if you mounted them incorrectly or had a bad fan (out of round/unbalanced) you could get them to make some noise, but mine don't make hardly any, the dB meter usually reads 17 or 18 dB. If I put the meter in the case and close it and let it read for a few minutes it has never gone over 20dB. The loudest fan in the case is the fan in the power supply, it's a 1600 Watt LEPA.

Other Thoughts: I had thought of using the Cougars on my Noctua Coolers to get the PWM speed control, but it appears they make them now so I'll stick with those for the CPU coolers.

4 out of 5 eggsSuper brittle blades

Pros: nice and quiet, cool looking and blows a lot of air for its speed. still ran with broken blade tip (1/2 of it missing) but with obvious vibration.

Cons: broke a blade by accidentally touching it while running, snapped off and due to balance issues is not repairable

Other Thoughts: maybe i will try plastic welding
