Oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves, no friction, extremely quiet

HYDRO-DYNAMIC-BEARING TECHNOLOGY

We defined HDB to Hydro Dynamic Bearing. An oil seal design that has a higher reliability and advantage than conventional fan motor design.
1. High revolution precision, low vibration noise
2. Fluid seal design provide extremely long life span
3. Surface tension effect, runs more smoothly with no friction, extremely quiet
Fluid seal design is achieved through the use of oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves. Bend area is centralized oil and prevented oil leakage out of motor (oil leakage is main problem of sleeve bearing, short life time) . Friction between shaft and HDB will be down due to herringbone structure reaction(friction between the metal is disadvantage of ball bearing, noise & waste heat problem). So HDB conquer sleeve & ball bearing disadvantage to become more reliable & quiet technology for Top-notch fan. Such design concept is successful and applicative on HDD, and we can see a reliability application in it.

HDB, Ball, & Sleeve comparison

Sleeve Ball Hydro-Dynamic
revolution precision mediocre good best
vibration noise mediocre loud quiet
life span (hrs) 30,000 50,000 >150,000
waste heat high high low
Cost low high high

5 out of 5 eggsCougar Vortex 140mm

Pros: Very quiet and moves a lot of air. I can't hear this fan unless the room is silent, even then it's just the sound of rushing air. Replaced my top exhaust fan with this and it is an incredible improvement. Also, now that I have cougar vortexes almost exclusively in my case, it looks pretty sweet.

Cons: Maybe I'm stupid, but I'm not sure how the rubber pins are supposed to work. It's not worth messing with though anyways because these fans are so well balanced.

Other Thoughts: I've owned the 120mm version of this for a while now and it is still going strong. Also, I have this fan horizontally and it works just fine, no crazy noises. I think the people who are complaining about that got fans with just barely too little oil in the shaft area; so the axle design can't properly circulate the oil when the fan is pointing up or down. I imagine a replacement fan wouldn't make that noise.

5 out of 5 eggsGothraga approved + Quiet

Pros: Vary Quiet, Using on Side panel as Main air intake.
Seems to be working well, i like the Rubber Anti-Vibration Screw's. made mounting the Fan easy.
Only had it running 48 hours or so but seems to be nice.

Cons: 4 Extra Rubber Anti-Vibration Screw's would of bin nice.
There was no papers with info on best mounting position's or Optimal running temp info.
Also would of liked a Cougar Logo sticker for my friends moms car.
Other then that No cons.

5 out of 5 eggsPleased

Pros: Five stars because: bought six of these fans; each one works as advertised. Very quiet operation, even with six of them attached to a Corsair Carbide 300R case.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The rubber mounting things are too cool.

2 out of 5 eggsBad Top fan

Pros: Looks goods, and moves more air...

Cons: Have it for a few days now and start to notice as a top fan it makes a humming sound...checked screws, everything is tight as a button. Not a deal breaker but quietness was one of the main reasons for upgrading...as is now, the top fan actually makes more noise than stock fan...which, I threw out already...

Other Thoughts: I bought two, the one installed in the front still runs quietly.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a difference

Pros: Compare this to stock CoolerMaster fans on CM Storm case, this thing is QUIET!

For a long time, I figure there is no difference between stock and these third party fans...wrong, it definitely moves more air and quieter. The noise from he stock fans finally got to me after 2-yrs.

Cons: None so far...well, first day!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Air Flow & Bad Hum Noise

Pros: - Moves a ton of air, better than my stock Cooler Master fan

Cons: - Made a low pitched hum noise

Other Thoughts: - I bought 2 120mm and 1 140mm fan from Cougar, 2 out of the 3 fans had this low pitched hum noise that was driving me nuts. I am sending them back and will perhaps look at the Noctua fans that everybody seem to rave about.

4 out of 5 eggsGood fans.

Pros: I like the look of these fans first off.

They seem to be made of high quality materials and don't feel cheap.

Move a lot of air

Cons: Seem to be unstable as top fans.
It isn't at all speeds, but i swear they make noise up there more than on the sides.

I now have 2 120s and 2 140s.

Had them all for varying amounts of time and when i turn my pc off, they all continue to spin and stop together, so that seems to suggest quality too.

Other Thoughts: All that design stuff could be gimickry.
But they are Made in Germany, and have lots of science stuff on the box.
If it is I am falling for it.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Fans!

Pros: Installed these in my Lian Li case to replace the old stock ones.

Noticed about a 2-3 degree drop in temps for my northbridge and CPU
About a 1-2 on my GPUs

Using SPECCY to monitor temps.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Got these on a sale, but I would say they're worth it at regular price as well.
