Oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves, no friction, extremely quiet

HYDRO-DYNAMIC-BEARING TECHNOLOGY

We defined HDB to Hydro Dynamic Bearing. An oil seal design that has a higher reliability and advantage than conventional fan motor design.
1. High revolution precision, low vibration noise
2. Fluid seal design provide extremely long life span
3. Surface tension effect, runs more smoothly with no friction, extremely quiet
Fluid seal design is achieved through the use of oil surface tension and hydrodynamic pumping forces provided by grooves. Bend area is centralized oil and prevented oil leakage out of motor (oil leakage is main problem of sleeve bearing, short life time) . Friction between shaft and HDB will be down due to herringbone structure reaction(friction between the metal is disadvantage of ball bearing, noise & waste heat problem). So HDB conquer sleeve & ball bearing disadvantage to become more reliable & quiet technology for Top-notch fan. Such design concept is successful and applicative on HDD, and we can see a reliability application in it.

HDB, Ball, & Sleeve comparison

Sleeve Ball Hydro-Dynamic
revolution precision mediocre good best
vibration noise mediocre loud quiet
life span (hrs) 30,000 50,000 >150,000
waste heat high high low
Cost low high high

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy install; good, useful and complete accessories package. Included mounting options excellent. Nice and quiet. Installed in Rosewill BLACKHAWK Gaming ATX Mid Tower. Installed front with included rubber mounts, installed back with screws due to motherboard hardware placement.

Cons: None as yet.

Other Thoughts: Replaced case top exhaust fan included with Rosewill BLACKHAWK Gaming ATX Mid Tower which got very noisy and died after a year or so.

When installing with screws, the mounting holes in the fan are not pre-threaded. The supplied screws are of the self tapping variety; before installing in the case, simply place the fan on a hard surface, screw in the screws fully (taking care that the screw is not crosswise when starting) , back the screws out and THEN install the fan in the case.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice and Quiet

Pros: Very nice fan. Quiet and efficient enough for my needs.

Cons: Orange color. Wish I could get it in a different color to match my scheme.

Other Thoughts: I love the rubber mounts instead of screws.

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems

Pros: -Look better than noctua fans
-move a significant amount of air
-quiet
-very quiet (dare i say silent?) with the lna that is included.

Cons: -could look better
-I can hear them if I stick my ear next to them. (this might be a compliment)

Other Thoughts: I bought 7 of these and had no problems with any of them. I am using a fan controller for all of them. With my fan controller on low and with the LNA on, these fans can still move a noticeable amount of air (not a whole lot though.) For the fans that are directed at components, i am not using the low noise adapter, and for the fans that are just there for general airflow, i am using the LNA. I don't regret my decision to buy these.

5 out of 5 eggsReplaced my Corsair AF140s

Pros: Incredible value. I replaced my Corsair AF140s (4 of them), with these, and they're as good as the Corsair, if not better. Incredible product, truly. I highly recommend Cougar, and will be using them in my next build.

Cons: I wish Cougar would sell these in all black, instead of having any orange trim pieces. I understand it's their thing, but it takes away from my stealth black setup. You can always paint them, I guess.

Other Thoughts: My configuration consists of 5 fans: 4 140mm, and 1 120mm. I've had Corsair AF120 and AF140 fans, Fractal D2 120mm and 140mm fans and now these, the Cougar 120mm and 140mm fans - and the Cougars are fantastic. I have three mounted vertically and two horizontally - no issues. Especially great while on sale.

5 out of 5 eggsCougar Silent Vortex

Pros: Very quite fan that moves a ton of air and with the vortex technology you can focus airflow very well. I was nervous about using these as an horizontal exhaust fan after reading about horizontal mounting issues with this fan. After installation and much use i can confirm there are no horizontal mount issues ordered five of these 140mm fans and all work great.

Cons: More expensive then your average fan but really its a great price considering the quality tier these fans are in.

Other Thoughts: If your looking for a silent fan that moves lots of air but dont want to spend the money on Noctua fans. This is a great deal for the quality and got it on sale for $14.99

2 out of 5 eggs2 months in....

Pros: Extremely quiet and pushes in alot of air. Most of the air is channeled in the center, which is perfect for my setup. This fan stays quiet even at max RPM.

Cons: After about 2 months in, the fan starts making a rattle noise or a clicking noise. Lowering the RPM does make it go away, but once my fan controller tells it to ramp it up, the noises comes back. I just RMA the fan and waiting on a replacement.

Other Thoughts: Really wished it didn't have any issues, otherwise this fan would have been 5-stars.

5 out of 5 eggsFancy Fan Title Here

Pros: -- This Fan has the potential to completely eliminate your need for water-cooling your CPU and GPU, if placed right
-- If the summertime get too summery for you, just turn the fan around in your case for instant facial cooling

Cons: Not Really

Other Thoughts: Well, its a fan, and it cools.

Other than that I got this because I was somewhat questioning my airflow in my case at the time, I honestly think I don't really need it but wowzers this thing can push some air. I have it mounted on the very top of my case shooting down into the aftermarket cooler for my cpu AND hitting the gpu right behind it. Although that sounds silly because you could just turn it around and vent the air out, I feel that with the fan hitting those components with fresh outside air will work a bit better.

I questioned the rubber mounts that comes with the fan for easy installment without screws from what other reviews had said about them. But I think because I have it sitting directly on top of the case is the reason I haven't had trouble with them.

All in all, great fan, they should start their own A/C cooling line.

5 out of 5 eggsOne of best 140mm Fans

Pros: It's a quiet fan. I use two as top exhaust fans on my Corsair Carbide Air 540 ATX Cube Case. It , also, has great airflow.

Quietness and airflow are the two main qualities that I look for , when buying computer fans. That's why I have three 120mm Noiseblocker M12-S1 as top exhaust fans in my COSMOS II. Why didn't I use these on my Air 540...? Well, the 540 became a test / proving ground for 140mm fans ... Yeah, I've got boxes of rejects...

Cons: The only fault that I see with this is its corners coloring ... .

4 out of 5 eggsQuiet

Pros: Very Very Very Quiet! I can not say enough about how quiet these fans are. I have 120mm and 140mm fans and I just cannot understand how they made them so quiet. The 140's come with a resistor extension to slow the max speed down which is really cool, but not needed because at full blast these fans are quiet

Cons: It just doesnt seem like they push the air like other 140's I have used in the past. I mean, they work, they are moving air and my case is cool, but I feel something is missing. Hence 4 eggs.

Other Thoughts: I would buy these and I would recommend this brand to others looking to build a quiet PC. I work from home. I sit in the office all day long with PC's right next to me. I don't want to hear them. I want them to work. These fans do the trick. I wish Zalman would make PC cooler fans like this.
