Sound-optimised blade geometry and profile:

The NF-R8 is the first fan employing a novel 80mm rotor which was developed by the Austrian Institute for Heat-Transmission and Fan Technology (?sterreichisches Institut f?r W?rme?bertragung und Ventilatorentechnik, ?IWV). Thanks to the special optimisation of the blade geometry towards ultra low noise application, the NF-R8 is up to 10% more quiet than current high-end fans at the same flow rate.

Self-stabilising oil-pressure bearing (SSO bearing):

The NF-R8 series are equipped with a magnetically centred, self lubricating oil-pressure bearing that provides a new level of quietness and long-term stability.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply Amazing!

Pros: Super quiet! Mounted in a case and running 2 of these guys alone as in picture. The room reads at between 42 and 48 db. With the meter exactly one foot above the fans the meter doesn't change. That is full speed not with the rpm limiting cables included. No one, absolutely no one can say these fans can be heard over a fan cooled GPU, CPU, or closed loop market liquid cooling system. Quietest 80mm fans I have ever tested.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Noctua could add a little color to maybe match case interiors but honestly dose not need to for me to keep using them on most builds.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Absolutely quiet. Even when at full speed, I could not hear it. I use it to cool my 850 Pro 256Gb.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The quality of Noctua products has no equal. I don't mind the price, and I can't see it so the color is a non issue. Worth every penny. I am tempted to see if my other fans can be replaced with Noctua's.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Results under Speed Control

Pros: Easy Upgrade, Very Quiet, Includes a variety of power adapters

Cons: Color makes me think things are dusty

Other Thoughts: I did the Tripp-Lite UPS mod that is published on various internet forums and replaced the single-speed two-wire fan in my large UPS with this NOCTUA NF-R8 and the Noise Magic NMT-3 speed control. For my UPS this was an easy change and the sound level difference is stunning. Even with the fan at idle I can feel air entering the inlets, and I have yet to really hear the fan kick into high gear. I am going to keep one or two of these fans and controllers on the shelf in my workshop and reaplce ANY single speed fan I enounter on the bench.

3 out of 5 eggsOwned this fan for 5 years.

Pros: Fan is quiet, initial quality is high, nice rubber vibration isolation plugs come with the fan.

Cons: Fan only lasted 5 years.

Other Thoughts: For the price, this fan should have lasted more than 5 years, I could buy 5 cheap fans for this price and replace them every 3 years. It was running pretty much 24/7 ... but the environment was clean and dust free. The fan was cleaned twice with compressed air during these 5 years, but there was really no dust on them anyhow. The fan started making heavy vibration noises and even though the fan was clean, I tried washed it anyway let dry and plugged it back in -- the noise went away for a few hours but then returned.

5 out of 5 eggsThere quiet if you know how to make them quiet

Pros: They are good fans once you connect the added adapters to them to make them quiet.

Cons: Not outright quiet without adding adapter to them. If you don't read the instructions, you'll overlook it.

Other Thoughts: The fan comes with two small adapters. Looking at them initially you may just wonder what the heck they are for. Each of these wires has a resistor on it to slow the fan down into a lower sound/speed mode and a super low sound/speed mode.

The connector with the black shrinkwrap/tape around the middle wire is the super slow/low sound wire. This is probably the one you want to connect to the fan, then to power.

If you use that one, the fan is completely quiet.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Well constructed
Well packaged
Quiet
Moves a lot of air

Cons: Price
Color

Other Thoughts: Other than the high cost, I have no complaints about this fan. The color scheme isn't great, but these are stuffed in a 4U case that never gets opened. Moves air well and doesn't have any obnoxious rattling or other sub-noises that really irritate me.

4 out of 5 eggsNo issues

Pros: Seem to be quality fans

Cons: Purchased three to cool an older Antec case that was not designed with good cooling in mind. Disappointed that these fans don't seem to move more air then those that are MUCH less expensive. They are also not noticeably quieter than the less expensive fans. Considering the very high price I can't say that they perform any better than the el-cheapo fans.

Other Thoughts: Contacted Noctura support about a technical issue. The person who responded was "disinterested" and provided little value to the experience.

While these are good fans, the thrifty shopper can do just as well and save a pile of money by going with something that is a LOT less expensive.

5 out of 5 eggsNoctua is Nice, Nice, Nice!

Pros: Great cooling performance.
Silent operation.
Excellent mounting design.

Cons: Costly.

Other Thoughts: Noctua delivers the very best performing case and cooler fans on the market. This is one great fan with excellent characteristics. I only use Noctua fans.
