Intel's new Core i7 CPUs mark an exciting advance in processing power, but they definitely require a high quality heatsink if you want to cool them without excessive noise. Noctua offers easy entry into the world of premium quality quiet cooling with the NH-U12P SE2, a premium value package that offers everything you need to cool Core i7 CPUs quietly.

Heat is drawn away from the CPU by the base of the copper heatsink and transferred up into the array of hi-grade aluminum fins for dissipation. A large 120mm fan spins on each side of the array blowing heated air away from the heatsink. The fans' support for PWM lets the BIOS control the speed of the fan based on the CPU's thermal needs – lowering the fans speed and noise during off-peak cycles.

The NH-U12P SE2 ships with Noctua's SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system that combines outstanding compatibility, optimal contact pressure and easy, straightforward installation on Intel LGA1366, 1156 and 775 platforms as well as AMD socket AM2, AM2+ and AM3 platforms. A tube of Noctua's pro-grade NT-H1 thermal compound is bundled in as well.

  • newegg Excellent Quiet Cooling Performance The Noctua NH-U12P consists of 4 dual heat pipes, soldered joints and widely-spaced aluminum cooling fins to guarantee optimal heat dissipation even at low fan speeds.
  • newegg Dual NF-P12 Premium Fan Dual NF-P12 cooling fans feature psycho-acoustic optimizations and Noctua's premium-grade SSO-bearing to achieve exceptional quietness and long-term stability. With the supplied Low-Noise Adapter (L.N.A.) and Ultra-Low-Noise Adapter (U.L.N.A.), you can fine tune the fan speeds for the optimum balance between cooling performance and noise level.
  • newegg SecuFirm2 Multi-Socket Mounting System The SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system provides superior compatibility and contact pressure on the Intel LGA1366, 1156 and 775 platforms, as well as AMD socket AM2, AM2+ and AM3 platforms.
  • newegg NT-H1 Thermal Compound The included pro-grade NT-H1 thermal compound provides extremely low thermal resistance as well as excellent pliability and spreadability. The NT-H1 is packaged in a syringe for easy control of the amount applied.

3 out of 5 eggsHUGE.

Pros: I just installed it and this thing is huge definitely make sure to get the dimensions and check to see if it will cover your ram slots on the mobo. I can only install two sticks of ram on mine. But i didnt measure it. The instructions were great and installation was easy with one exception. Other than that Good heatsink. Note: This is per installation not per running it yet. :)

Cons: Installation of fan clips is annoying at best. Instructions indicate to install fan clips after installed on cpu.... Makes it difficult to install. The motherboard i bought is listed as compatible on noctua's website but they fail to mention that it covers a ram slot. If you buy this measure first and if not plan on using only two sticks of ram instead of four.

-price

Other Thoughts: Happy hunting fellow pc enthusiast.

4 out of 5 eggsStrong and efficient

Pros: The build quality of this cpu cooling system is exceptional. Also, it is really easy to install and the instructions are clear. It's super quiet. Even with on the low noise adapter retain astonishing cooling capacities.

Cons: It is a little bit on the pricey side. If you're looking more for a bang for the buck you might want to consider the cooler master 212 which is not too far behind but at a stunningly low price. Only able to mount in one direction on amd cpu.

Other Thoughts: With my fx 8350 overclock at 4.4ghz I was able to drop the temp to 50°c on load on stock voltage (about 20°c cooler than at 4.0ghz with stock cooler on load) and nearly 10° lower on idle than the stock cooler and all that with a much more quiet system (now my psu is the loudest thing in my system ¬,¬...),

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Quiet. Easy to install. Fits a lot of sockets. Keeps CPU cool under extreme loads.

Cons: It's large, but that's okay with me.

Other Thoughts: I've had this cooler for about 4 months and It hasn't skipped a beat on my 130W TDP i7-950 . I can run an all night compile jop and she'll never throttle back, I get every clock cycle through thick and thin. Basically I have no thermal worries. So, I'm thinking of getting another one for a socket 1150 CPU build I made. I could get a cheaper one since that CPU doesn't have as high a TDP rating as my 1366, but why? If I want to upgrade that CPU this cooler will cool whatever i throw at it especially now that wattage is going lower due to smaller lithography. Also since I've seen this one working I trust it. Now if only Noctua would start making LED fans.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent fan

Pros: Price - I got it on sale a year and a half ago for like, $35.

Materials - solid copper pipes. This fan is sturdy and heavy

Noise - Quiet. I can't hear it over my GPU's fan

Temp - I overclock my AMD CPU from 3.6 to 4.1 and I've never seen it go above 50c, and that's counting hot days.

Cons: It's really big. Unless you have a large (mid ATX +) you're going to have a hard time clipping on the fans, let alone putting it in without taking out the motherboard first. Odds are, you'll have to make a choice between having a top case fan and one of this CPU cooler's fans. See below

On AMD CPU's, the fan only mounts one way. Makes it difficult to use all the case fans that I want to

Other Thoughts: Solid fan that will last a long time. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsCool and quiet

Pros: Great build quality, easy install, cool temps and quiet.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This cooler was very easy to install on my Asus Z87-Pro. It is large though so on this particular motherboard the DIMM slot closest to the cpu is slightly height restricted. Low profile DIMMs would be recommended if using that slot.

Quite good cooling performance, I'm getting around 30°C idle and 65°C load on an overclocked i5 4670K @ 4.2GHz / 1.2V with only 2 140mm case fans in a Fractal R4. This is with the fans running through the Low Noise adapter. The fans are basically silent from a normal distance.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Cooling and Less Noise

Pros: I purchased two of these kits for my home office computers - one is an Intel Core i7 system and one is an AMD APU system. Both installations were very easy. With the SecuFirm2 Multi-Socket Mounting System the CPU heatsink is held firmly in place. The NF-P12 fans operate at a maximum of 1,300 rpm. Cooling is still good while the lower rpm help reduce noise. This tower style heatsink will fit in tower cases that are a minimum of 8 inches wide measured across the top of a tower case.

Cons: 1. Cost.

2. The two NF-P12 fans come with 3-pin connectors instead of 4-pin connectors. There is no pwm feature. If you need or want the pwm feature you'll have to purchase the NF-P12 PWM fan.

3. The CPU heatsink can be installed on an Intel motherboard so that hot air is exhausted out the rear panel of a case or it can be turned 90 degrees so hot air is exhausted out the top panel of a pc case. On AMD motherboards the heatsink can only be mounted so that hot air is exhausted out the top panel of a pc case. If you want to install it so that hot air is exhausted out the rear panel of a pc case you have to purchase a separate Noctua mounting kit.

Other Thoughts: The Noctua NH-U12P SE2 is an older model. It is an excellent cpu cooler that is reasonably quiet and suitable for typical every day use, home office use, and casual gaming. Newegg also sells the Noctua NH-U12S which is a newer model that is more appropriate for gamers and enthusiasts. The NH-U12S comes with 120mm fans that have the pwm feature and operate at a maximum of 1,500 rpm. For hardcore gaming and extreme overclocking Newegg offers Noctua models with 140mm fans operating at 1,500 rpm.
