The NH-L9a is a premium quality quiet CPU cooler for AMD based HTPCs and Small Form Factor systems. At a super-low profile of only 37mm, the NH-L9a is ideal for extremely slim cases and due to its 92x114mm footprint, it provides excellent compatibility with tall RAM modules and other components on mini-ITX mainboards. The custom designed SecuFirm2™ mounting system for AM3+/FM1/FM2/FM2+ makes installation a child's play and thanks to the highly optimised NF-A9x14 premium fan that supports fully automatic speed control via PWM, the NH-L9a runs remarkably quiet. Topped off with Noctua's renowned NT-H1 thermal compound, the NH-L9a fuses everything users have come to expect from Noctua's larger coolers into a super-compact package for slim HTPC systems.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality fan

Pros: Quiet
Fits in Silverstone ML03B case with room to spare
Comes with tons of cooling paste

Cons: A little expensive but very nice quality. You get what you pay for

Other Thoughts: Running a 95w Athlon Quad with the LNA and temps are in the low 40's, in a media cabinet. Not a sound out of this fan.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for HTPC

Pros: With minimal effort, it works perfectly with the A10, Mini-ITX board and case I paired it with. Temps in the mid 70's (C) under heavy load.

Cons: I had to reverse the fan to draw air up through the heatsink (as the PSU for my case mounts directly over the CPU on the board and also pulls air in this direction). I had to use a dremel to remove some of the plastic from the screw holes as one side of the fan has recessed holes, and the other did not. Now both the CPU fan and PSU fan are moving air in the same direction, and this setup is working perfectly.

Other Thoughts: I'm not taking an egg's rating for the fan, but it would be nice if I hadn't had to whip out the Dremel to make this work in my case. (Case is a Lian-Li PC-Q11B, but many other mini-ITX cases also mount a PSU directly over the mobo as this one does)

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent fan

Pros: Silent. This thing is massive. Comes with all mounting equipment and quality thermal paste.

Cons: Doesn't bother me, but some people may find the colors a bit ugly.
For the performance, this thing is definitely worth it.

Other Thoughts: Price of the unit made me nervous. But after receiving the unit and installing it on the system, I have no regrets.

Some motherboards may have an issue with capacitors near the CPU. Thankfully my board did not. RAM modules are close, but do not touch.
System board is: ASRock FM2A75M-HD+

This is a low profile HTPC. The stock fan could be heard while sitting on the couch across the room. This fan, cannot be heard even with the side open and sitting next to it.

Pros: Quiet, efficient, what more do you want?

Cons: throw's my build color scheme off, but its worth it, and can always paint it later

5 out of 5 eggsSweet piece of equipment!

Pros: High quality, smooth operation, quiet, looks good.

Cons: Can't make me a cup of coffee.

Other Thoughts: Worked great on my mini-ITX build, with room to spare.

5 out of 5 eggsEsquisite little cooler. A+++

Pros: 1. fits entirely within the Intel safe area around the CPU. Does not interfer with the adjacent PCIe slot near the cpu socket in an ITX case, the cpu power socket or with nearby RAM.

2. Superb constuction. The cpu contact plate is absolutely flat and 100% polished smooth. Came with screws to enable a full size 92mm fan to be attached. I had room for the taller fan and appreciated their foresight.

3. Extremely quiet. Had a 4 pin header for the cpu fan header so fan speed could be controlled by cpu temp

4. low profile and quiet amakes it ideal for small HTPC

Cons: 1. Won't move as much air as a tower cooler or cool as well as a liquid cooler. But based on its construction and with the taller fan mild OC should be fine.

2. The cooler is held to the mb by 4 screws that come up from the bottom. I found that the heads of those screws to be unusually thick. They became the lowest point on the bottom of the board and in fact they supported the entire board. Thankfully they matched the height of the mb standoffs I used so that the board wasn't flexed as it was bolted down to the case. But I would make sure that this is the case before getting too far along with a mb install in the future.

Other Thoughts: Rarely have I ever seen anything so well made. It came with everything a person would need including their own heat sink compound.which was easier to spread in a thin layer than Artic Silver. Someone just set out to make a great product and succeeded 100%.

4 out of 5 eggsWas not compatible

Pros: nice packaging, comes with everything needed.

Cons: compatibility / see other thoughts

Other Thoughts: Check the website for compatibility before you purchase. A lot of the reviews for this cooler talk about how its low height and strict size dimensions mean it will fit most boards. They do not talk about the rear mounting plate, which goes flush against the board on the backside for mounting. If your board has chips in this area, this cooler will not work for you. Very sad, as it looks like a sweet unit.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Cooler

Pros: Extremely quiet.
Brought my temperature down significantly.
Got rid of the high winding sound my stock cooler would make.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: A lot better than I anticipated. It really quieted my computer in general. If I had cheap small fans as case fans I don't think I would of noticed a difference. Luckily replacing my old cooler with this one was the piece to my puzzle for quieting down the machine.

4 out of 5 eggsNot sufficient for AMD A10-5800k

Pros: This is a good cooler. Its very quiet, and quite capable, but it didnt work for my needs. See Other thoughts.

Cons: Rated for maximum 65 watt cpu. I was using this with a 100 watt cpu and it didnt meet my needs.

Other Thoughts: I would like to start off saying that I got this cooler to squeeze into a tiny case, and this is best in class for the ultra thin form.

I used this on the A10-5800k and it worked well over all. For web browsing, watching movies, hulu, nextflix, and listening to music it worked great. For gaming, it was was quickly overwhelmed, but still functional. It kept the CPU at 30-33c at idle, and about 66c at max load during hours long gaming sessions.

Technically 66c is within the heat specs for the a10 chip, but I prefer to keep it more in the 45-50c range at max load.

I have replaced this with a different cooler but this product is ultra quiet and very capable given its form and intended use. I just wouldn't recommend it for a 100w chip if you plan on anything other than basic computing.

4 out of 5 eggsNeat

Pros: Keeps out of the way of RAM, but full size sticks with large heat spreaders may be right up against one side, restricting airflow a small amount. Bought myself a set of low-profile sticks to help a bit.
Very quiet, normally (see cons)
Surprisingly cool considering how very small this HSF is. One of the smallest I've ever owned. Needed a cooler shorter than 80mm so the extra headroom is a nice bonus

Cons: Every so often when the speed ramps up, I noticed a loud clicking noise as if the fan was bouncing a close wire or something. Checked and nothing was near it, so I pressed on the fan and rotated it a bit. Seems the fan was hitting the heat sink just slightly, but pressing on it made it stop. For now...
Hugs so closely to the motherboard, heat doesn't seem to escape very well...
About half a teaspoon of a red fluid drained out from the fan after the first week of use. I'm assuming it was some kind of oil to keep it smooth and quiet.
It's a good thing I didn't have a video card installed yet, otherwise the underside of it would have been covered in the stuff!

Other Thoughts: Keeps my AMD APU A8-3870k cool enough, even for long gaming periods. Overclocking is a no-go however.
If you'd like an idea of how closely this sits to the RAM, I have it installed lengthwise on a ASROCK A75M-ITX FM1, and the edge sits right against where the RAM slot begins. Again, low-profile RAM or RAM without a heat spreader will fit fine.
