With superb performance, high compatibility and quiet operation, the Noctua NH-U12S is a critically acclaimed, award-winning CPU cooler great for overclockers and DIY professionals. It features single tower design with copper heatpipes, and class-leading NF-F12 FocusedFlow fan with PWM support for fully automatic speed control, assuring you peace of mind with quiet and efficient cooling. Its 45mm slim shape guarantees full compatibility with tall RAM modules, and 125mm width means the cooler won't protrude too much thus you can install VGA card on the first PCIe slot hassle-free. The included NT-H1 thermal grease is also professional grade with maximum heat conductivity and ease of application. Plus, the SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system is compatible with both AMD and Intel platforms, of previous, current and even future generation, making it a solid investment that can live on till your next two or three builds.

Award-Winning NH-U12 Series

General information

The NH-U12S is the latest version of Noctua’s award-winning NH-U12 coolers. First introduced in 2005, the NH-U series has become a standard choice for premium quality quiet CPU coolers and won more than 400 awards and recommendations from leading international hardware websites and magazines.

100% RAM Compatibility

General information

Thanks to its slim design with only 45mm fin depth, the NH-U12S will not overhang the RAM slots even with two fans installed. This gives the user full access to the memory modules on all current CPU sockets and guarantees 100% compatibility with tall heatspreaders or optional memory fans.( Some AMD mainboards violate the 96x114mm keep-out zone specified by AMD, so the NH-U12S can only be used with RAM modules of up to 40mm height on these boards.)

Classic 120mm Tower Size for Excellent Overall Compatibility

General information

Standing 158mm tall, the NH-U12S is short enough to fit most modern mid- or high-end tower cases. Measuring 125mm wide (including fan and fan clips), the cooler stays clear of the top PCIe slot on standard ATX or Micro-ATX motherboards, ensuring best compatibility with SLI and CrossFire setups.

NF-F12 120mm Focused Flow fan

General information

Recommended by more than 150 hardware publications and thousands of enthusiasts world-wide, the Noctua’s premium quality NF-F12 Focused Flow™ 120mm fan is renowned to combine superb static pressure, excellent heatsink performance and surprising quietness of operation.

PWM Support and Low-Noise Adaptor

General information

The NF-F12 120mm fan supplied with the NH-U12S supports PWM for convenient automatic speed control through the mainboard. In addition, the maximum fan speed can be reduced from 1500 to 1200rpm using the supplied Low-Noise Adaptor for even quieter operation.

Anti-vibration Pads and Fan-Clips for Second NF-F12 (Optional)

General information

For users who want to achieve even better performance by adding a second, optional NF-F12 fan to create a push/pull setup, the NH-U12S includes fan clips and an extra set of custom-designed anti-vibration pads that allow to off-set the rear fan by 5mm to improve acoustics in dual-fan mode.

SecuFirm2 Mounting System

General information

Noctua’s SecuFirm2 mounting systems have become synonymous with quality, safety and ease of use. Supporting Intel LGA115x (LGA1150, LGA1155, LGA1156), LGA2011 and AMD (AM3+, AM2+, FM1, FM2, FM2+), the SecuFirm2 mounting included with the NH-U12S guarantees perfect contact pressure and maximum convenience on all current sockets.

Compatibility with Past and Future Sockets

General information

Complying with the open SecuFirm standard, the NH-U12S can be made compatible with the older LGA1366 and LGA775 sockets using the optional NM-I3 mounting kit, which is provided by Noctua free of charge. If technically possible, Noctua will also provide upgrade kits for future sockets.

NT-H1 Thermal Compound

General information

Having received more than 100 awards and recommendations from hardware journalists around the world, Noctua’s NT-H1 is a proven professional grade TIM solution that provides minimum thermal resistance, excellent ease of use and outstanding reliability.

5 out of 5 eggsA+

Pros: Amazing quality, designed to fit with most of motherboards (Asus sabertooth rev.2 in this case) and ram (G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series) . The fan is pretty much silent and it keeps 8350 at 20C.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsbest there is

Pros: I am a huge Noctua fan, there are others that are as good don't get me wrong, but Noctua has been great for me over the years and I tend to be loyal to a company for as long as they keep doing the right thing

You might be wondering why I selected the 120 MM cooler in 2015 when everyone is using 140mm fans and the reason is that coolers have started to get too big and my current case would be too tight a fit.

The NH-U12s is only 148mm tall with the fan which give me plenty of clearance in my case, it also doesn't interfere with my ram and gives plenty of room for the top PCIe slot

The heatsink is packaged very well and comes with everything you need to install including extra hardware should you buy a 2nd fan.

It comes with very good Thermal compound so you do not need to go order some MX4.

Install was easy and the temps were great, the fans push a lot of air, have a great static pressure rating and are quiet.

Fans have rubber pads to reduce vibrations

Cons: Ugly, brown nuff said

Other Thoughts: Unless you really need better colors or your case is too small to fit this, it is the best 120mm cooler you will find.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Very easy install

-Cools cpu excellent for air cooling standards (on par/better than some entry level water coolers) even with 1 fan

-Relatively small form factor

-comes with a tube of quality thermal paste

-clearance for any size ram

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Hard to say the positives that hasn't already been said. I've owned a hyper 212 evo (probably closet competitor to this) and this certainly outperforms it in every way.

Install for me was a breeze. I'm using an 8320 that's overclocked, so I can't comment on the install for Intel chipsets, but seems like it would be easy as well. This cooler seems designed for overclocked processors or generally the hottest chips on the market and performs excellent.

I like the fact it comes with a tube of thermal paste that is higher grade, not some generic pre applied thermal compound that some coolers have. Plus the fact you could remount the cooler at a later date and use it again.

some people complain that it's large, but it's really not. Maybe if you're using an itx or mini itx, but for mid towers and full towers it's perfect.

It's also a plus that it has clearance for any height of ram, so you don't need low profile if you're going to populate the slots right next to the cooler

As I said before I have an 8320 that I overclocked (I ended up just using arctic mx 4 that I had before purchasing this, so I didn't end up using the noctua compound for long, but either works great) and my idles/not super intensive everyday use Temps have been between 17c and 25c, and i ran stress tests programs and the cpu has even hit 50

Overall seems like a great buy for an air cooler solution and better buy than entry level liquid cooling solutions

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent after 2 months

Pros: Installed on stock Intel i5-2500 in Antec Solo II case.

Ambient temps 27 C (81 F)

BIOS fan controls set to quietest possible mode. I don't like noise. Cooler fan max speed under 900 rpm.

Idle temps:

CPU 34, motherboard 44, drives 34 to 37

Stress tests temps:

Intel XTU: hottest core reaches 63

Prime 95 version hottest core reaches 67 on all 3 tests

Probably the best mounting system of any brand.

Does not overhang RAM slots.

Cons: Some would say cost, but you get a tube of Noctua's excellent thermal paste, a low noise adapter, and a spare set of fan mounting clips if you want to use a second fan in push pull mode.

I don't see any reason to use a second fan as all the review I've seen say it would reduce temps only 2 or 3 degrees.

Other Thoughts: One of the very best single tower air coolers out there.

Not extremely heavy and not as tall as some competing coolers at 158 mm. My Antec case specs say it will accept coolers up to 160 mm in height and I had no clearance issues.

So far, I see no need to use the low noise adapter. I can't hear the PC from a distance of 4 feet without it.

5 out of 5 eggsA Great CPU Cooler!

Pros: Installed onto my 1150 motherboard without any problems. I was using the stock Intel cooler that came with my i5 idle temps have gone down from 32c-35c to 26c-29c and load temps from 65c-70c down to 53c-56c with my new Noctua NH-U12S cpu cooler.

That is a significant difference and this is on the same day it was installed. The temps may even go down a bit more once the thermal paste has set.

A very good cooler.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsThe cooling king for socket 1150

Pros: It's a Noctua product
Excellent packaging
Includes mounts for two fans
Comes with the legendary NF-F12 fan
Large tube of quality thermal grease

Cons: Very large unit might not fit in smaller cases
Rubber shock mounts for fans are testy to install
Some would say it is expensive
Poop brown and vomit tan fan
Some would say the packaging is overkill

Other Thoughts: Noctua - the word means owl, a bird known for silent flight and flawless predation. Noctua lives up to its name with this fine CPU cooler. Although it is large, most modern cases with at least 160mm of clearance can accommodate this excellent product. Performance is second to none with only one fan installed. With two fans in push pull, this performs as well as most 240mm radiators with AIO solutions.

Installation is a no brainer. The instructions and mounting hardware are second to none. Once installed, the cooler sits firmly on the CPU. The ample tube of thermal grease provides enough for many instalations, and works as well as the overpriced third party products.

If you are building a mission critical socket 1150 system and need to cool with air rather than water, this cooler is without peer. The poop brown and vomit tan fans might not go with all color schemes, but when folks see them in your machine, they will immediately know you installed the best.
