4 out of 5 eggsGreat for an air cooler

Pros: Keeps the CPU cool
Compatible with all sockets
Quiet

Cons: This thing is a huge pain to install, but is normal for most air coolers on the market. I cut my hands several times trying to get the fans back on, which you have to remove to install.

Heavy and bulky, although this isn't a huge deal for me knowing this when I got it, it's still pretty large. My memory sits right against the fan, so anything with large fins on your memory won't work with this. Any lightweight motherboards are also not recommended, as this thing is a hefty 3+ lbs, and could easily bend lightweight boards.

Other Thoughts: Finally to the cooling results, while this CPU cooler does perform very well and even verges on performing on the same level as average water coolers, this does run a bit warmer than the Deepcool Captain series. This runs no risk of failing pumps nor leakage, which is an inherent risk when using water cooling. Deepcool sent this to me as a replacement for the Captain 120 after the pump failed, and while it does run warmer I'm fairly happy with the results.

5 out of 5 eggsAll is Good with Assassin II

Pros: I needed something to catch the eye & cool a SMP Open Build & this sucker fit the bill. Gargantuan! Love it! It not only cools it "chills". I am utilizing two of the Assassin II's on the ASUS Z10PE-D8 WS Dual Processor Mainboard.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: People who give this a bum-rap for size and difficult installation should have not purchased this finely crafted piece of PC HDWR. It's a work of art! I operate from a HighSpeed PC TECH Bench so my stuff does not hang from a Mainboard nor set sideways in a case. I had no problem installing the x2 Assassin II, in fact; all the pieces fit better than a jig-saw puzzle. The designer definitely did his homework for everything fits together smoothly.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Heat Sink- If you can get past installation

Pros: Installation was fairly easy, extremely quiet- almost perfectly silent. The heat sink is so efficient that it is cool to the touch. Very well constructed

Cons: The instructions included are very weak, and you may have to figure out how to install it yourself. It is very big, make sure you measure your case first, and a bit heavy. Removing the fans to re-position the wires is a pain

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Cooler yet Big and Bulky

Pros: Let me just start by saying WOW!, DeepCool was not joking around when they made this product. The Assassin II is one massive cooler (142x158x167mm), it can be a bit intimidating at first but don’t let that discourage you.
The Assassin II cooler packs some awesome cooling performance with its twin-tower heatsinks, 8 heatpipes and 1x 120mm fan and 1x 140mm fan each one with PWM functions that support longer lifetime & lower noise level. Both of the 120mm and 140mm fans are very quiet as well even when under high load.
Overall design of this cooler is defiantly geared toward gamers with its sleek and in your face designs. Looking at the cooler from the top you’ll notice that it looks almost like sharks teeth, yet again giving you the impression that this cooler means business.
DeepCool has some great CPU support for this was well. Selections include the Intel LGA2011-V3/LGA2011/1366/1150/1151/1155/1156/775 as well as the AMD FM2/FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2 CPUs.
Now onto the tests to see if all of these fancy features and bold designs could live up to what DeepCooler had marketed it for.
System Specs:
AMD SaberTooth 990FX R2.0
AMD FX-8350 Black Edition (8-Core)
16Gb Corsair Vengeance Pro
PNY GeForce GTX960
Before this test I was running the tried and true cooler with a Hyper 212 Evo with core temperatures running anywhere from high 50c to mid 60c on idle and high load.
Running the Assassin II I was seeing CPU temperatures around low 50c to Low 60c. So there was defiantly a difference running this cooler.
Over all this was a nice cooler that supports a wide variety of CPU types. Its massive heatsink and 140mm fan support really lets this cooler cool almost anything you can throw at it.

Cons: Now off hand this cooler was a little bit difficult to install and I did feel a little nervous that the weight of this cooler might put too much stress on my board. Another reviewer mentioned this but I would also like to see some kind of support brace for a long term machine.
You can install this cooler by yourself though I would advise having a second person as you do not want to drop the equivalent of a 5lb weight on your motherboard.
Low-profile memory is a must if you would like to be able to fill all the memory slots on your motherboard. I had to remove most of my corsair memory in order to properly fit this cooler on the board.
This isn’t a DeepCooler issue but why do most coolers have this draw back and why has it not been overcome yet?

Other Thoughts: This isn’t a con because if you buy this cooler you should know what you can install it in, but for an upgraded cooler option you might have to look into a new case which means more money. This cooler is really big and bulky but it gets the job done. Performance is spot on giving some liquid cooled options a run for their money.
Over all the Assassin II is a great cooler. Price for performance is just right, with its support for a wide variety of CPU types and bold design leaving this cooler something to be sought after.
Yes it is bulky but this cooler will cool almost anything you throw at it. I would recommend this product to some users that are looking for bold designs, in your face features, and yet still offering great cooling performance.
I am going to give this 4 eggs mainly because of its weight and slightly complex install process.
In the end though I am going to say good job DeepCool you guys made a great product and I am excited as always to see where you will go from here.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Cooler

Pros: Great Cooling Performance

Quiet

Great Build Quality

Looks Good

Easy to Install

Cons: Huge (but I can say that about all top tier coolers in this size category)

Heavy (yet again a common trait of coolers in this size category)

Depending on motherboard layout this will most likely cover all 4 DIMM banks of your motherboard. So if you ever upgrade ram or add more you will need to remove fan to get access to this.
Also RAM with very tall heatsinks will be an issue.

You need to install a back plate, yet again a common thing with large cpu coolers.

Other Thoughts: This is a review for DEEPCOOL Gamerstorm Assasin II CPU cooler.

The fan came undamaged and extremely well packaged. Like most high end coolers this is a large AIR cooler. (More Wide then Tall ---too accommodate the 2 fans)

The cooler itself is very sturdy and well constructed.

Installation was very easy, the included mounting brackets and instructions are very straight forward.

Once installed with my case closed I couldn't hear the cpu fan over the sound of my case fans.

This CPU cooler performs extremely well. It out performs my CM 212 EVO, as well my Noctua NH-U12S, and it also out performs my Deep Cool Lucifer cooler.

My test system used a 4790k Intel @ 4.6 GHZ

At idle speeds the difference in the coolers is hard to see. 1 degree Celsius separated them. Which can sometimes be accounted for thermal grease and how long it takes to set (i was swapping coolers a few times for each model sometimes one would lead or tie at idle.)

I'd attribute this to 2 things for idle temp differences...1) all coolers are respectable brands/makes and 2) Haswell chips aggressively go for low P-States at idle so heat is greatly reduced to where all the mentioned coolers can handle the heat output well.

It wasn't until i pushed the CPU to max load while gaming for an hour that the true differences in the coolers showed. On average this cooler at load beat my others CPU coolers by 3-4 degree Celsius at load. Which is roughly 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit. So a noticeable different.

Overall I am impressed with Deep Cool offering in this cooler. Its well built , very quiet, easy to install, and performs where it should at its price point. Its just a great product.

Just remember to get ram that doesn't have tall heat spreaders.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat cooler

Pros: Keeps my cpu cool, read a few reviews about it being so large and covering ram slots, I didnt have that issue, granted, its still huge.

Cons: The only con was mounting the sucker, to mount it to a 1151 cpu I had to take the fans off to get the final piece on and that just annoyed me but its subjective.

4 out of 5 eggsQuiet and beautiful

Pros: The DeepCool Assassin II is a new product in the very crowded space of high performance air coolers. The reason this section of the PC market is overflowing with products is that many consumers either do not have the requires fan mounting space to attach an all in one liquid cooler such as the Corsair H80 or they are looking for a lower price than a liquid soluton. The Assassin is a massive air cooler and because of its size it is able to cool just as well as competitor brands. For comparison I chose to compare the Assassin II with the Noctura NH-L12 because both are approximately the same size and found that both were able to cool an open air overclocked 4770k @ 4.0GHz with temperatures around ~56C for the Assassin and ~60C for the Noctura. Noctura, known for their silent fans, has differentiated their products with a brown/tan color scheme which many consumers find ugly whereas the Assassin fans match more consumer system colors. The thermal performance is very good but one would expect that given the size of such a cooler but the most important aspect of the assassin is that the fans were nearly silent which makes the assassin a direct competitor to the Noctura for those who don’t want to pick a liquid cooling system.

Cons: The assassin is huge and may prevent the installation of RAM with large heatsinks

Other Thoughts: Should you buy this product?

If you don’t have space for mounting a 120mm radiator AND dislike the color scheme of the Noctura fans:

Yes the Assassin II out performs the Noctura NH-L12 and even some liquid colling solutions, but its huge

If you have a small case:

No, the Assassin II is a massive cooler and a low profile solution is what you need, but remember the smaller the cooling fan the faster it will need to spin and this the lounder it will be

personally I prefer all in one liquid solutions but given a choice between the Assassin II and a Noctura for an air solution the Assassin is a more appealing solution

4 out of 5 eggsWhoa! Size matters....

Pros: - Big, tall, powerful = very good cooling!
- Looks amazing...maybe even a bit intimidating?
- Get in a p!$$!ng contest; just point to this bad boy and you win....
- Quiet.....as in under 25db running wide open at over 70cfm!
- Good fan design
- High quality FDB fans (can be oiled for longevity)
- Heat pipes up the wazoo (8)!
- Universal fit...this will cool anything you throw at it (yes, even overclocked AMDs running crazy voltage)
- Comes with a lot of goodies (case badge, decent thermal paste, fan hub, etc.) all a very nice touch
- Cools better than most AIO liquid coolers and cost less = impressive!

Cons: - Need low profile memory modules to install in traditional orientation
- Size may be an issue if you have a small case or limited space within the case (can be mounted facing different directions to accommodate)
- Very heavy! If I was leaving this in my rig long term, I'd like to see additional bracing that could be used with this massive HSF
- Installation can be a bit of a PITA vs other options on the market - read the directions and you should be fine
- Doesn't come with and can't use a 3rd fan (to be fair, not needed and if you reeeeally wanted a 3rd fan, you could rig something up to make it work)

Other Thoughts: My main rig is running a massive custom liquid loop cooling 2 overclocked 290X's and an Intel 2700K running 5ghz at 1.4V. The loop has 2 triple 120 rads and a single 120 rad = everything runs extremely cool year round. Keep in mind GPU(s) and CPU are all on the same loop however and those GPUs throw a ton of heat. When testing the HSF on it's own, it won't have the GPUs adding extra heat so it's not an example apples-apples but you'll get an idea of just how good this HSF is. The liquid loop has AC Ceramique thermal paste and the Assassin used the paste it came with.

Ambient room temp = 22C

60 minutes Idle temp:
Liquid = 30C (average across all cores)
Air = 28C (average)

Intel Burn test (careful if you run this - it cooks CPUs!) Run 10 times at standard:
Liquid= 72C (average across all cores)
Air = 79C (average)

10 seconds after end of burn test:
Liquid = 36C
Air = 45C

30 seconds after:
Liquid - 33C
Air = 32C

60 seconds after:
Liquid = 30C (back to standard idle temp)
Air = 31C

I was going to post numbers for gaming but it's not a fair comparison as the GPUs heat up the whole liquid loop. With that, this massive HSF from deepcool is pretty amazing! If you don't want to go with a custom liquid loop (which is waaay more than this HSF) you'd be very hard pressed to do better than this Assassin II from Deepcool. It is as good or BETTER than most all in one (AIO) units out now and cost less. You aren't going to fit this in a mini home theater PC like you could with an AIO but if you want this for overclocking a serious gaming rig, it'll do it with ease.

If this was easier to install and had better bracing/support, I'd have no problem giving this a solid 5. Overall great unit!

2 out of 5 eggsDEEPCOOL GamerStrom ASSASSIN II CPU Cooler

Pros: Before I begin my review on this product, let me set the record straight on something. NewEgg DOES NOT PAY their Eggxpert Reviewers ANY MONEY for a review (GOOD OR BAD - ON ANY PRODUCT)!!! When they 1st asked me to become a reviewer, they told me that I could post ANY TYPE of review that I wanted to, either GOOD OR BAD! The only thing that they asked me to do was to be honest in my review, which I try to be. Now that this is finished, let's start...

Let me warn you, THIS THING IS H-U-G-E!!! When I was 1st offered the opportunity to test this Cooler I sort of glanced at the Spec's and thought it said 2-120mm fans. It turns out this MONSTER has 2-140mm fans on it. It seems I'll have to pay more attention to the Spec's in the future. The company named this the "ASSASSIN II" when in actuality they should have called it "GODZILLA II". Just kidding...

I have to admit that installing this MONSTER on my MotherBoard was a challenge in more ways than one. My 8-Core (FX-8350) PC originally had a Cooler Master Hyper 101i Cooler on it and then I upgraded it over to a newer water cooled system (not sure of the brand or model) and finally to this unit. Once I finish testing this unit, I will reinstall the old water cooled system I had on it before. I have already moved the older Cooler Master Cooler over to a new 6-Core (AMD) 48TB Server I'm in the process of building. I don't know about you, but I try not to waste anything that is still useful. You would be surprised at the number of things I reuse again and again.

Now I do like the fact that this cooler has 2 fans and 8 Heat Pipes in each grill. I also like the fact they kindly included a 4-Port Fan Hub that works with PWM Support. The only problem here is that it only reports the speed of the fan with the WHITE COLOR PORT. I guess this is better than nothing. They also included fan clips for both 120mm and 140mm fans as well. Good.

The fans themselves are 2-140mm fans in a sort of a push/pull configuration where one fan pushes the air through the 1st grill while the other is in the middle of the 2nd grill. So it sort of looks like this: fan/grill/fan/grill. In all honesty I am not sure if this is the optimum setting for a 2-fan cooler, but personally I would think a push/pull configuration of the fans (at both ends) would make more sense. But then again I'm not an engineer, just a PC Tech. so I could be wrong on this. There are 2 cooling grills and each grill has 8 copper (cooling) pipes going through each grill (which is good). My old Hyper 101i Cooler only had 2 copper cooling pipes and 1 grill, although I did add a 2nd 80mm fan onto it.

There are many good choices as far as the CPU's it supports. It gives you a good selection including the Intel LGA2011-V3/LGA2011/1366/1150/1151/1155/1156/775 as well as the AMD FM2/FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2 CPU as well. I have the AMD CPU.

Cons: While not a CON per say, there is one thing I would warn everyone to consider before buying this cooler. Like I said before, this thing is H-U-G-E!!! In fact, it's so big a lot of users might not be able to fit this into their cases. The box it came in is about the size of a SMALL Coffee Maker! Yes, that's about how big it is! This is definitely one item that I would recommend that EVERY USER measure twice before buying, just to make sure it'll fit your case in the 1st place. I would hate to see anyone buy this, only to find out later that it's too big.

The second problem I have with this unit is that it is also VERY HEAVY (at roughly 3 1/4 lbs.) Now some people might question my logic for this, but if you have a flimsy MotherBoard and install this cooler with the MotherBoard turned on its side, it might overly stress the MotherBoard itself to the point of cracking either the board itself or even the copper circuit leads. This is something I would be VERY CAREFUL about. Also be aware that this is definitely NOT an item I would recommend that any one user alone install just because of the difficulty in installing it, but also because of its size AND weight as well.

I give this unit 2 EGGS mainly because of the fact that it'll probably require a new case and the fact that it's TOO BIG AND BULKY (even though it does look good) for many users. I cannot fault it on its performance as it's about ON PAR with other 2-Fan coolers I've tested.

Other Thoughts: Now how does this puppy perform??? I've had this unit installed now for about 2 days now and in all honesty I found this unit to be about ON PAR with other 2 fan coolers I've tested (at least within a couple of degrees anyway). I do have to admit that for the size of this puppy, it was remarkably quiet. Much more than I expected. I really expected to hear Godzilla's R-O-A-R!!!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Would I buy this unit for myself? Probably not for 3 main reasons.

1. Because it's SO BIG AND BULKY, it requires a specialty case that would allow it to fit. This means EXTRA COSTS.

2. Because of the size of this unit, you have to remove the 2nd (middle) fan in order to secure it on the CPU and then reinstall it. Plus to install it properly, it needs at least 2 people.

3. Mainly because of the fact that I now prefer a water cooled system (at least since I've started using them) over an air cooled one. But this is just a personal preference and other users might not agree with me on this.

Would I recommend this unit for my clients OR other users? I might, but then again a lot of users might question my recommendation if I did. They would probably take one look at the size of the case this cooler requires (just to fit) and then shake their heads in a sort of "No, No! It's MUCH TOO BIG!" fashion. Or they would say something like, "We were looking for something with a MUCH SMALLER footprint."

Let's face the cold hard facts here, today the more popular saying of, "Smaller is better" holds true with a lot of people and not just in the Business World but also in the PC World as well. So regretfully, I don't think it will fly. I believe if this cooler had been designed around the 120mm fan size, it might be a much better product with a larger following than I think it will have. As it stands now it's TOO BIG and TOO BULKY!!! Keep the nice packaging it comes in, but lose the size. Nice try guys - but better luck next time...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued reviewer,
Thanks for your careful reviews in such details, and yes, as a twin tower cooler, this cooler is indeed big, its overall dimession is 143X158X167mm, and it is 1.5kg.
