Get your sound on for less. Altec Lansing's VS3251 speaker system lets you get into the world of 5.1 audio speakers for a song. The small surround speakers are shielded so that you can mount them near your TV or monitor with no magnetic field problems.
The subwoofer and control unit uses standard bare wire terminals so that you can use standard speaker wire to lengthen the cables so you can place the satellites where you want them.

Good for the money
- Pros: -For a xx$ 5.1, i like it. It was better quality than i thought i was going to get.
-The remote is good, not used to no knobs on the speakers, but that eliminates knob problems as with other lansing products, and the remote works well, theres a little sattelite IR receiver that is placed on your desk.
-It can go very loud without distorting, the subwoofer is a rather conservitive one, not overly bassy, there are bass controls on the remote to make it as bassy as you want, which can get very bassy.
-Rear, center, and subwoofer volume controls on the remote so u can change each individually.
-Ster/surround mode button, 5.1 button, and aux button on the remot too which is good.
The Subwoofer has cabled that go to you souund card for each channel zone, front, rear, and subwoofer, which is a good thing
- Cons: -The subwoofer is NOT magentically shielded, i was disappointed in that.
-Theres a volume know to control overall volume on the subwoofer which i think is dumb, its a subwoofer, why would u bend over in a corner to chnage the volume u know? Unless u remove the remote which at that point u may as well ditch the whole system.
- Other Thoughts: - They need rubber feet for the bottom of the speakers, no grip on a desk really, i have a full frontal setup and it sounds just fine, my room doesnt permit a true surround sound style setup
-Magnetically shield the subwoofer, its not shielded, but u just need to keep it like 2 feet from ur monitor and tower, not so bad., the shielding would be a perk
For xx$ i think its a great value for a surround sound setup, its better than a 2 speaker setup, much clearer, its not you 300$ klipsh, but if you need new speakers, i would definitly reccomend this 5.1 setup for people who want 5.1 with little cost involved.
Haven't purchased, yet, but offering feedback to the original reviewer...
- Pros: Wireless remote is a huge plus, excellent price, based on previous experiences with Altec Lansing multimedia speakers I see no reason to doubt these, using standard speaker terminations makes it easy to "splice" more wire in for longer runs if need be, and a heatsink for the amplifier along with an auxiliary input.
- Cons: Single drivers in each satellite means frequency response from mids to highs may be a bit muddy as there's no dedicated tweeter/midrange drivers for true full-range sound but this is typical of many sub-100 dollar units.
- Other Thoughts: I normally wouldn't do this, but feel I MUST offer a rebutal to the original reviewer. I do not own this hardware but this feedback is strictly for those shopping around. 5.1 surround sound has NOTHING to do with whether the source outputs the signal in digital (optical/Toslink or coax aka S/PDIF) or analog to the amplification hardware (in this case, the sub which drives the satellites). 5.1 surround sound is strictly 5 separate channels of source audio encoded in the recording and a dedicated bass/subwoofer audio channel in the recording material (hence 5.1). THAT IS WHAT 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL SURROUND SOUND IS.
Inevitably, whether you channel that audio to the amplification through analog outputs like those found on the back of most motherboards (the mini-jacks), or through SPDIF/Toslink to a digital input on the amplification in your sound system, the end result is 5.1 channels of sound reproduced in ANALOG. Sorry to rant, but I didn't want anyone being mislead here.

Not that impressed
- Pros: The sound is decent, and it has a remote. Also very inexpensive.
- Cons: There are a lot of cons to this system. It takes a lot of messing around to get it to sound halfway decent. Overall I've had other speakers before that have had way better sound quality for not too much more money. The master volume is on the sub, but you need the remote to really change anything. The dial on the sub feels really cheap and it doesn't always work properly. Once again I'd like to state that the sound quality leaves something to be desired even with a nice sound card.
- Other Thoughts: When you first get them they are fine, but after hearing the same music played on other speakers and coming back to these it is disappointing.
Soggy bass
- Pros: Priced right, very compact.
- Cons: you have to turn them on every time you power up or leave them on. Bass is very muffled and soggy, no midrange and very little highs. I bought these for a better speaker system, but am very disappointed. I purchased my son a used AL set with a sub and 2 speakers, really old set and was very impressed with the sound, but these don't sound nearly that Great. You pays your dime and takes your chances. I won't buy another set without listening to them.
Not that great.
- Pros: Wireless remote?
- Cons: I'm not too happy with this system. The surround doesn't work that well for me and it just sounds really weak. I've tried two different sound cards and still the same quality.
I've owned cheaper systems without a sub that have sounded better. Maybe it's just my system or I'm just used to better speakers. This is a down grade for me since my 500W Altec Lansing from 2001 went out so I might just be picky. They sure did make better speakers back then.
- Other Thoughts: I also own the ALTEC LANSING VS2120 5 W 2.0 Speaker and I honestly think the sound quality on those are better even though there is no sub or surround. COD4 sure does sound better on the 2 speakers VS2120 than these.
