What exactly is this Snowflake all about?

The Snowflake has the performance of the Snowball but in a more compact package.

Is The Snowflake a dynamic microphone like the Blue Ball, or a condenser like the Blue 8Ball or Kiwi?

The Snowflake is a condenser, which, according to the audio wonks we know, has a smooth open sound with a nice, natural high-end.

I've heard that condenser microphones require something called phantom power. Do I need to concern myself with this? Does The Snowflake need batteries?

No. The Snowflake derives its operating voltage from something called bus voltage, which is always present on your USB port. The Snowflake does not require batteries.

Is the Snowflake compatible with Windows 7 and Vista?

Do I need any special software to use The Snowflake? Do I need any drivers?

Technically, no. Depending on your application, your OS may have sufficient features to utilize the capabilities of the Snowflake. But, to get the most out of your Snowflake, you'll want to have some kind of software that allows for digital signal processing and non-linear editing that will accept audio from the USB port. Some examples of these programs are listed below.

Can I use The Snowflake with a traditional analog audio mixer?

No. The Snowflake features digital output only. It must be connected to a USB port in order to function.

What sample rate and word length does the Snowflake use?

The Snowflake's digital output is set to 44.1 kHz / 16-bit, just like an audio CD. But this is something that only audio geeks really need to worry about.

How can I select a different sample rate?

Because the Snowflake is designed for the greatest ease of operation and setup, sample rate / word length are not user-definable. Sorry, geeks.

Can I use more than one Snowflake at a time?

Some audio editing software allows for multiple USB connections. Check with your software vendor-- they should have technical support staff who can answer all of your questions about their product.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible

Pros: Crystal clear recording.
Easy setup (as in, no setup. Plug it in and it works.)
Amazingly clear recording.
Portability/Small size
Super amazing crystal clear recording.
Able to hang from the top of my monitor without covering any of the screen.

Cons: Uses Mini USB rather than the more standard Micro USB
Cable slightly too short (I just used a longer one.

Other Thoughts: For the money, it's the best USB microphone in it's weight class.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Product

Pros: I ordered this as a beginner mic for commentaries. After uploading a few vids to youtube and compared it to my old 5 dollar headset one the difference is incredible.

Cons: USB wiring situation is a little weird but if you take off the white part it works fine so it has none i can think of.

Other Thoughts: Also if you want to upgrade to a higher end this a great on-the-go mic and a backup mic. I would absolutely recommend this mic for any needs if its from skype calling on the go to commentating for youtube.

3 out of 5 eggshad to reassemble it

Pros: nice sound quality, seems to be pretty sturdy

Cons: as another user mentioned, mine came non operational, but upon unscrewing it I was able to reconnect the two boards properly, and now everything works fine. was a real pain to get the pins in properly. poorly manufactured

Other Thoughts: the stand is pretty nice i think, the USB cable is the problem i think, i'm gonna try to get a little weight for the cable (and get a longer cable with a little bit of slack)

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little Mic

Pros: Great sound quality, relatively inexpensive, seems solid, plug and play, no software required. I like it!

Cons: The weighting of this mic is no good at all, If you open the mic off the stand it likes to tip over on itself. The USB cable included is very short.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away - far away

Pros: Makes a great paper weight.

Cons: They Never worked (returned first, got a second different unit, even that did not work).

It would not even show up on the USB device driver list (what USB devices are attached).

No test software, driver or any kind of

Other Thoughts: Purchased one - never worked - Returned for a replacement.

Even the replacement never worked. I tested the cable (worked fine). Tried other working USB cables. Tried several USB ports (that already worked for other USB devices).

When I called product support - No live person!!!

Had to leave a message and it took them 3 days to get back to me. The support tech didn't even walk me through a checkout process to verify if the unit was bad or it was me (operator error). He said 'just return it'.

All in all this unit took a ton of my time because its so simple (just a microphone) I figured it must be me.

When all is said and done the 'Snowflake' advertising is great - but the company behind it is the worst USA company I've seen in my life. I've seen third world companies with better support and better products than this company.

I ended up with a much cheaper Logitech microphone that worked right away - no problems.

My advice - stay away .... far away.

2 out of 5 eggsCan't get this to work so far

Pros: Feel solod, looks sharp

Cons: No driver, no tech supprt on Blue's website that I could locate.

Other Thoughts: So far I cannot get Vista or Windows 7 to recognize this microphone. Just says "un identified USB device". Have not been able to find a fix as of yet so I may end up returning this. I don't know if this is a Windows problem or a problem with the mic so a poor review may be unfair. I am having a friend with a Mac try it out to see if it's windows or the product. If anyone has any ideas...

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great voice quality. My friends can hear me clearly while using this device to play games.

Cons: Just got it and already it was not working. Had to open it up by unscrewing the Mic guard and had to put it together. Its made of 2 boards, one connected on top of the other.
Poorly manufactured.

Other Thoughts: I do like it other than the way it came.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Quality Mic

Pros: Great microphone. I only use it for screencasting and video/voice chatting but the quality is wonderful.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: not really a con but it is a little bit wobbly on the base when you have it on your desk depending on how its facing you.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Podcasting Mike

Pros: Sounds good, packs up nicely. Overall a great microphone for things like podcasting or voice recording.

Cons: Base is oddly weighted such that it has trouble standing up on its own weight. The base is also designed to be able to hang over your laptop screen (like a clip), but because of it's awkward size, it pushed into the LCD (bad) on my Mac and didn't fit on the PC laptop at all.

Other Thoughts: I wanted this for some quality voice recording since I didn't trust the recording quality of the sound card on this machine. I've been overall very pleased with the quality of the microphone, even though the laptop clip is a joke.
