1 out of 5 eggsDisapointing

Pros: It can scan documents when connected by USB to a Windows box.

Cons: After fully updating all software and firmware, can't connect to the unit with WIFI, even though it does get an IP from the router. Does not work with lubuntu. The documents I'm scanning are thinnish and there's quite a bit of bleed through in some areas. Pulls pages out of order from the sheet feeder.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Personal Scanner

Pros: Excellent budget document scanner. I find the scan quality to be very good. Typically I scan to a searchable PDF (OCR), and when I test-search various keywords, such as a name or number, it's always recognized.

It scans single sided, or both sides on a single pass. Very nice.

I've been using the wireless connection (vs. USB) and haven't had a bit of trouble. It goes to sleep with inactivity, but wakes up the moment you load a page.

Wireless scanning isn't very fast, however. If you do mostly single-sided, single page scans, it's great. But if you've got a large stack, it'll pause and process a few seconds between each page. I don't believe this is a Brother thing though - my Canon scanner performs the same way over wireless. If you're a heavy scanner, the USB connection would likely be faster.

There's numerous preset options in the included Brother software that can make common scanning tasks easy. It did take some time and experimentation to get things setup the way I like, so be patient and work through it. There's a lot of options.

I'm a fan of the PaperPort software (included), though I've been using it long before acquiring this scanner. **Note - it's packaged with a previous version of PaperPort, not the latest and greatest.** It allows you to organize your scans, manipulate PDFs, and create various scanning presets, all in one interface. Works great for my needs anyway.

I suppose you could run a photo through this scanner - it is a full color scanner after all. I have not attempted this however. I imagine it'd work in a pinch, but if you intend on scanning alot of photos and require high quality, a flatbed scanner would be ideal. This is a document scanner.

Overall I'm very please with this scanner, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for reading!

Cons: As I'm writing this, I cannot think of anything I don't like about it. It's been a great little scanner so far, and has met all of my expectations.

2 out of 5 eggsforget about Mac OSx

Pros: Papers scan through at a reasonable speed.
Two sided scanning.
Folds up compactly.

Cons: Does not work and play well with Mac OSx, although it is advertised as working with Mac. The apps that it has for Mac are clunky and tedious to use. The OCR for Mac is pretty much useless with about 50% accuracy.

Brother customer service was slow, and not helpful. They actually suggested that I try buying someone else's SW to make it work better! The only reason that I bought this unit is that it was advertised to work with OSx, and that really is not the case.

Now Newegg is trying to deny a refund.

Other Thoughts: Probably ok for Windows. Suprisingly heavy for it's size, must be sturdy or jam packed with hardware inside.
