Get marvelous color accuracy with HP’s ScanJet G4050. It has a 6 color, 96 bit color depth design and a 4800x9600dpi resolution. These combine to give you archival quality images. Included adapters let you scan up to 16 slides or 30 negative frames at once and then have the images stored as individual files.
The HP Real Life technologies software will bring old pictures, slides or negatives back to life. The software can handle scratch and dust removal as well as remove red-eye and enhance details. The Photosmart software also organizes your files for quick access.
Pros: Since I wrote the $200 paperweight review a couple of months ago HP has released the full driver/software apps for the G4050. The scanner is IMO pretty good. Normal picture and documents scans are good and very fast. HP's software suite is very adequate for most home users. Scanner is very flexible (quick simple copies or very detailed scans of 16 slides at once).
Cons: Not a lot of cons but if you want high quality scans you'll have to wait for them. If you use the 96bit scans at high DPI a set of 16 slides will take between 3-4 hours. Its definitely a set it and forget thing. Also, the auto-selection areas are frequently way off missing large chunks of photos or slides. You'll need to adjust each selection area by hand before accepting the preview.
Other Thoughts: I was very annoyed at HP for the way they touted its original Vista compatibility. However, I would say the scanner is worth the price if you need to do serious archiving of old photos, film, or slides. While there is nothing wrong with this scanner, if you need are more basic this scanner is overkill.

Pros: Excellent features, provided you are not using VISTA.
Cons: Does not work with VISTA! The installation disk and programs are NOT compatible with Vista. HP has a Driver on their site for very basic operation only. You can only get very basic scanning functions until HP provides updates in several months (per their support site). Unfortunately this doesn't work for me.

Pros: I have XP Pro with all the downloads. This was one of the smoother installs for me.
Long live XP PRO and Hp !!!
Cons: NONE.
Other Thoughts: Love Hp or hate Hp, they make REALLY nice scanners and printers ! Over the years I've owned quite a few ! I switched from an all-in-one scanner/printer/fax to this lovely, surprisingly intuitive, scanner. Maybe I've just had so many Hp products that they seem intuitive to me.
