The OpticFilm 7200 from plustek is an efficient way to digitize your 35mm negatives and slides. The compact scanner has a 7200x7200dpi resolution and 48bit color depth for incredibly accurate scans. Custom trays hold either 4 slides or one 6 frame negative strip.
A fast USB 2.0 interface transfers the data quickly to your PC. Since it only weighs in at 3 pounds it is extremely portable if you want to use it in multiple locations. A custom carry bag is included to make transport easier.
Pros: It does what it’s supposed to do right out of the box. I like it. Quality also seems quite good. I’ve only had it a week, but have to say I am really impressed with both its performance and capabilities. After spending a little time experimenting I feel Like I am generating a high quality archive of my 35mm color negs. I find the apparatus both flexible and versatile with ample latitude to play around. The hardware based dust and scratch removal works pretty well. Mask removal and color balance tools worked very well, lots of settings for fine tuning. Easy to get what you want. The bundled components work well enough to be able to spend your energy on the task and not waste time getting things to work. Tools for removing defects are pretty good. 3 types available, hardware based SRD, save presets of the settings that you find work best. Also software based tools (auto and manual). Manual approach allows for more control but can be very time consuming. The automated features work well.
Cons: Not really any significant cons. I did run into a wierd loop installing the silverfast software. Had trouble dowloading the manual, but I think that is more an adobe problem. The quicktime tutorials downloaded and work as a standalone. Their own selfinstaller from the webste. They don't seem to link up with the main program help tabs. I have to go and open them seperately. This doesn't seem to important to me now because I was able to figure out most of what I wanted by experimenting with the features and that prove to be both a productive and fun way to learn-better than reading a manual.
Other Thoughts: This is the only system like I've tried, so I can't make a comparison to another product. At this point I am very satisfied with the performance. Note: the reality is that good quality negs can make good quality scans. You can fix quite a lot, re-orient, re-crop, retouch and even sophisticated things like bring out definition that was obscured by shadow in the original print, but you can't fix things like bad focuss from the original. Also, I have learned that negatives are very delicate and at this resolution you pick up every detail and also every defect so be careful not to add defects during handling. Practice on the less precious stuff before you start on your more cherished irreplaceable stuff.

Pros: Works as promised... and better than expected. Just took a bit of experimenting with settings but I'm scanning old slides and negatives with success. I only use the Photoshop plug-in which adds an import filter that starts the scanning. It's very easy to use and if you can't figure out an interface, click the Quicktime icon to watch a video.
Cons: You may not enjoy this if you don't have decent processing software (eg: Photoshop). I did not install or test the bundled apps. Don't expect the dust remover features to get rid of all dust, I had to use Photoshop CS3's healing brush (excellent!) on my less protected slides (sleeves are better than boxes) and some of my grimy old slides are going to need a good washing before I scan them, canned air isn't sufficient to remove oils. The PS plug-in scan to HDR will scan a negative to a negative (which can be inverted in Photoshop). The "HDR" scan is 16 bits per color, not the 32 bits PS prefers.
Other Thoughts: Received this early and really appreciate Newegg's inventory management and customer service, it was in stock as promised and shipped quickly.

Pros: Unexpected quality. Compact size. Quick scan is your friend if you are archiving/catalogging. Free and quick shipping. Free wireless router (odd thing to be packaged with). SilverFast is good at what it does (See cons).
Cons: Setup for this software is complex. Not your usual work flow for software install. Silverfast is hard to get used to. They mention a photoshop plugin, but it's hard to use, if it works. (see other thoughts).
Other Thoughts: If you use this with Windows 7 - Be sure to get the latest driver off the plustek website. There are 2 versions of the latest driver. I'd hazzard a guess to say that all the model versions coming out are 5A15's from now on. Know that and get the right version. When you install the driver, install as version compatibility 'Windows Vista'. The raw install will fail, if it doesn't it will still not work. So that should save you 1.5 hours of grief. Silverfast is odd but good software. Install from disk - add software key, then upgrade from the Silverfast's website. You 'must' get a negative cloth. I tried a few but the one that works the best is '3M Microfiber Lens Cleaning Cloth'. That's not an AD. I tried others and they are not created equal. The one I tried before that left so many fibers on it the scan. It was a wreck. If you do not use a cloth, you will have a LOT of work on your hands. The 3M cloth - Not a speck on the Neg. Canned air won't work - just an FYI.

Pros: Simple, straight forward, plug in and it works, I have scanned almost 200 slides/negatives and it shows all details
Cons: Most negatives are 4 to a strip, adapter should be make as 4 or 8, plus hold negatives better. Free version of software won't clean up lint/dust programatically.
Other Thoughts: software tad cryptic, but easy to use

Decent Scanner, Bad Software

Pros: For the average home user, it works fine. I bought it to save money on prints, and for my uses it's good. Picture quality is fine for color photos, and very good for black and white.
Cons: If you're going to buy this, invest in different scanning software. Other people have said it, but it's worth restating. Scanning color photos using Silverfast is an abysmal experience. Regardless of how much time I spent tweaking this I could not get the photos to look right. I got Vue Scan which has support for this device and works great out of the box. Without any tweaking color scans looked good.
The film loader is a little bit of a hassle to work with. Film curls up, so it's a little tricky to get into the loader. Also, would have been much better if there was an autoloading feature, but thats a minor complaint.
Other Thoughts: All in all, it's good for my uses. Im not a professional, just a hobbyist looking to save a few bucks.
