New Egg Great - Scanner OK - Software Uck!

white Reviewed By: Pat Ampulla on 1/9/2007
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat low - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: First of all, New Egg promptly handled a return and replacement (athough they called it a "repair").

Secondly, the scanner does a nice job of 12 mounted 35mm slides at a time. It also handles photographs nicely. Magazines are awkward because the scanning table is recessed.

Thirdly, it comes with quite a few film holders (four 8 3/4" 35mm strips, 12 mounted 35mm slides and 2 8 3/4" medium format strips).

Fourthly, the scanning side is hermetically sealed do dust can't get in -- or out, so check very carefully when you get your scanner.

Fifthly, the USB and Firewire connections are handy.
Cons: The first scanner arrived with a white speck under the scanning window. New Egg promptly replaced it.

The biggest design flaw is that the scanning table is recessed. It takes an act of Congress to clean the table because of this. Epson should have made the glass flush or raised above the housing for easy cleaning. A big negative!

A minor design flaw is that there are two transport locks. If either is not unlatched the software reports a communication error.

Which brings me to the wounded Windoze XP software. It installs just where it wants to. It does the bare minimum to clean up dust spots and dissect or rotate images. The red-eye correction is a fuzzy, fixed diameter, dark spot that centers where you click -- not very useful. Not up to Photoshop's reputation and very off-putting.

New Egg, for all its virtues, ships the doggone thing in the retail box which opened in transit! Packing costs money that you and I have to pay, but a simple strip of tape is cheap.
Other Thoughts: Dust is a big problem when scanning. The recessed scanning table is a huge handicap. The idiosyncratic software supplied does the bare minimum. Figure on buying your own image processing software.

In a race with evolution Epson technical support gets even odds. When they say they respond to email in about a business day they mean they take at least 24 hours (no weekends or evenings). But, the responses were thoughtful and not regurgitated from the manual PDF.

The scanner makes a beautiful image and the Firewire interface is fast.

Rock Solid Scanner for Photo's

white Reviewed By: Blackdog on 12/5/2006

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Where to start - easy to set up, easy to scan incredibly high photos/negatives, decent software for tweaking (but you will likely want to upgrade), super fast and quiet. Go to for an exceptional in depth review of this scanner and step by step comparison amongst the top ones on the market - it is a great resource.
Cons: Bigger than I expected and it does take up some room. The door slams shut if it is not 3/4+ open but not a huge deal
Other Thoughts: Read the review i posted as they do an exceptional job comparing every single aspect of this scanner to the 750, Cannon and Nikon competitors - short version is this is the best on the amrket for the money. be prepared to shell out some extra $s for upgraded software.

Great scans in spite of poor manufacturing

white Reviewed By: Jerbear72 on 9/3/2009
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: TWO primary options included for software interface (Epson Scan and Silverfast SE). Quality of scans (at least with 35mm slides and rescan of prints).
Cons: Specs found under glass on main unit - having to arrange around them until RMA is honored. Support for Vista 64 for Silverfast SE not out of the box - requires additional registration and download of latest.
Other Thoughts: I bought this after having used its predecessor (Perfection 4990) to scan 300-400 odd sized 50-60 year old negs from grandpa's old camera - with excellent results. However, the disappointment of having dust UNDER the glass has come true. We will see how Newegg responds.

disingenuous service

white Reviewed By: shopping elsewhere on 2/9/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: less than 1 day
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: competitive prices, customer service does usually respond eventually
Cons: unprofessional customer service responses, delayed responses which cause further delays in resolving problems with an order. strong evidence of shipping known defective merchandise
Other Thoughts: after receiving the scanner i noticed it had the same large white dust specks on the underside of the glass, which is unreachable by user, as was described in a recent online review of newegg. after getting an rma number i received no response from customer service for 3 days as to return shipping payment, causing me to have to pay to send it myself. although they ultimately agreed to reimburse me (yet to be seen) it caused a long delay further lengthened by the unexpected 3-5 day rma time they take just to process replacement orders. customer service responses were formulaic and evasive. should have simply returned it and ordered from someone else, would have a working scanner by now rather than being forced to cancel the order rather than wait 3 weeks for a hopefully working item. that, on top of user reviews of disturbing credit card mishandling makes me advise being suspicious of newegg

True Pro Grade Scans

white Reviewed By: snlpop2 on 1/7/2009
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Best scans I've seen from a flatbed scanner. No blown-out highlights, plenty of contrast in darker areas of image. One of the few scanners with sufficient contrast resolution for 48 bit output to truly be useful. Once the lamp warms up, scans are fast, even at higher resolutions.
Cons: Bundled software leaves a lot to be desired. SilverFast SE crashes Photoshop CS4, and is so crippled in functionality that it is pointless, providing no benefit over the Epson driver. I ended up uninstalling Silverfast and just use the Epson driver, which works fine but is limited in functionality.
Other Thoughts: I seriously considered the V500 scanner instead. It is a lot cheaper and uses LEDs, so there is no lamp warm-up time. While the V500 is probably the lowest noise "consumer-grade" scanner, the "semi-pro" V700 is significantly lower, giving better contrast resolution and less noisy "dark" areas. I just wish it used LEDs.
