1 out of 5 eggsEpson should be embarrassed

Pros: Seems solidly built - it's heavy enough!
I have no qualms about the construction of it, it should last a good long time.

Cons: Abysmal speed, especially on a Mac.

Epson rates it 40 ppm B&W-200 dpi. It actually did scan 40 ppm for a while when scanning B&W 200 dpi, but after about 100 sheets, it would scan 5 sheets, then pause for a count of 2, then another 5 & another pause. After another 50 sheets or so, it would only scan 4 sheets before pausing for the count of 2, then about 30 later it would only scan 3 sheets before its pause of 2.

Next, I tried greyscale at 200 dpi. Initial speed dropped to about 30 ppm.

Next test was color at 300 dpi. Speed was about 20 ppm. This is completely unacceptable.

Next, I tried my Mac Pro (quad core 2.66, 10 GB RAM). At B&W 200 dpi, speed seemed ok, about 40 ppm. Within 20 pages, it slowed to 1 page, then a progress-bar window came up that showed the page being processed, then the next page, and again the progress-bar. Speed was less than 20 ppm.

Other Thoughts: Epson should be embarrassed to rate this as they do. If they still want to sell it, they should either fix it so it DOES scan as fast as they say (continuously, not just short bursts), or downrate it appropriately, and drop the price to half. That would be worth the money, at least on Windows.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome scanner

Pros: Extremely fast and simple. Software is very versatile allowing for many different profiles to be setup for specific types of jobs. Double-sided scanning really speeds up process. We scan insurance documents and patient medical records. In five months we have scanned over 6,000 documents. Typically can scan 700-1,000 pages in about 45 mins. Document resolution is very good. Document orientation (skewness) is seldom a problem. Auto-skew fix and three-hole removal features work well. Double sided scanning works exceedingly well. Because the scanner can scan so fast, I tend to let scanning work stack up before doing it. This means i can turn the scanner off for a week or so at a time, saving energy and wear and tear and potential for power spike damage.

Cons: Have had very sporadic "multi-page misfeeds" however it is usually because of crinkled paper, super glossy paper or some other paper issue.

Other Thoughts: Catch tray could be slightly longer with a better paper stop to keep the papers in the tray and off the floor. When scanning 100 pages at a time, it tends to overflow the output tray and pages end up being scattered.

5 out of 5 eggsEats through documents like a barracuda

Pros: I have never seen a scanner go through documents as fast as this. When you press the scan button it starts scanning. There is no warm up time. I do not know if the ultrasonic double feed woks or not, I just know that I have not had one jam or scan more than one page while owning this (little over a week) . . . there is one problem with it though. You can replace the scanner wheel.

Cons: It only has one scan wheel, or it may be the ultrasonic scan double feed protection. The problem that this creates is if you have a “carbon copy” page this will tear it to shreds. There is a clear sleeve included with the scanner for such documents. You can also order more from Epson.

Other Thoughts: Over all I highly recommend this scanner, it’s probably the best out on the market right now. Additionally, check out Epson’s web page to see if they are offering additional mail-in rebates.
