An advanced flatbed scanner for demanding photo-and-film tasks, Epson's Perfection 4490 Photo features a transparency unit with a moving light source that scans up to twelve 35mm negatives or four 35mm slides simultaneously. Epson used its Color MatrixCCD (Charge-Coupled Device) sensor to deliver scans with resolutions up to a 4,800dpi resolution and 48-bit color depth, giving you precise color and detail, whether scanning slides, negatives, or photos.
With Epson's Digital ICE Technologies you can easily remove dust and scratches from film, and many types of surface defects from prints, minimizing costly retouching. And, with the convenient film holders included, you can even batch scan multiple slides and negatives to increase productivity.
The unit features a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connector for hooking into your computer. A full software suite is included featuring Adobe Photoshop Elements, ABBYY FineReader Sprint Plus OCR, Epson Copy Utility, and Epson Scan with Epson Easy Photo Fix Technology, FineReader Sprint Plus and NewSoft "Presto" Biz Card.
Pros: The scanner produces excellent results. The Epson scan software puts a minimum of startup programs (a.k.a. spyware) on your computer. The software registration is optional. The scanner is easy to pysically set up, just remove a few pieces of tape and plug it in to the wall and the computer. The scanning is impressively fast, at a resolution of 2400 I was able to scan photographs in a very reasonable time.
Cons: The software will crash with certain settings. This is not just on my machine, but on 3 machines in the lab. Epson's website provides some upgrades, but they have not totally cured the software lockup problem. We have tried 3 different patches to no avail. We just avoid certain settings. In the case of my scanner the glass is not secured to the top of the scan bed and falls into the scanner (this is a known problem) There can be 'communication issues' between the printer and the computer. This is usually manifest by windows 'redetecting' new hardware even after the scanner was already installed. Epson can assist you in resolving this, but this is no trivial task. The software also forgets to tell you that you have to reboot after initial install. This is all bush league stuff and I hope Epson gets its act together, because this product has potential from a price standpoint.
Other Thoughts: For the quality scans this is a great price. For the headache of having to deal with a poor website, drivers and poor hardware design (glass), it may not be worth it for some. You can return it to newegg if the glass has fallen due to a combination of poor design and shipping, or call Epson. I decided just to fix it myself. This may not be an option for you. When working the scanner does a good job. I am keeping mine to avoid restocking fees and shipping charges.

Fantastic Scanner for Old Photos
Reviewed By: Tony B. on 12/4/2005
Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Color Restaration of OLD Photos Quick Scans (about a minute per photo). Noise is not a problem, old UMax Scanner made much more noise.
Cons: Haven't found any yet on the scanner. UPS delivery is 2 days slower than the FedEx.
Other Thoughts: Bought scanner to replace an old UMAX scanner. This one is fantistic. I installed it and within 1 hour I scanned 20 old faded 1960's photos that came out beautiful, just like new. It used to take me 8 hours per photo to attempt to restore color that I never got right. This alone makes it worth the price. Now to scanning 2 tubs of old family photos.

Pros: This is the best consumer scanner I have used at this price point. The image quality is very good for full sized scans (like scanning old photographic prints or documents) and the color is quite accurate if you are careful with your settings.
Scans of 35mm color negatives are capable of producing very good prints up to 8 X 10, which is my personal benchmark for a consumer device. The digital ICE does indeed do a good job (not perfect) of removing dust spots from film scans, but obviously ICE doesn't work with B&W film.
The medium format film holders are a plus, but I doubt that anyone seriously scanning medium or large format film would be happy with this scanner for film. Ironically, this scanner would be ideal for 4X5 film!
Cons: There are no cons for regular flatbed scanning if you don't need a document feeder, but there are three distinct problems with film scanning:
1) The film holders do not hold the film flat. For negatives kept rolled or that have curled over time, there are distinct in and out of focus areas of scans. Mounted slides seem to be less prone to these issues, but that is no guarantee.
2) There is no focus fine tuning. Since the film is not held directly against the glass, this creates a distinct problem! The gap between the film and focus plane makes it difficult to take full advantage of the resolution of this scanner.
3) The dynamic range leaves something to be desired when scanning high contrast, saturated slide film (Velvia being the specific reference point here) and I can't pull all of the detail out of the blacks that I would like.
Since this isn't pro-model film scanner, I don't expect any of these features on the 4490, but they are the limitations of the scann
Other Thoughts: This is an excellent consumer scanner for someone who wants exceptional flatbed scans and very good film scans at a good price.
If you need exceptional film scanning, I would recommend the V750 with its fantastic film mounting system.

Dandy!

Pros: Excellent image quality, particularly color quality. Epson's software is easy and simple to use, even in advanced mode - stand-alone or called from Photoshop. Speed is good factoring quality of resulting image and price of the unit. I've never had a 30 minute scan; I believe that may be more a function of what else is on your USB/speed. Back-light in lid and slide/negative caddy are great includes. Construction is sturdy for it's price range (it has been the bottom item in stacks of books, and been moved from room to room with no trouble). Hardware/software setup was straight-forward and easy.
Cons: It is definitely not a "backpack" scanner and will own some real-estate on your desk. The underscan/oversized glass noted by other reviewers is an annoyance which does require adjustment to your placement technique. When accessed thru Photoshop, scanning software completes the requested scan then quits; the plug-in must be launched for each scan.
I've used software from other companies: except for using a separate 3rd party software with a hefty price tag, the Epson software works great compared to what is provided by other companies. The above rants are minor annoyances.
Other Thoughts: Owned this since March 2008. Used on PC (Win XP), Powerbook Pro (10.4), and iMac (G4 700, 10.4). I've hauled the scanner from room to room and have never had "transportation issues"... until I moved last month and someone let it fall out of their car. Nothing appears broken from where it smacked the sidewalk, but I've yet to get it hooked back up and test it.
In any case, this scanner will be my baseline for "re-shopping" if I have to replace it. I would have no qualms buying another one if that's where the research leads me.

Lies about Vista64 support
Reviewed By: Mike on 2/6/2009
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Works great on XP.
Cons: Claims to have Vista64 support. Neither the included CD driver nor the driver downloaded from Epson work. Epson has failed to produce an updated driver in the time this scanner has been put out, and instead blames Microsoft even though the Vista32 driver works and other scanners work with Vista64.
Other Thoughts: Is this really a company you want to give your business to? Lying about product support, and failure to release new drivers? I've been working on computers for 12 years. I've even used SCSI scanners. I'm willing to bet those 10 year old scanners would still work, too. That's far better than this worthless thing.
