Get scanning quickly with the CanoScan 8800F. The white LED light source has no warm up time, and since it's an LED it is cool and energy efficient. Coupled with its high speed USB 2.0 interface, your scan jobs will be handled quickly so you have minimal down time. But the speed isn't enhanced at the expense of quality, the 4800x9600 resolution with 48-bit color makes for exceptional image quality.
The 8800F is a great choice for scanning filmstrips and has guides for the most popular formats included. A lighted lid ensures accurate scanning. One of the 7 EZ-buttons on the lid is for photos and film, so working with family pictures is as easy as scanning to PDF.
Once you have the images scanned in you can make them look as good as new with the Auto-Image Fix feature in the included Easy PhotoPrint EX software. FARE 3.0 technology makes retouching your images a breeze. Let your memories live forever with Canon and the 8800F.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Reasonable cost, easy to use software, Fast scanning
Cons: Images are placed in the corner (upper right) of the scanner furthest from where I would have liked them to be placed- lower left or right. Does not come with calibration targets (like those for Silverfast IT8).
Other Thoughts: I have been researching scanners for a while and decided on this one because of the many comments about the speed and quality of the scans. It scanned an 8x10 photograph at 600dpi in 18secs and the quality was excellent. I purchased it mainly for scanning photos and don't know yet how it works with slides. I was considering the Microtek I800pro scanner namely because of the software that comes with it, but that can be purchased by itself if needed. Compared to my previous Microtek scanmaker 4800, which still works fine but is slow, this thing is blazing fast. It installed in my XP machine very easily, and the software seems pretty decent for packaged software. While the resolution of the scan I made was outstanding, the color/brightness of the scan was a little off from what my monitor showed (which is calibrated using the Photocal spyder system)- there are some provisions to match the two more closely within the Canon software, by I have yet to play with it. All in all, a good choice

Best bang for the buck

Pros: I searched for quite some time before buying this scanner. I looked at very high end products such as the Nikon film scanners. I don't think the Canon can be beat at it's price point. With my computer (2.4Ghz, 2 Gig RAM), I can scan four 35mm slides at 4,800 dpi in 6 minutes. Not bad at all. The quality of the scan is impressive.
Cons: At super high resolution, all defects in the film show in a very obvious way. Not the scanner's fault but something to be aware of. Most defects can be fixed with software.

Pros: - Like the others, did my research before buying. I'm archiving 1000's of family photos and wanted a high quality scanner with an emphasis on speed. Took the plunge on this guy and could not be happier. - FAST! I can scan 4 pics at a time, each saves separately, and the time it takes me to remove the scanned pics and replace with 4 more, it's done processing the previous four and ready again. - The button programming on front helps to make it simple and quick. Program the button for photo quality, picture type (jpeg), and location to save and your off. - Using it with Win7 64bit with no issue so make sure you get the latest drivers from the website.
Cons: Comes with ArcSoft photo editing. I like Photoshop elements so I'm using that.
Other Thoughts: I found that a micro fiber cloth works great to keep dust to a minimum on the plenum.
Just get it!

Cons: None that I can think of.
Other Thoughts: I bought this scanner to help my parents digitize their slides. It has done the job perfectly so far. I have scanned about 100 slides without any problems.

Good Scanner

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Bought the scanner to archive and store old 35mm prints... it works very quickly on the resolutions needed to produce good results.
Cons: The scanning software is awkward, and make repetitive scanning a bit tedious as the software opens the scanned file every time a scan is made.
