5 out of 5 eggsLiDE 200 Series, 1 year on

Pros: Lightweight and portable with decent quality scans.
Has held up to a lot of traveling, just remember to lock it at the bottom prior to packing.
Draws it's energy from a USB 2.0 port and works off my laptop and desktop without issue.

Cons: The software has taken a bit of getting used to from a previous version of the scanner's.
Probably won't be powered off a netbook's USB port, you would have to research this before bying.

Other Thoughts: Good enough for the road, good enough for the kind of business I do when traveling; Documents scanning for record preservation of standard paper sizes.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Scanner

Pros: A huge perk to this scanner is it does not require an external power source: the data and power is utilized through a single USB cable. Comes with a stand. The stand props it up on its side...its about 15-20 degrees shy of a right angle, allowing enough of a lean to be stable. Since I don't use the scanner on a daily basis, this allows me to tuck it away so I can reclaim desk space as needed.

Cons: Bundled software isn't great by any stretch of the imagination, but it does work on Windows 7 pro 64 bit. There is even a little piece of paper included telling you how to ensure it installs properly on Windows 7/Vista. The software interface is a bit confusing and clunky, but I'm able to manage just fine. Nothing worth docking an egg over for me, since I'm not a heavy user.

Other Thoughts: Scans fairly quickly, roughly 10 seconds or less a page. I'd imagine it would be longer for a higher dpi setting, but the quality on the default setting is more than sufficient for my purposes, and I'm very happy with this product overall.

4 out of 5 eggsgood scanner unless ur on win 7

Pros: Scanner itself works great. We were on WinXP when we started using this and it served us well for the price.

Cons: Recently upgraded to Win7 - not supported by the scanner software.

Other Thoughts: Ended up using 3rd party software. If anything, it's an improvement over the original software.

5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive, compact and effective

Pros: Very affordable

Excellent scan speed for a compact flatbed scanner

Very good scan results

Adequate software (it really hasn't changed much from my the software that came with my 5 year old canon N1220u scanner, but is much faster). The scan speed is very good and after an initial calibration can take as little as 5-6 seconds.

Power from USB port

Cons: Somewhat poor text scanning. Works better just to leave it on color/auto at 300+DPI.

Other Thoughts: These inexpensive little Canon flatbeds are much better than the ones in an all-in-one printer (to my eval) and will do thicker media such as books. Compact enough to sit next to your monitor and always ready.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat scanner for the quality and price

Pros: Works as it should. Have had ZERO problems in the 2 years I've owned it.

Cons: Yes the software bundled with it sucks. I tolerate it because I mainly use the scanner for documents and very infrequent photo scanning.

Other Thoughts: I don't have much desk space and since I only use the scanner 1-2X a month, I usually keep it bagged in the original plastic bag it came in on a shelf under my computer desk. Compared to scanners of decades ago, having just a single connection via USB for power and data is perfect for this infrequent use.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, if not a little quirky

Pros: Good bang for the buck. USB-powered so there's no obnoxious adapter hogging 3 plugs on my power strip! Takes up less desk space than my comparable Epson with the same platter size. Integrates well with my third-party photo management software so I don't have to use the relatively annoying software that comes bundled with the scanner.

Cons: Software is obnoxious. Maybe I should take off more "eggs" for that, but the fact is that I've never seen good software packaged with a scanner from ANY manufacturer. It might be a global conspiracy to lull us into a sense of contentment with mediocre software (LOL). The most annoying thing is that the "multicrop" feature is WORTHLESS. Instead of scanning the platter once and cropping out all the images (i.e., photos) available, it actually performs ONE SCAN PER CROP BOUNDARY! In other words, if you place 3 photos on the platter and set up the cropping boundaries, it will still make 3 scanning passes. What's the point? Might as well just scan each photo individually and not bother with the multicrop feature. It doesn't save you any time.

Other Thoughts: Another reviewer wrote that it scans all the images upside down. That depends on your perspective. If you open the lid away from you, then yes that's right. If position the scanner the long way so that you're opening the lid like a book, then there's nothing wrong with the scanning orientation. Another reviewer wrote that it scans the grains in the paper better than the text of the document. This is somewhat true. The scanning lamp is very powerful. When I scan my bills, for instance, it will pick up text from the other side of the page. However, I have found the auto-contrast feature does a fine job of removing the text that isn't supposed to be there. Photos scan just fine, except for my dissatisfaction with "multicrop" as explained in the "cons" section of this review.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Linux support

Pros: USB powered, LED scan bulb( doesn't lose color over time )

Cons: Canon has no intention of providing documentation for linux support. This scanner is not compatible with SANE.

Other Thoughts: Older CanoScan LiDE scanners do have SANE support, and work great.

5 out of 5 eggsFast

Pros: Replaced my LiDE 50. This thing will scan a high quality pdf (300) faster than I can load the paper in it. It comes with a vertical stand so it takes up less space.

Cons: None.
