4 out of 5 eggsGreat Value

Pros: Price! Looks brand new. Worked out of the box with drivers and software suite on the cd that came with the unit. Scans look very very good. FAST, even on a 1.8 ghz P4 (albeit with a usb 2.0 addin card). Lots of scanning options. Front panel buttons, 3 are customizable. Scan settings are customizable, or you can just use the defaults. Can save images in a variety of formats. Images can be saved to network shares via host pc mapped drives.

Cons: As others have is smudged on the underside of the glass. Again, doesn't seem to show up in scans though. No network sharing feature! (Yes yes, pie in the sky for $60, I know).

Other Thoughts: I was having trouble with the front panel buttons not initiating a scan sometimes. This issue seems to have been solved by simply opening the lid of the scanner.

I had been scanning the same document over and over using various settings to test image results and after pressing one of the front panel buttons after all that testing, the scanner "thought" the lid had not been opened and thus no document needed to be scanned. After I opened and closed the lid the Scan software popped up and started the scan.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Buy

Pros: I figured it out, but I'll admit I'm not very familiar how to use a scanner so it took me a couple hours of playing with it to get what I want.

Cons: It seemed to have 5 different kinds of software that would create PDF's which was what I got it for. However, one allencompassing program would have made this much easier. I'm wondering if I should have just went with the LED version which was the same price and needs no power cord.

Other Thoughts: Once I got the hang of it I could make very large multipage PDFs from scanned documents which is what I got it for. Wether there are better scanners out there for this purpose is probable, but the price was right.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes What I Need It To

Pros: Fast scanner produces quality results in both color and grayscale. Buttons are convenient (once you figure out the CanoScan Toolbox).

Cons: I am only giving this four eggs because the glass plate has a large blemish (looks like a smudge) that cannot be removed. I'm pretty sure it's on the underside, but I don't want to risk taking the scanner apart to try to wipe it off. So far this hasn't been noticeable in any of my scans, but it is a bit disconcerting.

Other Thoughts: I have had problems with double-sided documents having the text from the reverse side showing through. I'm pretty sure there's a way to fix this using the scanner driver, but I haven't figured it out yet.

4 out of 5 eggsGood basic scanner

Pros: I just got this to replae an older Canon scanner for which no Vista drivers are available. This installed easily and worked well. Some other reviews say it works only with the bundled photo editor but I got it to work with Paint Shop Pro by just dragging and dropping the PSP icon onto a dialog. I also like its ability to automatically crop the scanned image to the size of the scanned object. One less step for me to do manually!

Cons: Canon claims the scanner does 4800 x 9600dpi natively but none of the software I've used it with seems to allow you to set resolutions anywhere near that.

Other Thoughts: I haven't tried it for OCR as I don't really use that much, if ever. For basic scaning of photographs (haven't tried 35mm slides yet), it's done the job pretty well. I bought a refurbished unit from NewEgg and it looks brand new, though the box was clearly NOT a retail box.

4 out of 5 eggsCanon 4400F update by Sam

Pros: Scanner is still working fine using ArchSoft. Page Manager works good, also. The price of the scanner is good. You get you money's worth, even if you don't use the buttons on the scanner.

Cons: The buttons on the scanner and the programs associated with them are confusing for me. I click on the Canoscan Toolbox and try to scan using the toolbox and it always comes back with insufficient memory. I then use the button on the computer and it scans fine. I though I was pretty smart, but I guess my aging brain is going senile. The scanner is great if you are a genius and can figure out everything with the associated programs.

Other Thoughts: Buy one if you need a good scanner.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It has many options. I haven't used but one so far, but it appears to be doing a fine job on the test scans I have made. I had a Canon 660D scanner I was using, which is still working fine, but I wanted to upgrade to a newer model. I kept the 660D as a backup. It has always done a fine job for me and I expect the Canon 4400F to do just as well. I have had the Canon 660D for over ten years and never had a problem with it, so I don't expect any problems with this newer model 4400F.

Cons: The scanner glass arrived dirty on the bottom side that can't be cleaned by the user. The Canon 660D was the same way when I purchased it, but I finally figured a way to clean it. I will probably do the same with the the 4400F. I think Canon should make sure its remanufatured and recertified scanner glasses, as well as their new scanners, are thouroughly cleaned on both sides and insepected to make sure they are never sent out dirty.
