1 out of 5 eggsNot for business applications

Pros: Fast

Cons: No TWAIN, WIA, or ISIS Support! This is not mentioned anywhere except in the operator's manual. This renders the scanner useless for any 3rd party application interface. DO NOT BUY IF YOU NEED TO CONNECT TO ANY OTHER APPLICATION

Other Thoughts: This thing is useless to anyone but a very basic home user.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome machine

Pros: What a machine! Small, fast, and perfect. The Scansnap software that comes with it makes filing a breeze, either locally or to my dropbox account. Double sided on one scan, different sized documents at the same time are no problem. It's blazing fast. I used it the other day in front of one of my customers who basically drooled over it. She had to try it, wrote down the number and was off to buy one. Great product!

Cons: Not many cons. The only thing I would change it the paper width slider - I'd make it a little easier to move. It only does up to 9" wide, which is the majority of what I have.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's a Snap to Scan

Pros: More than enough to scan personal documents. Bills, statements, medical docs, tax docs.etc. Easy setup; doesn't really need power adapter if you have two USB ports available, one must provide sufficient power to scanner.Easy to clear jams (see Cons). Very light and compact. Software is excellent. Able to combine PDFs into one without Acrobat. Flexible storage options. Good value for the price over the larger 1500 model.

Cons: Only problem is some pages do not get pulled into scanner evenly and starts to stray from the guide path. Will cause an occassional jam but easy to clear and can resume from point of last successful scan. I believe the rollers are too close together but that's to accomodate smaller documents.

Other Thoughts: Highly recommended for home use to purge paper documents.

5 out of 5 eggsSmall and Fast

Pros: This little scanner exceeds my expectations. It is small, fast and duplexes automatically. I like the software interface that comes with it also. Would highly recommend.

4 out of 5 eggsGood document scanner

Pros: I purchased this scanner after having looked at various scanners. I am a commuting grad student and about half of my professors have not digitized their handouts. This helps me to keep everything on my laptop. I have a light to moderate number of papers that are scanned on a daily basis.

-Automatic document feeder
-Scans directly to pdf format with no needed conversion
-Reliable performance and easy operation (I think someone who is not technically inclined could easily navigate the software)
-Includes OCR software
-Duplex scanning
-Easy to remove paper if it jams while scanning
-very portable

Cons: -The software included is easy to use for basic tasks, but for more complex tasks its interface feels restrictive.
-No TWAIN or ISIS support
-Need CD-Rom drive to install the software easily. There could be problems with newer portable laptops- an option to download from their website is available, but need to fill out information in order to gain accesss
-relatively small amount of papers can be placed in the document feeder in this model (10 pages)
-I have read of issues where being powered by USB there isn't enough power supplied and creates issues, but have not run across this myself as I always use the AC adapter.

Other Thoughts: For certain situations, this scanner is a great deal given features and price. I generally don't like installing software for peripherals, but the included software is almost necessary to get reasonable use out of the scanner. No TWAIN or ISIS support will really limit the types of applications this scanner can be used for. The construction of this is mostly plastic, but seems solid enough to last with moderate usage.

4 out of 5 eggsWhat the specs don't tell you

Pros: Speedy
Compact
Bundled OCR software
Image quality
Batch scanning

Cons: Poor handling of mixed batch sizes
Can't scan new batch while OCRing last batch

Other Thoughts: It wasn't clear from the specs and marketing materials, but this ScanSnap model doesn't handle batches with mixed paper sizes. This is a significant shortcoming if you are scanning a bunch of old bills, since you often have to tear of part of one of the sheets to return with your payment.

I believe the S1500 has the ability to scan batches of mixed size sheets. I originally planned to buy an S1500, but this model was cheaper and yet seemed on paper to be just as good a fit for my needs.

Another annoyance with the included Mac software, the ScanSnap Manager doesn't let you scan a new batch while the previous batch is being processed for OCR. Fortunately, there is a workaround. Rather than scanning to a file, you use the option to scan to the included 'Scan for Searchable PDF," application. This will create a PDF and then automatically open it in a separate app which will automatically perform OCR. You can keep on scanning and each new scan will be queued up for OCR.

5 out of 5 eggsbest as what it does

Pros: A friend of mine has used the same product for over a year. He loved it, I tried it and I fell in love with it. - It is quick, easy to use, scans just about everything, no jams, duplex. Have used scanners for over 25 years. Including some very high end custom ones. This one just works. Even the autorotation which I have other vendor software goof up has worked consistently. scanning much better then my two all in ones.

Cons: Getting use to the setting for workflow can be a little complicated. But the defaults work just fine in most cases. Have to remember to change from duplex to simplex scan from the quick menu is not intuitive. Some of my scanned documents have preprinted back information that I forget to auto ignore (if blank, automatically removes).

Other Thoughts: IF you want to integrate into custom workflow will take some work. Have to use the supplied software, can't use the scanner directly. But once you use get it up and running, can use with just about any workflow software as a external source.

4 out of 5 eggsThis thing is great.

Pros: quick & simple scanning, creates searchable PDFs that do not take a large amount of file space, great portability features, great integrated program, and lots of nice bells & whistles that would be appreciated by anyone scanning a large amount of documents.

Cons: page limit is sad. 20 or 30 should be the standard. furthermore, the Scan to Folder setting always pops up the preview in a small window and I would prefer to have the ability to automatically maximize that window. I snooped around and found a Scan2Folder ini file, but cannot for the life of me find any code that would make the window maximized upon opening it, despite the fact that there are window size settings with number values for up down left right for which changing the values does not do anything! ...

Other Thoughts: great device, and the best thing i could find cost wise. bought one originally for ~$208 and a second one for ~$216.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT SCANNER

Pros: Fast duplex scanning, great software. If you need a scanner on the budget for big projects that involve scanning lots of pages of documents this would be just fine, you can also spend more money and get the next model which can handle more pages in the feeder.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: Quick scan time. Reliable paper feed. Compact.

Cons: Setup was a little tricky. One extra step in scan process than older Fujitsu ScanSnap units in our office.

Other Thoughts: Our office receptionist loves this scanner. It doesn't take up much room on the counter and it scans quick. She was pleasantly surprised to see that it scans both sides at once and in color. No paper jams so far when loading multiple sheets in feeder. I will buy more as we need them. Also, this is half the price of the older Fujitsu ScanSnap units we have in the office (5 units). Great buy!
