1 out of 5 eggsFour steps backward

Pros: The previous version of this product was terrific.

When it works correctly, it is fast..

Cons: The updated version is terrible: it regular crumples receipts. Their proposed solution is inane: use the sheet feeder? Why would someone purchase a document scanner for its ability to scan multiple documents quickly, and then use a sheet feeder?

So I have to scour the web in search of something that works.

Sigh. $500 down the tubes.

3 out of 5 eggsSuperior Scanner with some flaws

Pros: Fast reliable scanning.
Does not jam and has few misfeeds.
Software is good for setting Keywords on the PDF, which makes searching (Windows search) much easier.
Outstanding hardware
One button operation
Compact when folded

Cons: USB 3.0 ports are finicky. Only works with certain motherboards/ports (Only Intel, AMD and one other manufacturer is supported,). You can use USB 2.0 in this case, so not a big deal, but the caveat should have been mentioned in the troubleshooting guide.
I spent 4 hours trying to get the scanner to work, following their troubleshooting guide, until I found an obscure blurb on the Fujitsu website about USB 3.0 ports not being recognized.

Other than that, it does not come with TWAIN drivers, so cannot scan directly from most applications. There are work-arounds (scan to a folder, etc.) but you lose some flexibility.

Other Thoughts: Included Software is good for the job - handles PDF Keywords well - Easy to assign Keywords and then file the document to a folder based on the Keyword.
Could have had multiple hardware buttons that could have been mapped to different settings/profiles. Currently, you have to go to the system tray, find the manager application icon, switch profiles, and then scan.
An improvement to the software should allow for "Separator Sheets" or Barcoded sheets to be included between multiple documents in a batch, and the software could automatically split the document when it finds the separator. This would allow easy batch scanning.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Scanner

Pros: I have three, now. Absolutely no problems. Easy set up. Easy to learn to use. Good speed. Good scan quality. Lots of options if you want to dig deeper. Use them in a business environment so they get lots of use.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall great scanner but not for photos

Pros: Fast, easy, scans direct to Evernote
Great for going paperless

Cons: I was really expecting to be able to file documents and photos. I didn't expect professional quality on the photos, but acceptable. It turns out all my photos come out too RED. I called tech support and they were very helpful and did have some suggestions to try, but said that this scanner is really not meant for photos. They say the red comes from the gloss on the photos and the bending through the scanner. Suggestions didn't help.

Other Thoughts: I like this scanner a lot, but was really hoping it would take care of all my needs. I'll still enjoy it for documents, but I would have spent more (and this wasn't cheap) to have one that could handle all my needs.

The way it handles photos is not clear in any of the literature, but tech support clearly understood the issues.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to use

Pros: I had a prior ScanSnap model and liked it. The iX500 is excellent. Fast. easy to use. Software has enough options for different tasks. Bought for my office so all three of us now have one connected to our computer. Great way to go paperless.

Cons: None. Never had a problem with any of my three ScanSnaps.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked great - - for a while. Software for Windows 7 was good, especially liked the business card software and the OCR.

Cons: Occasionally choked on thin or wrinkled paper. Quit working after about 6 months. Lights come on, but scanner will not connect to PC via USB. Wireless connection never worked from the start.. Tried all the troubleshooting and help to no avail.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't buy another since the life is so short. I realize that this isn't a commercial grade scanner, but for $400 +, it should last longer than 6 months for the light use that I gave it.

5 out of 5 eggsMake paper simply disappear.

Pros: Decided it was time to eliminate as much paper in my home office as possible. Once I set this scanner up on my desk, I was able to feed in old bills, statements, warranties, user manuals, etc. Took three big bags to get rid of all the paper I shredded! Now a new document comes in, I scan it (takes only seconds), electronically file it and shred the paper. It comes bundled with Adobe Acrobat so you can make notations on the pdf's after scanning.

Cons: Sometimes has trouble translating business cards with intricate designs into text that will work with most contact managers. Haven't tried the scanner with multiple photos to jpegs, but I'm told that you'll need to clean the scanner sensors pretty often.

Other Thoughts: You will generate a LOT of electronic files if you start using this scanner regularly. Give some thought to how you want to label the files, where you'll store them and how you'll back them up. Do the work up front and it becomes much easier later on.

5 out of 5 eggsNo fuss - it just works

Pros: Simple to use, excellent documentation

Cons: Does not support TWAIN standard

Other Thoughts: I have been using a large flatbed scanner with ADF, with PaperPort software. But I had to get a new scanner due to computer hardware upgrade. I was very hesitant to get the ScanSnap because it is sheetfed only, and most crucially would not work with PaperPort (or any other software for that matter) because it does not support TWAIN.

I understand Fujitsu's desire to make a very easy to use scanner, and they absolutely succeeded on this front. But why they could not include TWAIN is beyond me.

Given the price point of this scanner and Fujitsu's build quality, I took the plunge. This little device blew me away. It flawlessly scanned various paper sizes without fail. Load the pages, just press the one and only button, watch mezmerized as the pages are pulled thru, and you're done.

Opening the cover turns on the scanner, illuminating the blue scan button. Closing the cover turns it off. Yes, the blue light goes out, and yes I do the same checking with the fridge.

My PaperPort workaround was to set up the ScanSnap Manager software to "scan to file" to a particular folder. Then within PaperPort I move it where I want. While not exactly the same as scanning in PaperPort, the scanner's proprietary software does automatically fix page rotation and skew, and deletes blank pages.

If you are like me and are resistant to buying this because of the lack of TWAIN support, odds are there's a workaround for your situation and you will be very pleased with this scanner.

5 out of 5 eggsFantasic device

Pros: New CIS vs old CCD technology makes this just as good but incredibly fast. Also nice not to have to mess with awful ISIS or WIA drivers. Interfaces with many other apps seamlessly. Bought one for my legal client and when the boss saw it wanted one next time it's on sale. I've got an old, but still works great, scansnap for my Mac. Fujitsu will stop supporting it before it wears out, so I'll move it over to my linux box and get one of these for myself.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great document scanner. Especially enjoy the automatic OCR settings and the cardminer, which scans business cards and helps you manage business contacts.

Cons: Sometimes the documents scan a little slanted if the paper is not stacked up straight on the feeder. Also, if you're scanning massive amount of documents, the tray gets full and the paper gets all over the place. If you're going to do massive document scanning, you should get a higher capacity scanner.

Other Thoughts: Always double check for staples because if you accidently forget to take it off, it will jam up your scanner and sometimes rip the paper.
