4 out of 5 eggsPatience Needed, but good results

Pros: The price went up at least $50.00 since i bought this. The unit sets up very quickly. Just load the software, plug it in and you're ready to go. I have color slides taken by my grandfather 50 to 60 years ago. The dust and scratch removal seems to work very well, but use it sparingly. It tends to wash out details in the photos. Overall, I'm very pleased with this scanner as an affordable way to convert color slides to digital. 1200dpi seems to be the best setting for trade-off between file size and quality. The little Quicktime movies with the software are very helpful in getting started. A quick Google search will get you to forums where people share their advice and tricks to get better results.

Cons: It's not really a con, but this scanner will NOT work miracles. If your slides have been knocking around in the bottom of a drawer unprotected for 40 yrs, perfection will not be had. The software is just enough to make you wish you had the next better version (typical!). It does not provide the ability to do multiple masks unless you reload the scanned image and rework sections of it over and over.

Other Thoughts: Slides need to be pre-cleaned. Invest in a good anti-static brush and some compressed air. I actually wipe the slides first with an old soft-cotton T-shirt (make sure there is nothing abrasive!). I've been getting some great results, and my mother and father never even knew there were color photographs of their wedding in 1958! So, well worth the investment. Thanks Newegg!

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Comes with Silverfast software. Cheap. Reliable. High speed of scanning.

Cons: The actual resolution is far below 7200 dpi. Dust removal at high resolutions is unusable. There is an alignment issue of the infrared image; an infrared image of dust does not match dust on the negative. It's a bit painful to do color-correction of positives. Overall, color-reproduction and can be better

Other Thoughts: 7500i should be better than 7200i (all major bugs and issues should be ironed out). Dynamic range could be better.

5 out of 5 eggsplustek 7200i

Pros: Great film scanner . The infared scratch and dust detector works well on color slides. I have found that B+W negatives work best when you use the custom monocrome film selection.
7200 dpi is a little overkill (huge files), but it is there if you want it. I scan most things at 2400 dpi.

Cons: The usb connection stopped working but I got an RMA from New Egg without a problem.

Other Thoughts: If you have a lot of 35mm film and slides like I do,you will love this scanner.

2 out of 5 eggsA real disappointment

Pros: Promised features could be quite good if they worked. The price is excellent if the features worked.

Cons: The infrared scratch and dust removal system worked for about 15 days. It did a decent job, but then quit working. Slowly, even the software-based dust and scratch removal quit working. I contacted customer support at Plustek. Their web pages promises a 24 hour response. I never heard back. I've tried to contact them repeatedly and have never heard back.

Other Thoughts: Overall, the quality of the scans is a bit grainy compared to other scanners that I've used. Silverfast is excellent software with a few bugs.
