3 out of 5 eggskodachrome hell, E6 heaven

Pros: Ease of use, sharp scans

Cons: not kodachrome friendly, no native interface, bundled silverfast is a headache and badly dated.

Other Thoughts: My old Kodak RFS 3600 was usurped by my broke brother to scan his collection. Have to give Kodak credit for something, they made scanners that could deal with Kodachrome. Plustek is great for E6 I will admit, but Kodachromes come out dark with the famous blue cast. So I have to resort to Silverfast-
Gripe 1- Plustek should have a decent scan tool but they make you pay for Silverfast and I'm sure they get their cut. Silverfast is included and of course so is its price tag.
Gripe 2- Silverfast default Kodachrome profile is marginally decent but results in solarized colors and scans.
Gripe 3- Silverfast GUI is so out of date it's hilarious. The preview and adjustment windows are so tiny that there is no adjustment resolution. Moving a slider at all results in grotesque output changes.
Gripe 4- Silverfast upgrade workflow is a nightmare, registration never works and needed constant intervention from Germany (no US support) and its 3 months not 1 yr.
Solution - buy VueScan

Manufacturer Response:

If you purchased this scanner in the last 12 months, you are entitled to a free upgrade of Silverfast to their latest version 8. This version of the software has a newly designed GUI and also improvements to the automatic image processing algorithms and a change how the preview images are displayed.

You can visit the LaserSoft Imaging and check to see if you are eligible for the free upgrade here: https://www.silverfast.com/get_update/en.html

3 out of 5 eggsGood Hardware, Dubious Software

Pros: Seem like a solid-enough piece of hardware.
Scans at ridiculously high resolution.

Cons: The software is an abomination. It looks and feels like it was programmed using Visual Basic from 1994 for Windows 3.11 and hasn't been updated since.
It's really hard to determine "which way is up" when it comes to the way the emulsion side of the slide should be facing in the scanner.
Slower than advertised.

Other Thoughts: Does the job. Not an expensive piece of Hardware.
If you need to digitieold fading slides and negatives of yesteryear, this is good enough. Hire somebody to babysit it while it's working though because it is SLOOOOWW.
I've only done slide so far, not negatives yet.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Mark from Plustek here. A couple thoughts:

If you purchased this scanner in the last 12 months, you are entitled to a free software upgrade to SilverFast 8. See this link for more info http://silverfast.com/get_update/en.html

You can speed up your scans by scanning at 3600 dpi (or lower), turning off iSRD, and only scanning 1 Multi Exposure pass. If you have very dense slides, bump up the Multi Exposure to 2 passes. Turn on iSRD only when you have scratched or dusty film. 3600 dpi is good enough for most uses unless you are going to be creating poster sized prints or are going to do large crops.

Don't forget, if you have any questions, you can contact Plustek Support at http://plustek.com/usa/about-us/contact-us.html
