5 out of 5 eggsImpressive results!

Pros: Scan quality

Cons: Software and hardware are from different manufacturers.
Learning curve.

Other Thoughts: I have been obsessive about image quality since the days when I would use a grain magnifier to focus my darkroom enlarger. I am completely satisfied with the results scanning b&w negatives from the 1950's, a glass enclosed slide from 1941, and many Kodachromes from the 1970s. The scanner is good enough to pull enough dynamic range from the Kodachromes to produce images that look better than the originals! The learning curve is pretty steep to get good results. My favorite work flow for the Kodachromes is to scan to a .dng file and open in Photoshop (usually just Adobe Camera Raw).

4 out of 5 eggsPlustek OptiFilm 8200i

Pros: Hardware seems very capable. On 7200dpi scans you can see film grain sharply resolved. Great value as scanner comes bundled with Silverfast Ai.

Cons: Installation procedure is confusing. Don't be surprised if you get a bunch of error messages. You can ignore/cancel most of them and keep going. You do not need to install the Presto! PageManager program. I have used both Silverfast and Vuescan with ths scanner without issues. Both programs have their pros/cons, but if Silverfast didn't come bundled with the hardware I'd probably buy Vuescan as I think it's better value for the money. Neither program is easy to learn, but they both have a "dummies" mode that can get you going quickly to produce scans. If you scan at 7200dpi with IR dust/scratch removal and grain softening enabled it will take 15minutes per frame, even with my Core i5 CPU and 16G or RAM. These scans will also produce 500 Meg tiff files so you'd better have lots of hard drive space if you want to archive with lossless compression. Once a scan is complete Silverfast will save the file automatically. You cannot apply further enhancements to the image at this point and re-save the changes. Vuescan will allow you to make tweaks to the final scan and re-save as it keeps the raw image in memory buffer. Vuescan also seems to be quicker at processing dust and scratch filter. Negative holder guides are about 0.5mm wider than your film strip. It does not clamp the film securely so after you load your film it can still shift in the holder. You often end up with the frame a little too high or too low in the window. I'm trying out a couple of modifications to hold the film more securely. I'm also experimenting with the dust/scratch removal settings. I find when I scan at 3600dpi or lower it is very effective, but at 7200dpi the blemishes are relatively untouched. I see this with both Silverfast and Vuescan.

Other Thoughts: The scanner is USB 2.0. I'm not sure if it would help to have USB 3.0. I think the majority of the time it takes to do a scan is the movement of the scan head and post processing of the image. The transfer speed may not take up a large portion of the overall scan time.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Scanner and Software Package

Pros: Plustek does pretty decent resolution and the added plus of IR scanning for scratches and dirt. Silverfast software is fast and does a pretty decent job of controlling scanning, scratch and dust removal.

Cons: Silverfast driver installation a bit wonky. If you are using 64 bit Windows, make sure you have 64 bit drivers for the Plustek. Color correction is not always what you see is what you get.

1 out of 5 eggspoor software support and documentation

Pros: hardware seems to be working

Cons: lasersoft's documentation is for the birds
Confusing instructions and take days to get a reply.
Support tells you to go to the website FAQ and look for the answer yourself.
I have been trying to figure out how to use the IT8 calibration.
Plustek support tells me to go to Lasersoft to download calibration.
There are more than 100 reference file to choose from LaserSoft.
After you download it you cannot put that into the LaserSoft folder in your computer.
When you ask LaserSoft they just tell you the same thing but it take days for a email reply, and go to their forum to look for answer yourself.
I heard Vuescan is much more easy to use and and much better support. Very few use LaserSoft because of its poor documentation and support.

5 out of 5 eggsWow!

Pros: This is the first time I have used a dedicated transparency scanner. I know this is a new model.

I am totally impressed with the abilities of this machine. I followed the advice of the other reviewers of similar models and purchased the Vuescan software. It only took a few minutes of messing with the interface of the Silverfast software to see there would be a steep learning curve.

In minutes I am seeing old Kodachrome pics burst to life on my screen. I did purchase and read the Vuescan bible by Sasha Steinhoff. It is a must read for nubies.

I will try to update more as I scan color negatives!

Cons: None so far except one lockup when I aborted a scan. Had to reboot.
