Eclipse 5145 Single-Line Laser Scanner

Honeywell Eclipse 5145

Honeywell’s EclipseTM 5145 is a low cost laser-based alternative to CCD scanners. Its compact form factor and high end feature set simplify its use in a variety of applications at the press of a button.

Eclipse is a single-line, hand-held laser scanner. Equipped with Honeywell’s patented CodeGate® technology, Eclipse can be used in a wide variety of applications. CodeGate® technology allows the user to easily target the desired bar code and complete data transmission with the press of a single button. This makes Eclipse a perfect selection for menu scanning, point-of-sale, document processing and inventory control.

With Honeywell’s state-of-the-art scanning technology, the Eclipse 5145 has a longer working range and a wider scan field than a typical CCD. The width of the scan line grows as the scanner moves further away from bar codes.

CodeSense® is a unique feature employed by Eclipse in the absence of infrared object detection. It provides the user with a pulsing laser line for bar code detection. When a bar code is detected, the laser line switches to a constant state to allow for scanning via CodeGate®.

Features

  • CodeGate:
Zero in on desired code and complete data transmission with the push of a single button - ideal for menu scanning applications
  • CodeSense:
Automatically wakes scanner from sleep mode when a bar code is detected
  • Powerlink Cables:
Uses the same user-replaceable cables and power supplies as Voyager® and Orbit®
  • Flash ROM:
Protects POS investment with free firmware updates via MetroSet2 software and standard PC
  • OPOS and JPOS System Compatible:
Easily adaptable to any end-user system environment

4 out of 5 eggsUsers love these!

Pros: Long USB cable, button prevents accidental scans, highly customizable, tough.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought these as a compliment to my company's internal database. Have had no problems.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent scanner

Pros: Works out of the box, just plug it in and it acts like a keyboard. Laser-type scanner. Cord is more than long enough.

Cons: Construction makes it feel cheap. Really small barcodes can be troublesome.

Manual is very confusing if you don't understand barcoding (on the upside, the defaults are suitable for most users).

Other Thoughts: It takes time to adjust to having the button on top, especially if you're used to trigger-type scan guns.

I wouldn't recommend it for heavy use, but it's definitely alright for light office or home use. I'm using it to inventory computers and computer parts, and it does the job just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Scanner

Pros: Easy setup, automatically detected by Linux when plugged into a USB port, long USB cable included, scans multiple bar codes. Laser diode. Good price at under $100. Good scan rate.

Cons: No trigger. Instead, it has placed an activation button on top of the scanner.

Other Thoughts: The scanner comes configured with the laser always-on, I can't find a way to keep the laser off until pressing the scan button. It's a minor annoyance, and certainly not problematic enough to keep me from recommending the scanner. The scan rate is good. In practice, I've been able to scan about four barcodes per seconds.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy Customer

Pros: Looks like the company has been reading these reviews as my copy shipped with a 10' cord. Very nice. Unit is smaller than I expected but seems well made. Branded Honeywell.

Cons: stays on all the time. I recall reading that there was a setting to change this behavior.

5 out of 5 eggsGood scanner

Pros: Good scanner, works every time. Easy to use. Works on an Apple Mac.

Cons: I also found the beep to be pretty loud. I was Leary of the top button, but it seems to be OK.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks in Linux

Pros: Good basic barcode scanner - we're using it for entering in MAC addresses for network deployments and VoIP rollouts, and testing some barcode printing software. Just plug it into a USB port and it acts just like another keyboard.

Cons: Button is on top of the scanner - slightly awkward. Beep is kind of loud for an office environment.

Other Thoughts: Good low-volume barcode scanner. I wouldn't use it for large-scale deployments, but for testing, development, or smaller jobs, it does fine.

4 out of 5 eggsI give it 4 stars

Pros: I bought this scanner for home use. We have 1000+ books and wanted to create a library database. Plug & play setup worked great. Basic configuration for the sounds and scan duration were easy.

Cons: As another user stated, the manual leaves a little to be desired if you're not a barcoding pro.

Other Thoughts: This scanner allowed me to enter 100+ books per hour, limited only by the speed of the software. Much better than entering 40 per hour manually. I think the scanner is well worth the price for a homeowner or a small shop.

Do yourself a favor and buy a USB extension cable. I plugged it in to my laptop so I can take it to the books, but the cable is still a little too short.

To the reviewer that complained about the constant scanning: check the manual. You can set it to turn off after a couple of seconds of inactivity.

3 out of 5 eggsUm...

Pros: It has cool sounds? And different Features. Good Plug and play. No problems in installation.

Cons: Its really light. Feel like your going to break it if you drop it. I don't recomend for constant use. Cable is really short. Its much harder to target things with this than our other ones. USB cable is too short. It is always scanning. Which is really anoying if you are in a retail store. (Keeps zapping your customers in the eyes or you.)

Other Thoughts: Ticked off my manager with the crazy sounds you set it to make!
