Larger barcodes such as UPS shipping labels from 24 inches. Seems very rugged. Cons: None Other Thoughts: I didn't order the "retail" kit. This new egg part number does not come with the proprietary cable (as stated in product title!!!) So, if you don't feel like messing with making your own cable, don't get this part. Get the one with the cable included!!! I used memms instructions above and it works like a charm. I have bought other Symbol equipment (charging cradles) and gotten burned by the "no cable included", which is very frustrating. Cons: No cable Other Thoughts: I bought a different model from Newegg that came with the wrong cable, but ALL LS2208s are capable of multiple interfaces. U can make a USB cable for the scanner with a standard RJ45 connector. No need for a RJ50 connector and crimper, but u must be able to solder. Pinouts for the scanner are available online, and here's how I did it. First, open up the unit by prying off the front soft plastic piece using a small screwdriver. Next, push the tabs on each side and pull off the top and the glass. Squeeze tabs on the bottom to release trigger, pull out the PCB and trigger. Solder a jumper from pin 1 to 6 on the connector on bottom. Pin 1 is square and on right. Reassemble. Get a USB cable and cut off end & strip off sheathing. With tab of the RJ45 pointing down, P1=red(V+), P2=Black(Gnd), P4=Green(D+), P6=White(D-). It's kinda hard to get wires in correct slots, but keep trying. Crimp it. nmr 12/11/2008 9:47:53 AM Tech Level: 3/5 Ownership: 3/5	Rating: 4/5make symbol LS2208 usb cable Pros: Good scanner for the money i bought it for around $80 plus from newegg. looks like it has a lot of features, i like the serial emulation driver for usb which you can download from the website. Cons: no cables included Other Thoughts: Finally i found the usb pinout to the scanner. Its in the pdf user manual, search for pinout in the pdf. The only problem is you need rj-50 adapters and a crimp which you can get from http://connecttech.net I know it costs almost the same if you buy it with cables but i can make a long long cable so i can scan away from my computer. Cons: WARNING: Do not attempt to buy the OPEN BOX version of this product from NewEgg. NewEgg apparently does not understand the cables to this product are NOT OPTIONAL, and CANNOT BE FOUND IN THE PUBLIC. Open Box units ship without the proprietary Symbol RJ-45 to USB cables. You can try other RJ-45 to USB cables, however the pinouts are not correct and with the wrong pinouts the trigger on the LS-2208 sends a hard reset to the PC. Very catastrophic.
