1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE

Cons: I purchased this scanner because I finally found an instrument which would scan something larger than
8 1/2 x 11. I am guessing my unit was defective because it was necessary to return it. it worked fine
for a written document, but for pictures, maps, etc. it was dreadful. I sell a lot of things on line which are oversized but this machine was not the answer. Newegg made me pay return shipping and even hit me with a 15% restocking fee on a defective piece of equipment, which after talking to 4 different customer service reps, they generously resended (There policy being, we didn't manufacture it, we are not responsible for it). A bad experience was made much worse by Newegg reps resisting doing the right thing all along.

Other Thoughts: Having purchased from NewEgg a number of times before, and having had friends and relatives do the same, I was shocked by their customer service reps
attitudes and NewEgg's rediculous policies toward returns(shipping fees, restocking fees, etc.). Of course I never returned anything before so how was I to know.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Doubt About It

Pros: Perfect size for scanning comic book panels. Excellent resolution and clarity. Scans faster than anything I've used in the past at higher resolution. The quality of the unit is pretty high.

Cons: The bundled software is clunky and ugly, luckily I just directly import these into photoshop without having to monkey with the software settings at all. Also, as many others have mentioned, the software auto-launches every time the cover is opened. There really ought to be some easy way to disable this "feature", but them's the breaks.

Other Thoughts: I strongly recommend this scanner. I love it unreservedly. I have tried a Canon lide 700e and another Epson of similar build and quality and there is literally no comparison. The Mustek gets it done more quickly and with absolutely zero hassle. If you're scanning comic panels it's a true dream-come-true. It's more expensive than those smaller scanners, but it gets it done in a quarter the time.

1 out of 5 eggsMustek Service Atrocious

Pros: Comes in a nice black color

Cons: Bought this scanner and immediately had trouble scanning certain colors. A call to tech support advised that I return the unit. The new unit had similar symptoms even on two different computers and different scanning software. I returned the unit via UPS as instructed, $60 I had to pay, and within a few weeks got a unit with no letter or notice indicating if it was fixed, replaced. Phone calls have gone unanswered and not returned. Worst of all, I sent the unit with some unique material to use to test the scanner and it was not returned, even though a letter was attached to it with the SRV number and instructions to return it.
Call for support? Their phone routing system is atrocious. Don't purchase this unit and don't buy anything from Mustek. You will regret it.

Other Thoughts: Avoid company and product line. Poorly run shop.

4 out of 5 eggsWorkable with some tweaking

Pros: A large format scanner that wont break the bank.

Cons: After reading all of the bad reviews about the Mustek 1200 Pro Flatbed Scanner and only positive reviews of the 2400 version I thought for sure this scanner wouldn't have the issue of the software that keeps opening every time the scanner lid is opened or at least have some simple way of disabling that software from popping up every time. Well I was wrong, the same program, called Panel, opens up every time the lid is opened and Mustek didn't incorporate any way to disable it from doing so. Being that I repair computers for a living, I thought of a few tricks that could resolve the issue such as editing the regitry entry at Cmdline of [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\StillImage\Events\PanelButton\{37745268-6AA8-4611-9EB3-BEEFCE1C75EB}] or just renaming the panel.exe file to something else such as panelbad.exe but I found a much simpler solution to the problem. The scanner lid has a piece of plastic that blocks an infrared switch when the lid closes, so I simply took...

Other Thoughts: a small piece of paper and folded it into a gull wing shape and put the v part down in the infrared switch hole, that way the switch will always read as closed. If I ever change my mind and want Panel to start opening on it's own, I can simply remove the piece of paper. The other problem I had was when using Adobe Acrobat to scan in documents, particularly receipts, I found tha the auto rotate was not working, that was because the scanner lid background is black instead of the normally white backgrounds that most scanners have. Acrobat was not able to understand this so was not straightning my scans out. To solve this I took some card stock thickness paper and taped it to the lid bottom, essentially changing the color to white. So all in all I'm going to give this scanner 4 eggs because it is very reasonable in price and I was able to resolve the issues fairly easily, but if you use an aftermarket software to do your scanning for you, be ready to get creative in your workaround.

4 out of 5 eggsnice support

Pros: Large size, good quality scans, good tech support

Cons: original item came in defective

Other Thoughts: I went to the local (Tustin, CA) facility and they replaced the scanner after confirming the defect of my unit. Support at 408 area code is worthless, just ask them for 949 number

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: A great A3 sized scanner for the price, other ones can cost 1000's of dollars.

Scans very fast; a 600dpi color scan only takes a few seconds. My old scanner would take 20 minutes to scan the same thing!

Works with Windows XP, Windows 7 and even my old Photoshop 6 software.

Came with the latest software / drivers on the CD, it was even a newer version than they had online.

Cons: Uses older CIS image sensor technology.

Image preview in the Twain software is way too small, only around 2" x 3" on my 24" monitor.

The top lid is not permanently attached to the scanner, you can just pull it off when it's open. It's not really a con though if you want to scan thick books.

When scanning my pencil drawings the whites look a little gray, I need to whiten them up with Photoshop.

I have to store it under my bed because it's too big to fit anywhere else.

Other Thoughts: When the lid is opened an annoying little scanning panel automatically pops up on screen every time. To disable this go to the scanner properties in the Control Panel (on XP) and set it to open your imaging program instead, or you can just disable it.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a beast!

Pros: Scanner works perfectly, no button on the machine itself but don't let that scare you. PC knows when the hatch is open and installation of software was painless. Pop in the CD driver and you are good to go. Quality of scans will not disappoint.

Cons: Even though I read through the dimensions don't let that picture fool you . . . this scanner is a BEAST. I have a massive workstation and can not find anywhere to put it. The interface that pops up associated with the scanner is for a better lack of terms . . .slightly disappointing. You'll be greeted with obnoxious sound effects and limited preference options. The interface is "toddler friendly" giving you lots of BIG symbols for every button. Needless to say anyone utilizing this machine is clearly already knowledgeable regarding scanners- they could have tailored the interface to match its users.

Other Thoughts: On a totally unimportant side note the blue glowing trims on the top of the scanners lid . . . don't glow at all. I was really hoping they would. :-( Unless mines broken . . .

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Machine!

Pros: It installed on it's own with Windows XP. Scanned great to .bmp, or a couple other formats. I imported to MS Publisher (11x17) and saved as .pdf. The HIGH resolution is amazing!
Still going to check out some of the extra software that cam with it, actually installed the program that comes with it manually.
The ones comparable are $1,400 - $3,000. Did my research. Great reviews all over the web. It actually scanned right to the edge of the sheet on the contact end, and cut little less than 1/2" off the other, but with my 1/2" border on the original it was fine when I pasted into publisher, stretched to fit and left 1 end 1/2" from edge. PRESTO!!! Great .pdf

Cons: Just check out the free EXTRA software. At least one requires you buying a license.

Other Thoughts: This is going to save me a FORTUNE in scans for my engineering firm!!! I don't need a $14,000 scanner.
