5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Size, software, ease of use, installation is easy.

Cons: none, love this little unit, it does everything perfectly. I haven't had any problems with it at all. If you know how to use paper port, I don't know how you can beat this deal.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure why anyone would have a problem with this scanner. It has handles everything I feed it. Highly recommend!

1 out of 5 eggsXerox DocuMate 3115 - ADF

Pros: Small size doesn't take up much room. Scan quality good. Scans in B/W & Color.

Cons: I unpacked the box and got it set up easily. It interfaced with my computer nicely. The ADF does not recognize that there are documents in it. I keep getting an error code "There are no documents in ADF", when actually there are. I tried everything, but cannot get the ADF to recognize that there is a document waiting to be scanned. Front loading access works fine.

1 out of 5 eggsNightmare!

Pros: Came in a box?

Cons: Won't work! A total exercise in frustration. This was supposed to be an upgrade to my existing Xerox scanner (Documate 510) but nothing is able to run consistently and my machine now has the "blue screen of death" malady. Sorry Xerox/Visioneer not even close!

4 out of 5 eggsWorking very well

Pros: Currently I have HP 3970 for graphics scanning and Dell 1600n for document scanning (with ADF) - one side at a time. Saw good price on Xerox Documate 3115, even with some negative, want to give it a try. Try a number of single-sided documents through ADF, about 15 pages. Feed through well. Sometimes, forgot that you have to feed facedown. Try a number of double-sided pages, worked well also. (See some cons). The front-feeding work more straight than the ADF. (See some cons). I must have run through over 1,000 scans already in just a few days (I am trying to catch up with delays).

Cons: It took a while to set up the one-touch buttons to scan (so far, only set up the option 1 to go to PaperPort). Seems have to preset the destination folder. So I don't use much as I jump among 50 or so folders all the times. Front-feed: if you have pre-folded papers, sometimes, on the reverse feed (the paper goes in forward feed and scanning, then the paper go back reversely to return the paper to you), the two upper pins in the back caught the creases and ripped the paper; got three or four papers ripped a part because of this. On the ADF feeding, if the paper is thin, it may not feed straight down; so skewing a little; I sometimes try the Xerox front-feeding; sometimes; just use the flat-bed on the Dell 1600n to scan.

Other Thoughts: Come with Kodak VRS (not sure what that is), NewSoft Presto BizCard 5, ScanSoft OmniPage 15, ScanSoft PaperPort 11, One-Touch 4.0 (on the scanner, there is a dial to select pre-set 1 through 6, 1 - Scan, 2 - eMail, 3 - Copy, 4 - OCR, 5 - Photo, 6 - Archive). I only tried PaperPort and Pre-set Scan, as I need to archive my documents and then shred them away. Have not try other options yet.

There are some negatives, but so far, I like this scanner because of duplex speed --- don't have to scan front then rear.

The scanner is small, where Xerox designed the ADF and paper catcher to fold into and onto the main body, to the size of 11-5/8 x 4-5/8 x 4-3/4 (wxhxd) - you use AC adapter for power. Or you can pop-out the main scanner body to carry with you, using USB for power (separate USB for data), 11-5/8 x 2-3/4 x 3-1/4; you will miss the ADF of the docking station; however, you still can scan single sheet at a time - simplex or duplex.

1 out of 5 eggsMac support is a fraud

Pros: None.

Cons: This item is advertised to have Mac support (even says so on the box), but does not ship with Mac drivers. Instead, one must register the scanner's serial number (which was nowhere to be found on the scanner or otherwise), then give up all sorts of personal information to get an activation code for a piece of bloatware that's incompatible with every tool I intended to use it with. A call to Xerox tech support (and a 30 minute wait) verified that there is NO TWAIN driver for the Mac. Mac support is all but false advertising.

Other Thoughts: If you intend to use this with a Mac, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 eggsanti-skew malfunctions [s/w]

Pros: lightweight, does the job. has detachable module for single pages designed for the road warrior. simplex/duplex buttons on scanner. COmpares well to Snapscan 500 and was much less $.

Cons: The included MAC software is a trial until you register
The default is to anti-skew - if left on, almost every page I scanned was skewed terribly. The pages were feeding in perfectly, so I was very concerned. After winding through available S/w options, I found an 'anti-skew' gadget. Turning that OFF solved the problem (!)

Other Thoughts: Xerox technical support was a highly variable experience.
Would recommend Paperport as alternative s/w
