4 out of 5 eggsCheap way to upgrade laptop to USB 3.0!

Pros: - fast transfer speeds

- I didn't have to work any kind of magic with drivers to get the card to work... just used the included CD. Works just fine with Win. 7 x64.

Cons: - have to hold onto the card when unplugging USB cables (or else it pops out of the spring-loaded express slot)
- have to plug USB cables into card, then slide the card into the express slot

It's not a huge deal... not the card's fault.

Other Thoughts: Comes with:

- USB 3.0 Single ExpressCard/34
- USB power cable
- Driver CD
- User's manual

4 out of 5 eggsSIIG JU-EC0212-S1 USB 3.0 Single ExpressCard/34 1 x USB 3.0

Pros: Can be quite fast:
~75-100MB/sec on 2GB .pst file transfer from E6510 Samsung 830 system disk to My Passport Ultra portable drive.
~20-25 MB/sec on 60GB of picture and movie files transfer in same configuration
Quick Install - see directions below

Cons: Plugging the drive USB 3 cable into the SIIG card while installed in laptop causes the card to pop out (at least on my 3 Dell E65XX's)

Other Thoughts: 1. Download and install the latest driver from SIIG Support site first
2. Make sure the extra USB cable (for power) is plugged into a powered slot ;-) or your external disk will show as a device but not a drive
3. (Win 7) Use safe to unplug device (external drive) then safe to unplug device (SIIG card) to completely remove the card and drive.
4. After installation, plug device cable into SIIG card and then into PC Express slot or the SIIG card will pop out

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible device

Pros: When it works it functions just like any normal USB 3.0

Cons: Most of the time the device just destroyed my laptop, made things slow abnormally to a crawl beyond anything I've seen happen to a computer if i was lucky. Other times it would BSOD. Used the up to date drivers from the website and still major issues. It effected the system so much it even made the sound coming out of speakers come out in slow motion. I will be trying to return this.

Other Thoughts: This card was used on a NEW install of Win 7 Ultimate.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent way to connect USB 3.0 HDD

Pros: Works as advertised. Appears to be of good quality. Comes with separate USB power cord. Updated drivers on web site. Fast file transfers using USB 3.0 HDD.

Cons: This SIIG expresscard needs to be held onto with one hand while withdrawing the USB plug with the other, else the entire card will pull out. Half-size card doesn't come with 10 cent slot-stabilizer to fill out the other half of the expresscard slot-get N82E16839158051

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Works great in my Dell E6510 Windows 7 64-bit. Card fits flush to the edge of the laptop. No problem detecting a variety of USB 3 and USB 2 devices.

Much more reliable than the Silverstone EC02 Express Card I had previously. The Silverstone was very flaky about device detection and didn't seem to re-initialize properly after hibernation.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I was able to update this to the latest NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 firmware and drivers from station drivers dot com.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: It works. Straight up works and used the drivers off the SIIG website. No issues.

Cons: Box did not come with a 54mm slot adapter :-(

Other Thoughts: You'll need the power cable to plug into the card and then another usb slot to power higher powered usb 3.0 devices.

1 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 driver doesn't work

Pros: The single port express/34 card fits perfectly into the express/34 slot.

Cons: The single port express/34 card is not recognized by my system. I have a mac book pro, but run Windows 8 in Parallels.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with disk enclosures

Pros: Does not drop connection with disk enclosures, at least not with a VAIO Z and a Crucial M4 256GB SSD in either a SilverStone RVS02 or Thermaltake Silver River 5G. Gets sufficient power under load.

Not sure these are Pros, but here are stats I got:

ATTO stats ("Overlapped I/O" set to "Neither") with Crucial M4 256GB SSD in SilverStone RVS02 or Thermaltake Silver River 5G enclosure:

SIIG - USB 3.0 (Read/Write):
4k - 20/17 MB/s
256k - 115/70 MB/s

Laptop's native USB 2.0:
4k - 5/5 MB/s
256k - 27/20 MB/s

For comparison, stats with my desktop USB 3.0 Host (4-Port PCIe SIIG JU-P40212-S1):
4k - 38/43 MB/s
256k - 223/149 MB/s

With Mushkin Ventura Pro 32 GB thumb drive (formatted NTFS with 4k allocation size):

SIIG - USB 3.0, (Read/Write):
4k - 16/1.8 MB/s
256k - 110/55 MB/s

Laptop's native USB 2.0:
4k - 5/1.6 MB/s
256k - 27/12 MB/s

Cons: Prefer exposed black color when in the slot (rather than metal).

USB power cable could be longer - it's 18 inches (24 inches would be better).

Sometimes USB 3.0 devices connect at 2.0, not 3.0. Reconnecting usually fixes this.

Performance could be better, but is probably limited by my laptop ExpressCard PCIe slot, not the device.

Other Thoughts: The SIIG replaced a RMA'd SilverStone EC02, which would disconnect under load with disk enclosures I'm using. SIIG uses a more efficient uPD720200A chip.

At least one of ExpressCard or enclosure must utilize their USB power cable. (Seems ExpressCard PCIe power specs are less than USB 3.0 - an ExpressCard slot can't supply full power per USB 3.0 spec.)

ExpressCard size is standardized, so whether it's flush is totally dependant on one's laptop. "Flush" with screen lid on VAIO Z (similar to way VGA connector sticks out).

On VAIO Z, ExpressCard slot is spring-latched (press in once to latch in place, press in again to unlatch and remove). Must be careful to not unlatch ExpressCard when inserting a USB device. Also, must hold ExpressCard when removing USB device. Just the nature of ExpressCards.

Driver on CD is old (2.0.30.0). I downloaded 2.1.16.0 from SIIG. This worked fine. Currently using 2.1.32.0 from Station-Drivers.

5 out of 5 eggsusb 3.0 upgrade

Pros: Just arrived today and works great. I had to use the driver disk to install the Renasis USB 3.0 drivers as windows couldn't find them on its own. I'm not experiencing any of the heat issues I've read about on other cards like this. Speed avgs I'm seeing are write(30-50 MBps) and (50-70MBps, and these are bytes not bits). These speeds are comparable to my desktop with built-in USB 3.0 ports, it's faster but it also is a lot more advanced. I put this in a SONY VAIO VPCF126FM and I've seen 18GB folder transfer to a portable 1TB drive in about 3-5 mins. Card came with a USB powercable but I didn't need it for the drive I used. I imagine different laptops may behave differently with this tech but mine loves it.

Cons: USB power cable is too short to use with this laptop(should be at least 6-8 inches longer), USB 2.0 ports on my laptop are on opposite side of express slot. The card protrudes about 2mm from slot so I wouldn't consider this a complete flush mount, but I'm not deducting any eggs because it works w/o any of the problems I've read about with the SYBA cards except that it will pull out if you don't keep a finger on it when removing a cable from it.

Other Thoughts: In regards to the card coming out when a cable is pulled upon I'm not sure what can be done w/o possible liability issues to physical damage to a slot, so I'm not deducting any eggs for that either. I've tried a toshiba(1 tb) and seagate(1.5 tb) with this and niether needed the power cable. My laptop is about 2 years old and I don't expect the full 5Gbps but it is easily 2-4x faster then when I use the 2.0 ports.
