5 out of 5 eggsvery good card

Pros: - uses the SiI 3132 chipset, which is what you want. Has drivers even for RAID at the Silicon Image website, though I haven't tested those.

- 54mm ExpressCard, so it wont move in your slot if you have the big one.

- hot swappable, on the slot side and on the sata side. I'm with XP Pro 32bit, in AHCI mode.

- has LEDs :)

Cons: - stick out by quite a bit from the slot, so not very comfortable to leave it inside all the time.

Other Thoughts: - ExpressCard slot x1 gives you 2.5GB/s top speed, so the card itself is actually faster at 3GB/s. To use it at that speed you need the ExpressCard x2 slot that gives you 5GB/s and comes with some newer laptops, in which case the slot itself will not be the limiting factor.

I have the x1 slot in my Lenovo T61 and already using this card with a 500Gb 5400 rpm Hitachi HDD that tops at 80MB/s, same as what I get if this HDD is plugged internally.

The first time it took good 5 min untill the HDD was found as SATA device though, no problems with later plug in/outs of the HDD. The card itself got recognized right away.

4 out of 5 eggsGood..but

Pros: Price..fast..good build quality

Cons: Doesn't like moving large files from one drive to the other drive when both drives are on the same card.(1 on one port, 1 on the other). Doesn't seem to support simultaneous read/write to both hdds on both ports..

Other Thoughts: Wonder if the more expensive SIG card would do better than this for transferring back and forth between hdd's using both ports?

3 out of 5 eggsDon't unplug it

Pros: When your drives are plugged in during startup, it works well. I've seen short sustained data rates of 80MB/s reads, average of 60MB/s, and max of ~120MB/s going from one eSATA drive to another eSATA drive on the same controller. Works in Ubuntu 10.04.

Cons: Do not unplug it, nor the drives connected to it. When the eSATA cables are unplugged and reconnected, the drive it's connected to MIGHT mount again. In most cases, when the card itself is unplugged and plugged back in, the device will NOT be recognized by Windows XP. This is not alleviated by instructing the device manager to search for new hardware. It won't find it. You will need to restart with the device plugged into your expresscard port to see it again.

Other Thoughts: Used on Inspiron 640m running Windows XP. Have not tested the above-mentioned behavior with Windows 7. Uses Silicon Image Sil3132 controller.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: immediately recogized, works perfect, superfast (as fast as internal bus - bottleneck is drive speed- not card speed!) card is very solid in slot. no drivers needed in XP.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Purchase

Pros: Got this for my laptop because I got a new Rosewill RX-358 external case with eSATA support and I had a LOT of files to transfe to my new hard drive. So no way in heck was I going to transfer 200GB+ through USB. It would've taken days.

-Very easy install. Just make sure you download the latest drivers off StarTech's website.

-Fits nice and snug into the express slot.

-Two eSATA ports is definitely a plus.

-Green LED's let you know when you're hard drive is at work.

Cons: It costs $50? It was definitely worth the cost though. But don't be surprised when you get this in the mail, take it out of the box, look at it, and say to yourself, "I spent $50 for this thing?" :)

Other Thoughts: I did a lot of researching before purchasing all of the components for my external hard drive and this is definitely, at the moment, the best eSATA expresscard you'll find on the market.

5 out of 5 eggsNice!

Pros: Fits right into my IBM T43 laptop. Runs very cool, can hardly tell any temperature rise. Drivers installed without any problem under WinXP Pro. Hooked up two eSATA devices (2TB drive and an external DVD burner) with out any problems or difficulties.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Satoshi Urushihara's anime art .... wow ...

4 out of 5 eggsStarTech ECESATA254 2 Port

Pros: Easy installation, fits nicely into port, solid construction, necessary chords all included.

Cons: Kind of quirky to get your computer to recognize eSATA with interfacing external drive.

Other Thoughts: I do not necessarily think the Cons I wrote as a con but just an observation. It should not keep you from ordering this very affordable usable option to get eSATA transfer technology onto your laptop. Once you get your computer to recognize it (might take two tries) it works beautifully. What I did the first time was use usb to connect external drive then I switched to the STARTECH and it worked just fine from there on out.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Windows 7 32-bit

Pros: Works as described plus automatically installed drivers when first inserted into my Acer laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. Locks into slot securely.

Cons: None at this point.

Other Thoughts: Shame the manufacturers of laptops don't build eSATA connections into the PC rather that having to use an add on ExpressCard.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

Pros: HDX18t has ONE eSATA port next ONE usb port. To do my HDD switch I needed a 2.5 external enclosure but they usually require two usb ports for power OR a PSU. This not only allows me to hook up my 2.5 but also my 3.5 at the same time. This ended up become very useful (see other thoughts).

Cons: None what-so-ever.

Other Thoughts: Since I had Vista on one HDD and Windows 7 on the other (internally), I wanted to put both Vista & 7 partitioned on my new Corsair 256GB SSD and then have one of my Hitachi 320GBs as a DATA Drive with all my personal stuff. This way I can just turn Windows Restore off and keep images. I have the files set up on DATA D:\ but still have Restore on. Windows imaging works but still rather not-so-smart if you ask me. My problem was that my Vista was an HP image which wouldn't allow me to shrink the partition;not even in Windows 7. If it wasn't for that, this unit would've truly been a hero to me since all my partitioned images are on my 3.5 external. FYI: Vista's Imaging overwrites Windows 7's Imaging. Thefore, Images of both from the same pc must be saved on seperate partiotions. Luckily I didn't learn the hard way but I did catch it. Buy this unit-very handy.
