5 out of 5 eggsCost effective USB 3.0 express card

Pros: Easy install, adds USB 3.0 ports to older machines. Driver installation is easy if you understand which driver on the CD disk is required. The Renesas chipset is a proven good USB 3.0 performer. Good value for the price.

Cons: None, assuming that you understand the USB 3.0 power limitations and the driver topology.

Other Thoughts: Some users will criticize this product because they do not understand inherent limitations [power, drivers, etc.] of installing a USB 3.0 interface into an express slot.

2 out of 5 eggsNot so great

Pros: It was delivered in a reasonable amount of time

Cons: The drivers on the CD where a joke. The drivers from the web site where no better. I tried a different driver for product using the same chip set and they worked a little.
I can install the hardware and restart my computer and all is good. I plug a USB device into the port and it works. If I try to access the USB drive for any length of time the port fails and the only way to get it back is to restart my computer. When it fails the computer starts to run very slow. Really being a pain..

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if someone who had any ideas would let me know....

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Michael,

We apologize for the issues you have experienced with our ECUSB3S22 adapter, and we would like to offer some assistance.

First, You may want to ensure that the latest drivers have been installed correctly. As you have already mentioned, the latest drivers for this card can be found on our website, at We also have installation instructions available in our Frequently Asked Questions section, which is found here:

There are a few tests you can try to help narrow down the cause of this issue, as it may not be driver related.

1. Does the port become non responsive when using USB devices other that the initial USB drive?
2. This model of card comes with an optional USB power cable, to provide extra power to the card if being used with external USB hard drive enclosures. If you have not already, please try using this cable to see if it makes a difference.
3. Can you test the card in another laptop with an ExpressCard slot? It would be best if it is a different model, if possible. If there is a similar issue on another computer then we know it is specific to the card itself.
4. Test the laptop with other ExpressCards if possible, and see if you have similar issues.

We are always here to help with our free lifetime technical support. Should you require any further assistance, please contact us and reference case number 303-199617.

Thank You,

Customer Support

4 out of 5 eggsHub great. Driver terrible (as already noted)

Pros: Great speed. Decent price.

Cons: Bad software/drivers.

Other Thoughts: A previous reviewer linked to the Sedna website for a driver that worked. I thought that was ridiculous, until I couldn't make the supplied CDR/driver work, and the one from the StarTech website was no better. Then I went to the NewEgg reviews, and *poof*, they provided the solution. The StarTech folks should be ashamed of themselves (and indebted to the community here).

4 out of 5 eggsA little work with drivers, but works perfectly

Pros: - works perfectly with 2 laptops I use: 4-year old Toshiba and 1.5-year old Lenovo.
- transfer speeds with USB 3.0 external laptop drives exceed 100 MB/sec when reading (didn't test writing)
- small but sturdy packaging. Your shipping company can go all Ace Ventura on your package, it will survive the trip.
- I'm still getting used to high quality of StarTech hardware. Software may be a little lagging in some areas, but hardware is rock solid.

Cons: - a little trouble with installing drivers. The included mini-CD has 4 folders named after the USB 3.0 chipset I guess, so it wasn't very easy to find the right folder first. Instead I ran Add Hardware wizard in Windows 7 to add a new device, told it to find the driver on selected media, and chose the right one. Afterwards the card appeared in the system and works without any issues.
- could be $10 cheaper. I'm not familiar with licensing terms of USB 3.0 for OEMs (chip manufacturers, device manufacturers), so I understand it needs to be a little more expensive, but when I see another StarTech ExpressCard with USB 2.0 (4 ports) for $16 less, I wonder if for the price I shouldn't have received 2 extra USB 3.0 ports... This is the reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5.

3 out of 5 eggshardware good, driver bad

Pros: Nice board, looks exactly like what you'd expect

Cons: Drive disc was useless and web site's driver wouldn't start the device. Good hardware, bad software. Win7 x64 driver just wouldn't work.

Other Thoughts: Found another device based on the same hardware and used it's driver (se-ec-usb3-01-sedna-driver) and all went well. None of the StarTech ones did.

5 out of 5 eggsIt Just Works

Pros: Love the dual ports and cost seemed very reasonable.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Bought this for a Toshiba Qosmio to get USB 3 support for a new external drive. Running Windows 8. Plugged the card in, hooked up the external drive, turned on the laptop and everything just worked from the very beginning.

5 out of 5 eggsFor Linux Fedora users ...

Pros: See my initial review, still working strong after a wk of hard use on several machines, Windows 7 and Linux.

Cons: Nothing.

Other Thoughts: Vanilla Fedora 17 (and perhaps other Linuxes) didn't install the xhci_hcd module by default, so USB 3.0 devices are unlikely to work or even be recognized. For reliable operation, you must yum install kernel-modules-extra

Then everything issmooth and fast.

5 out of 5 eggsPlug and play in Fedora but not Windows 7

Pros: 59 MB/s sustained write of many 0.5 GB files to WD My Passport 500 GB drive w/ ftp over 1 Gb/s ethernet on Dell Vostro 1720 laptop running Fedora 17. 4x faster than laptop's USB 2.0 ports to same drive.

I disabled port power saving to prevent disk spin-down.

Cons: Windows 7 driver was bit of a chore, not plug and play. Don't use driver on the CD, instead go to site and get latest.
