4 out of 5 eggsWorks with Macbook Pro

Pros: When used with USB, never had a problem at all with any OS version. When used with eSATA it worked great and booted reliably 100% under Leopard (OS X 10.5.0), and worked great and booted reliably under Snow Leopard (10.6) and Lion (10.7.0) at initial installation. Works fine with my external ThermalTake housing using USB and eSATA.

Cons: After upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard it was initially bootable with eSATA drives but after the first Snow Leopard OS update I lost the ability to boot eSATA with any of my three different external enclosures (ThermalTake, SimpleTech and one I forget). So I figured Apple dropped support in the EFI or kernel. Upon upgrading to Lion, magically I was again able to reboot using eSATA - until the first OS update, after which it only boots from USB. Weird & annoying.

Other Thoughts: I don't know what changes and why, but without making any changes to the external drive itself the ability to boot as an eSATA device works with original OS X installations, then goes away with the first OS update. It always boots with the USB port, but that's a lot slower than eSATA and booting eSATA is the whole reason I bought this card. Otherwise, for just accessing external drives after boot it works great with USB and eSATA. The one exception was it would not work with the Western Digital Mybook 3 TB drive, which is a USB 3.0 device and apparently incompatible with this card at least under Snow Leopard that I was running at the time.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap in every sense of the word

Pros: eSATA port seems to work ok with my MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2,2 (pre-unibody) for file transfers only, using with Thermaltake "River Duo USB/eSATA" external enclosure. Package includes an eSATA cable.

Cons: Poor fit in MacBook Pro ExpressCard 34 slot, catches and binds, requires pressing down hard on the card a lot when inserting it. First ExpressCard I got so can't compare to others, but in general you can tell when something is manufactured to high tolerances, this product is not. You can not boot Lion with this card using an external start up disk; I don't know if that's true with all eSATA cards & OS X, but in any case it's useless for that. I notice most of the Mac users who give this card more eggs are only commenting on the USB connection. I use only the eSATA port. This card contains a single port that accepts either a USB or an eSATA cable, which is fine since it's sold as 2-in-1, just understand that means 2 cable standards via 1 port, not 2 ports on 1 card. Syba site has no Mac drivers; driver download at JMB site is mislabeled, file turns out to be driver for some CF card & won't install. Lame! Driver disc is tiny 3" CD, unusable w/ my Mac & Win CD slot drives.

Other Thoughts: Overall, if you just want to occasionally transfer files a little faster than USB this is a cheap eSATA option.

3 out of 5 eggsLimited Linux Support - Strange Win 7 behavior

Pros: Compact. Power over eSata support (not yet confirmed). Works under Windows 7.

Cons: Supports only very specific linux distributions. No support for Ubuntu. No source code for driver is available on the CD or support site. Support was polite, but helpless - no ubuntu support because chipset manufacturer has not released one yet.

Other Thoughts: Writing 0s to the entire 500Gb drive under win 7 was slow - projected run-time of 244 hours! Same operation via PCIx card took 1 hour and 30 minutes. Something is not right about these two stats...

1 out of 5 eggsNot at all satisfied

Pros: was detected in Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and 32-bit computers; worked perfectly for the USB 2.0 connection but not-so-great for the eSATA connection.

Cons: eSATA hot swap would not work; eSATA port multiplier support not working

Other Thoughts: I was absolutely and completely unsatisfied with this purchase. I had this connected to a Thermaltake BlacX Dual Bay enclosure and none of the advertised features worked as described for the eSATA connection but did work as advertised for the USB 2.0 connection.

But what upset me the most was going to Syba's website to get drivers and they were zipped in RAR. RAR is not a free program. How am I supposed to unzip the drivers if I nolonger am entitled to a free trial of RAR?

I normally have good luck with Syba products but this time it was a big fat ZERO.

1 out of 5 eggsSadly, bad choice

Pros: If you use it as if you're walking on a tightrope over jagged shards of a broken computer, it will work.

Cons: My experience with this product ended with Windows 7 unable to start and System Repair resetting the state, causing a messed up antivirus prog and loss of settings and desktop changes since the last normal boot.
How did this happen?
I plugged in a USB device after ejecting an ESATA device (normal stop with the "safe to eject message) . My laptop's USB stopped responding entirely, which of course renders the mouse unusable. Fortunately, I'm one of the 10% of people who know how to keyboard around Windows, so I shut it down - or tried to. It locked on shutdown and I had to hard reset it, and boom - I'm into System Repair mode.
Not acceptable. I use my computer for both work and life management, and breaking it breaks my work and my life until I get it fixed. NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Specific faults with this device:
You must plug in the ESATA device before you plug the card in.
You must EJECT the card and replug it in before using a USB device, or it will break your USB and give Windows

Other Thoughts: Sorry Syba. You need to put out stuff that works and price it accordingly. It is not worth a few bucks savings to me to have something that does not work - that's a total loss of the money I spend, not a savings over what I could have spent.
Nobody thinks to eject a dual-use device in between changing the use. If it does SATA and USB, we expect to be able to unplug one and plug in the other and have it work WITHOUT breaking our computer. That's just how we customers roll.

5 out of 5 eggseggcellent

Pros: works fine. Out of box functional for win7 (maybe driver for e-sata, not sure--usb worked); driver needed for xp.

includes a esata cable which is handy

Cons: sticks out a little from netbook, easy to accidently dismount. More the bad design of how expresscard locks in place than anything.

Other Thoughts: you'll have to go to website for drivers

price point is pretty nuetral. Nice if cheaper; not through the roof expensive.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked perfectly for me - Win 7 64bit

Pros: Worked immediately and flawlessly on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Cons: Light on card doesn't light up at all, but I'm not sure if it should with esata, maybe it's just for usb or something.

Other Thoughts: I literally plugged it in and a few seconds later the sata drive itself was available! I ran the driver I downloaded from the web (www.iocrest.com), but it was just in case there were additional features. I followed the advice on the other reviews and had the esata plugged in before I inserted the card for the first time. I'm glad I went with esata instead of usb for my backup drive. Very quick!

1 out of 5 eggsJunk don't buy !

Pros: usb/esata combo.

Cons: one port only

Other Thoughts: It worked only 2 months. I've used it on a Macbook pro. It started to give me kernel panic on the OSX Snow Leopard. Now is completely dead. I've tried it on HP Win 7 Ultimate... the same is not working.

5 out of 5 eggsworks with macbook pro

Pros: works well with macbook. extremely fast.

Cons: sticks out a bit from the side of my macbook pro, but that's not really too much to complain about.

Other Thoughts: You can use this as a USB port when not using an e-sata device

5 out of 5 eggsTotally Worth It

Pros: This card works like it is suppose to. I got no noticeable decrease in transfer speeds between this card and the integrated esata port on my desktop's motherboard.
The drivers installed on their own almost instantly in Windows 7 64bit on a Dell Inspiron 15.

Cons: I have to turn on my device and then plug in the card. But it is easy enough to remove and reinsert it.

Other Thoughts: This is totally worth it for the money
