5 out of 5 eggsWorks, what else do you need?

Pros: Works in Debian, no issues.

Cons: Can't think of anything. It'd be sweet if it had a racing stripe.

2 out of 5 eggsHangs on Boot!

Pros: Very good price and it does work (kind of)...

Cons: Does not boot while in the system. This was tested on two different systems and neither one would pass BIOS testing while the card is plugged in. When it is hot plugged and working, it also runs on the hot side.

Other Thoughts: This card might barely pass for very casual use due to its heat and non-booting deficiencies.

4 out of 5 eggs1st day, 1st impression

Pros: It works. In fact, in HDTach I got the fastest speeds I've seen using E-SATA on this particular laptop.

I am able to connect both the card and e-sata drives without rebooting. Also, the card appears in "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" in the system tray as a "Serial ATA Controller." It can be removed without rebooting the system.

I first installed drivers manually within Device Manager (OF COURSE, with drivers from JMicron's website, 1.17.62 WHQL eSATA), but was not getting solid activity lights during file copying. I then reinstalled by running the setup application in the JMicron download, and now getting consistent activity during file copying.

Cons: My previous experiences with E-SATA have been quirky. This card is NO EXCEPTION! I don't know what the problem is, but I would blame Windows 7 and/or my laptop (Intel PM45 chipset, has known issues) before I blame this card, because I've had the same quirkiness with e-SATA even before receiving this card! On to the actual cons...

I'm only getting between 46-55 MB/s when copying from one disk to another (both connected to this card). Speed often starts high but slowly goes down to between 46 and 55 MB/s by the middle to end of the transfer. HDTach shows much higher numbers, but I've learned from previous experience that performance in HDTACH is not to be expected in all circumstances! Again, this could very well be a limitation of my laptop's motherboard, and not the card's fault, I just don't know. I deal mostly with "El Cheapo" products so it mght even be my e-sata enclosures' fault.

Other Thoughts: This is the 1st time I've used EXPRESSCARD. I've used a few PCMCIA and I was surprised to discover that my EXPRESSCARD SLOT has a spring-mechanism with 2 positions (like a retracting pen). One is in, the other is out! To install, push until it clicks (it will bounce back a tiny bit). To uninstall, you do NOT just pull the card out! You push IN until it clicks again. Then the card pushes out a little, and you pull it out. If you just pull the card out, it will not be in the position to click in when you go back to install the card again, in which case, you'll push it in but it'll just push it right back out. Then you simply click it in again, and it stays put.

I wonder if the previous user who mentioned that this card won't fit in his laptop is due to his lack of understanding of this mechanism. But then again, he *has* achieved the highest level of technical knowledge. I really don't know if all expresscard slots work like this. But then again, his laptop is made by SONY. Pfft.

1 out of 5 eggsAnother bad product

Pros: Looks pretty

Cons: This won't fit in my Sony SZ series laptop. I can't see why, but it won't lock into the contacts.

Other Thoughts: Won't be worth the time / shipping to get this returned.
