1 out of 5 eggsBeware - did not work for long

Pros: worked for a few days before dying

Cons: Stopped working after very little use. I probably only used the unit 5-6 times over the first few months of ownership. Unit simply stopped working. So cheap its barely worth the hassle of setting up return. Purchased because I needed more USB connections on laptop and it had an expresscard slot.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed

Pros: Good price for USB3.0 card.

Cons: Within a week of using this card, it began to have issues with windows disabling it.

Other Thoughts: This is the second Syba USB3 product I've purchased and both failed within short order. I'd suggest to avoid this brand.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Perhaps there was an update that needed to be applied to ensure compatability.

Please ensure that the device has been properly seated into its slot and that the system is
updated.

Thank you for purchasing on of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.

5 out of 5 eggsyou get USB 3.0 without getting new laptop

Pros: Cheap and small - great for my hp 2560p (work laptop). Also great for any older laptop with pcexpress slot. On my system it sits flush with the case - looks as if it was part of original design.
Even if not as fast as USB 3.0 based on NEC controller it'll do the job (I recently ran into USB 2.0 bottleneck when transferring user data, this prompted an upgrade).

Cons: Only 1 port? But I wanted the smallest possible design.

Other Thoughts: Can't say yet about stability. It worked fine with my USB 2.0 storage devices. Don't expect troubles with USB 3.0 - SATA adapter - but this remain to be tested.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Fits properly in the ExpressCard 34 slot

Cons: Windows 8 cannot load drivers for this card. Took my Dell laptop into an endless reboot/repair cycle until I removed the card. Product website has no support or drivers.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Windows 8 is supported. Please contact us or follow the steps below for correct driver installation:

1. Uninstall and delete the driver. (be sure to delete them if not they will reinstall the next time that you boot.
2. Power down your system.
3. Make sure the card is installed right.
4. Reboot your system and use the "Win7" drivers on your PC.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Adapts PCIe Expresscard to USB3 as advertised. With Win7 driver install is quick and easy for both 32- and 64-bit. Card detected instantly. USB3 is all it's claimed to be, as long as you're not expecting this to supply power. The PCIe Expresscard isn't spec'd to supply USB3-level internal power. Transfers data from SSD to external disk at over 100MB/sec. Impressive.

Cons: None, so far, except maybe the mini-CD for drivers which could be a problem for slot-loaded optical drives. Drivers are available online. It works perfectly in both applications I've used it. It does run a bit warm, but nothing to be alarmed about and nothing that would stress properly chosen components.

Other Thoughts: READ THE DIRECTIONS. Install the drivers FIRST, like they tell you. This uses the less-common "Fresco" chip rather than the ubiquitous NEC chip. Far as I can see, Fresco works trouble-free without unusual startup or sleep behavior.

I recommend light/limp USB3 cables if you can find them because it's very easy to pull this out of the slot due to casual movement of a stiff USB cable. If you're looking to supply power to a self-powered external disk, for example, you should look for one of the cards similar to this that has a 5VDC power input. Some come with the supply.

1 out of 5 eggsHe's right, no power

Pros: Completely fits in laptop. Works after driver install (XP). You can just leave it in the slot.

Cons: Cannot power an external 2.5 inch hard drive. Isn't that the main reason you would add USB 3 to a laptop? The great thing about USB is that it is self-powered, except when it isn't! Specifications were vague on this point, I should have listened to the first commenter.

Insufficient power means you have to use two cables. Instead buy the flush esata card. You have to use two cables but hard disk speed is highest possible. Or buy a USB 3 card or powered esata card. Not flush mount but only one cable.

Other Thoughts: Expresscard slots can power 2.5 inch hard drives. Some of the larger ones do. Maybe the needed dc dc converter is too large? Maybe Syba cheaped out?

2 out of 5 eggsCan't power a USB 3.0 bus powered hard drive

Pros: Comes with drivers as well as instructions on how to install on Windows. Compact and only sticks out of the express card slot by 1/4". Works well with devices that don't need much power or have their own external power.

Cons: Returned it because it cannot power a USB 3.0 portable hard drive that relies on the USB bus for power. Unfortunately, this card has no ability to give it extra power, so forget about using with anything besides flash drives and drives that plug into the wall.
