4 out of 5 eggsIts ok

Pros: Flush perfect in my laptop, its fast, its PCI eX 2.0

Cons: its'n than fast as they said (but make the job), don't come with the power cord (very important), its run warm but not that "hot" like other said,

Other Thoughts: it feel more warm when you plug the 5v extra power, I thing that's normal for the fact you "plug" more power, the only issue was I have to get a power cord by my own, besides that I don't have any issue or complaint, I thing was a good purchase,

2 out of 5 eggsnot impressed

Pros: It works, i can transfer files between my 3.0 external and my laptop. streams just fine.

Cons: has a port to plug in power but doesn't include any kind of power cord and i can't find one online. transfers usually start out at around 70 mb/s but decrease over time to ~11 and stays there.

Other Thoughts: if it needs more power to get to 3.0 speeds, shouldn't that have been included? i cannot find the needed cord anywhere. even on the manufacturers website.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

The power cord has nothing to do with the transfer speed.

The optional power feed will help if the USB device connected draws power from USB port and drain the laptop battery.

The decrease data trnasfer speed might be caused by other factors such as Windows, memory, hard disk free space and type of files being transfered.

1 out of 5 eggsIntermitent Connectivity - Cannot Recomend

Pros: Fits flush inside the Express slot on my Macbook Pro (early 2008).

Cons: While using with my HITACHI Touro Mobile Pro, it will constantly disconnect/reconnect the drive. It only does this while in use. I downloaded the drivers from the website (uPD720200) and installed everything successfully. It's identified correctly by the OS (Win 7 64 bit) but whenever I start editing video the drive will disconnect and I'll have to wait for it to reconnect.

I have had to switch over to the USB 2.0 port to get anything done. Might as well not even have the 3.0 port really.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY IT!

Pros: Umm, none!

Cons: Card installs, comes up on my computer but won't read anything USB 3.0 or USB 2.0...what's the point of the card if it won't read. I've installed it correctly, updated the drivers from the manufacturer's site twice and it's still not reading anything. WASTE OF MONEY!

Other Thoughts: don't buy it

5 out of 5 eggsName Brand Technology

Pros: Works great (I went online to download the latest driver), it allows me to run 4 USB-2 at full speed using the ports on my LapTop Cooler.

Cons: No USB-3 cable, no power cable.

Other Thoughts: If you have a computer made after 2009 it probably has a Gen-2 Ecpress Card controller and is capable of 5 Gigabits per second (625 Magabytes per second) my old Lap-Top is Gen-1 Express Card controller (good for 2.5 Gigabits per second (312 MegaBytes per second), SD cards are limited to the same speed by design and USB-3 Flash Drives are at 200 MB. p.s. right now.

4 out of 5 eggsMac OS X.7.2 Lion Works w/tweaks

Pros: Slim form factor sits flush with mbp

Cons: No built in support on mac, so some tweaks and experimenting is required.

Other Thoughts: This is on a MacBook Pro 17-inch, 2.3GHz i7, unibody (feb 2011) running OS X Lion (10.7.2). The card works well but first you'll need to google "Modbin patched LaCie ktext" to install a patched version of the LaCie USB 3.0 driver.

2 out of 5 eggsExternal HDD Problems

Pros: Fits flush with the case.

Cons: Runs hot. USB 3.0 thumb drives are not very much faster than USB 2.0 ports on the same machine. USB 3.0 external hard drive (Hitachi Touro Mobile Pro) is not recognized consistently. I tried updating to the latest drivers (2.1.27.0) for Renesas/NEC UDP720700A with some luck, but inconsistent. The drive was recognized briefly, but after putting some data on it and removing it, I found that later attachment showed bad directories.

Plugging the external drive into a USB 2.0 port works flawlessly.

Other Thoughts: I've contacted Syba support and hope that there is a newer driver.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for purchasing our Syba products. The driver you use is the wrong one. The correct one can be downloaded at this link: http://www.sybausa.com/resource/SD-EXP20070/uPD720200.zip. 4 out of 5 eggsWorks with Mac OSX in a MacBookPro 2,1

Pros: Works with OSX(with some work) on MacBookPro 2,1. Fits pefectly flush(it's super small)

Cons: It gets REALLY Hot!(maybe because it is so small)

Other Thoughts: I only use it for osx so it wasn't a huge con for me ...yet, but I did try it w/ windows 7 once and did not work(might need the firmware update for NEC). Not bootable on MacBookPro 2,1 but not a deal breaker for me.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but runs crazy hot

Pros: It works as a USB 3.0 host, it's flush mounted, and it has a black faceplace (so it blends in GREAT with my ThinkPad).

It also has a power input to connect to another USB port (see cons).

Cons: It runs crazy hot, even when there is no USB device plugged in. And, even though it comes with a power input, it doesn't include the needed cable.

Other Thoughts: I gave this one away and bought a SilverStone EC02, which has the same controller and same black faceplace, but doesn't run nearly as hot.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsPractical, but with setup issues

Pros: This turns your expresscard slot into a USB 3.0 slot - very useful on a slightly older machine (like, 1 year or so). So, one would expect a dramatic increase in speed. I mean, USB 3.0 is supposed to be up to 10x as fast as USB 2.0, so I was hopeful. With my (very) old USB 2.0 drive I was getting transfer rates on the order of 5 mbps. With the new USB 3.0 adapter and USB 3.0 drive, I was getting between 10-18 mbps (very odd the fluctuations in speed on the same set of files). Maybe not 10x as fast, but 2-3x as fast. With large files, that jump in speed is great, even if not as much as advertised for the USB 3.0 platform.

And, it is a flush mount, which is great, not having a large adapter hanging off the side of the laptop.

Cons: Odd setup, as the accompanying disk includes support for Windows 98 ME (really?), Windows 2000, and Windows Vista. And no support on the Syba website. With a bit of digging, I found the Windows 7 driver on the accompanying disk, though it took some trial and error (searching sub folder after sub folder looking for executables).

More annoying, whenever I pull the USB drive out, it brings the adapter with it. Even if you hold the adapter in place with your finger, half the time it still comes out. So it is flush mounted, but maybe a little too flush. I can learn to live with this though, for the convenience of the jump in speed.

Also, this thing runs really hot. Really hot. So maybe pulling it out every now and again with a USB drive might not be a bad thing.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I would recommend it, since it turns the otherwise limited functionality of the Expresscard slot into a USB 3.0 slot. Great for laptops that don't have USB 3.0 built in.
