2 out of 5 eggsNot Ready for Prime Time

Pros: FAST

Cons: Kills Express Card slots if external wall wart not used.

Other Thoughts: As always, Newegg RMA process is quick and efficient. The Aluratek 2-Port USB 3.0 Express Card is fast but not well designed or documented.

I plugged it into my Fujitsu N6460 Express Card slot and tried it without the wall wart. It appeared to be working and I was able to backup 183GB in 48 minutes. When I tried it again a few days later, the Express Card power was dead. The Aluratek card gets very hot and, I believe, contributed to the failure of my Express Card slot. The card and port work with the wall wart but that adds extra cables and components.

The /34 card design is very sensitive to movement when plugged into a /54 slot. There's nothing to hold it in place so the slightest movement causes the contacts to lose connection and the job to abort.

4 out of 5 eggsKinda loose

Pros: It works as it's supposed to, have a 2TB external drive hooked up to it over USB 3.0 and transfers are very fast.
Also, when plugging in a USB 2.0 device, the data transfer is a little bit faster than average. I have a particular flash drive that usually transfers data at 24-28MB/s, when plugged into this is averaged 30-33MB/s.

Cons: The need for a power cord is a drag. The card can take mostly anything you plug into it with enough power (it charges my iPhone) but for external hard drives, even the small ones, it needs to be plugged in.
The card does not stay in place well. When you unplug a device you have to hold the card in place with one hand or you'll yank it out. No damage occurs if you do happen to pull it out, but still bothersome.
Lastly, devices are a little hard to plug in or remove. This may clear up once I've had it longer, but right now it's a small pain.

Other Thoughts: Data transfer lags on folders compared to individual files. This may be more of a problem with USB 3.0 than the actual card, but just fyi for everyone.
